My four days in Belfast and Derry will never leave me and I will definitely be going back soon I am 60, remember the Troubles very clearly and suffered prejudice growing up as an Irish kid in South London…. The way the lovely, wonderful and friendly people in Northern Ireland impacted on me will never leave me, I am not to ashamed to say it makes me cry from time to time, so many innocent lives lost in both communities ❤❤❤❤❤❤ The people of Northern Ireland are so wonderful and I fervently pray that we NEVER return to the dark days of the Troubles

Thank You for this Wendall I'm from Boston here in the states & I performed in Derry at Sandino's in 2009 as part of an Irish Hip Hop tour. I saw the mall/shopping center but not much else because it's not a place where you just wander around on your own especially when you're not from there. The night of the show outside Sandino's someone tried to size me up to see what I was about but thankfully nothing happened. Derry is a beautiful city with warm & welcoming people that I got on with effortlessly. My only partial return to Derry was by way of a call-in interview I did on Drive 105 back in 2018. Yet someday soon I will return hopefully for a gig or something of that nature yet being on that Irish Hip Hop tour where we played Belfast & Dublin as well was one of the first of it's kind & pioneering whereas now there's a lot more folks rappin including KNEECAP who are WORLDWIDE with what they're doing. Also my gran emigrated here to Boston from Co. Fermanagh Eniskilen. So the north in some small way is in my lineage.

Wendall, just to let you know the mayor of Derry was parachuted in in quite an underhanded manner. It was all done in a very dishonest way and many Derry people and people of Ireland north and south were not happy at all about this. It felt like a manufacturing of a 'diverse' mayor was planned, without the people being given say in the matter. This is why there has been some negativity towards her, and understandably so. This is a throwback to the divide and rule tactics of the British Establishment in Northern Ireland for many years.

Hi Wendall, great video as always, really enjoying the longer format recently! Got some Irish heritage but never really learned about Irish history, great to see such an interesting topic presented so well from all sides. Off-topic - The "fake house" at 36:30 is likely not an abandoned building, but a shell which is hiding essential infrastructure - utilities, underground trains, sewage, etc. Companies which provide infrastructure in towns & cities will buy small portions of land or existing houses, then build a fake shell to hide something like vents for underground trains or a power substation. It helps to deter break-ins, prevent suspicion, fit in with the area's architecture and building regulations/requirements, etc.

You missed literally half of the city. Derry is split into the city side and the waterside, separated by the river Foyle. Bloody Sunday is still a day celebrated by unionists in Northern Ireland. There's even a slogan of 'NO APOLOGY' and Parachute Regiment memorial days and marches. There was massive support in recent years for the soldiers by unionists, and to add insult to injuries of the victims and their families, Parachute Regiment flags went up all over Northern Ireland. Some unionists even started a campaign to target the victims' families as they walked a little stretch of road to Derry Courthouse for a justice hearing. Police were called and statements were made that they didn’t have permission. Reminiscent of the rights snatched away from their loved ones that day in Derry. Certainly the attempt to hound. Sad, but type it into Google. Better yet, type it X, find the articles and posts of the time, read the comment sections.

Well done, Wendall. You can see from some of the posts thus far that there is still division within the communities here in their views and attitudes to what our history is. From my experience I believe that we need to teach history, not from the old aspects of armies, battles, triumphalism, but from the histories of our own families. Many people are ignorant of their true family history. Many are unaware of the complexities of their ancestry. We're not necessarily all Protestant or Catholic. We can have shared heritage along the way!

Even in 1912 it was summoned by Bonar Law, the Conservative Leader, when he was supporting unionist opposition to the Third Home Rule bill. Speaking directly to unionists, he said “You are a besieged city. The timid have left you; your Lundys have betrayed you; but you have closed your gates.” The short-term implications of the failure by the Jacobites to subdue Londonderry included a major psychological boost being given to the Williamite forces in Ireland; at Enniskillen there had been solid resistance to James, which would have been strengthened had Lundy not ordered garrisons removed in Sligo and Cavan. However the relief of the city came at the same time as the Williamite victory at Newtownbutler, which was another grievous blow to James II.

Mate around 500 live in the fountain most of the protestant community live in the waterside, across the peace bridge, it's a part of the city over looked but it's very safe and it has mixed nieghbourhoods. All our private housing in NI would be mixed and anyone could live in those areas.

Lots of people born outside their place of birth end up in leadership. Boris Johnson is American. The one time Australian PM Julia Gillard was from Barry Wales. Even the Battenburg Royal family are German and Greek.
