The Weltmeister (translation: World Champion) EX5-Z was the best-selling A-class electric SUV in China last year, not bad from a nearly new car company. It offers solid design, and an attractive range and price, plus a couple of quirky features - voice activated boot anyone? The fact that Weltmeister has made this much progress in a few short years begs the question: have legacy car companies already lost the EV battle?

I know Fully Charged has commented on its coverage of China before, but the fact you're promoting vehicles from state-owned firms (or at least with batteries from state-owned firms), the same state that has millions of Uighur Muslims in concentration camps, is pretty disgusting. Never mind the additional argument that it will harm UK manufacturing and cost us 200k+ jobs if domestic firms lose sales to the Chinese in the UK. We actively don't want their vehicles here.

Legacy automakers??? If you do not count Geely/Volvo (Polestar) in your definition? Then it just means any maker of ICEVs (that are not, making enough BEVs on BEV only platforms), I guess? But PSA and Hyundai, seem to make some pretty good BEVs on flexible platforms, don't they? So pls stop using "dog whistle" politics that every non-BEV only automaker is Evil and has to be denounced for it, as if we were back in the French Revolution. BTW, love the EV reviews, but the standard SM "red meat" political commentary for the SM BEV only zealots... It's a sad distraction, from this insightful review. Keep up the good work....

For future episodes: - how's the interior build quality and materials? - their infotainment UI looks very funky, could have shown a bit of it - a few seconds to show the interior of the trunk and mention if the seats recline - drive modes: how's the one pedal driving / regen settings - could note they have another model EX6 which is a little bigger - you have the XPeng G3, how does that one compare ?

How about making it mandatory to have the speedo in the eye line of the driver? My Mini drives me mental when the fuel tank is near empty, as the digital speedo right in front of me keeps reverting to the warning light, and the main speedo is in the middle... Or making it mandatory for the screen on mobile phones to lock upon connection to the car? One moron this morning who sat in the middle of a junction waiting to turn right, texting long after the lights had changed and unaware that he was blocking the junction. Then shouted at me for beeping the horn.

Can we have accurate facts please? This was nowhere near the best selling EV in China in 2019, and is not even the best selling compact SUV, unless you want to define that category in a deliberately distorted way. The 2019 best seller title went to the BAIC EU-series, selling 110,000 units. (in 2020 it's the Tesla Model 3 with around 60,000 units to end of July). In 2019 this Weltmeister EX5 sold no more than 15,000 or 16,000 units (at most) . In 2020 it has averaged around 1300 per month and gradually improving. In 2019 the MG ZS EV sold - 17,179 units. The MG ZS is very slightly shorter - but is still a compact SUV with greater sales than this one. How on earth are you guys defining A-class SUV? 2020 might be the year when the Weltmeister EX5 overtakes the MG ZS in China sales (though not in global sales)... but we won't know till the end of the year.

There appear to be a lot of ICE fanboys lurking at the moment, probably slagging off anything from China as they are worried that their beloved Legacy manufacturers won't be able to keep up in a few years. It is true that China has a little way to go to find their own style and to improve safety, but come on...look how far they have come in just a few years. Is this coming to Europe or US markets or are we spending time dreaming of things that we will never see or hope to drive more competition in the ev market is the key to driveing prices down and choices up ???????!!!!!!!!

There's a reason they have built all that stuff so fast. Yes, things move faster i China but they also cut a lot of corners. How is safety with these cars ? Reliability ? Parts availability ? Second hand value ? Almost all of the Chinese cars that I have ridden in had a long way to go before reaching anywhere close to a japanese or european car in comfort and sophistication. The sound when you close the door for example, how much road noise is getting in to the cabin, the feel of pushing a button, interface design, all these small details that makes a car a compelling package.

Very sympathetic presenter and enjoyable speaking, would like to see more from you. But ... as mentioned in other comments, not really a good car review. Have a look at other scripts to improve - tell the information people wants and show the topic you are talking about in frame.
@logicalChimp

True - but FC is less about 'proper' car reviews (especially now Johnny is gone) and more about looking to the future... this was an episode of 'look what can be done in a couple of years - legacy auto, why you so slow?', etc (and so expensive :p). Given the car is only available in China (for now) - and there are likely a lot of 'proper' Chinese reviews of the car - there's not really a need for FC to do a detailed review of it, because it likely won't be coming to the west (at least in current guise / current model, etc).
@pioneer7777777
@pioneer7777777 3 жыл бұрын
@@logicalChimp Agreed. I think it's a bit boring if it's just like any other car review. Fully charged does things differently. Also, this car is not for purchase in the main markets watched by Fully charged (Europe, US, etc) so doing a full review to inform buyers is not exactly what this is about. More of just a glimpse into the Chinese EV world.

True, but a lot of us like to see the interior in these cars and this review was severely lacking in it. What do the buttons do, how is the infotainment interface etc etc. No point just looking at his face then some drone shots of the countryside. Was disappointing.

I think these Chinese evs will be like the Japanese cars were in the 70’s. Legacy automakers can rest on their branding where as these companies have to build a reputation from scratch. I’m sure this will lead to better engineering choices, less cost cutting and less consumer hostility.

Thanks for sharing details of this EV. At the moment, it appears the price point is its best feature! 5:38 to 6:13 The rear door handle behind the driver door seems sticky (sticky outie!). 6:21 For eagle-eyed viewers, you can see the rear door handle is still sticking out when Elliot is merrily driving along! I would like to say that "This has sold a lot of cars over the past couple of years" is a meaningless statement. Toofless Tesla: This EV is considered "best selling"? Oh yeah, well how many units have been sold? Elliot: A lot. Toofless Tesla: Right, you're in !

I loved this video and liked it and you'll just have to forgive me for this: "begging the question" does not mean what some think it means. It's a really useful phrase that's hard to say any other way and we should try to protect it for that reason. e.g. "Why is that film popular?" "It's popular because a hell of a lot of people like it." Here the answer is adding no information - it's really borrowing (begging) information from the question. It's a kind of circular argument. If a politician answers you this way it's incredibly sneaky and you need a way to point out that they are cheating and not really answering your question and that's when you need this phrase: " but Prime Minister your answer begs the question, could you please answer it instead?"

Words and phrases tend to mean what people think they mean. That's what "meaning" means. I understand that there's some heritage of "begging the question" meaning what you say. However, the phrase makes such obtuse use of the word "beg", that of course people will think the phrase means "begs for the question X to be asked". It's not at all hard to say the original sense of "that begs the question", just "that's circular reasoning". Maybe you could direct your attention to "imply" vs "infer" -- that one really bugs me :-).
@timmurphy5541
@timmurphy5541 3 жыл бұрын
@@Graham_Wideman I learned about "begs the question" after misusing it a lot myself. I can think of lots of good alternatives like "that raises the question" etc. I think the original meaning is worth trying to defend (hopelessly of course) because when you can name a sneaky behaviour you get some power over it.

Can't fully share your opinion about existing carmakers: From what I researched, this car was sold 15.000x in 2019. The VW e-Golf had approximately double the volume in that year. VW is projecting sales of 1.5 Mio. EVs in 2025 (including China). And have a look at the lineup of new EVs - does this look like these manufacturers are neglecting EVs (in 2020)?
