Took the flight from Chicago to Beijing. Truly exciting to see the northern Canadian islands, the North Pole, all of Siberia. Then Alaska would be an independant culturaly russian country. There where independence movements in the colony and the russian Empire sold alaska because of it. Alaska wasn't worth it, back then the Gold and oil reserves where not known of. They wouldn't enrole the army to a rebellious colony which didn't even have ports which don't freeze over in the winter. If they would have tried to keep alaska under their reign, alyeska would have revolted in the winter and the russians could have never reinforced or enrolled the army until alyeska would have been possible to declare itself independant.

This video also unintentionally explains why Russia is such an important part of China's Belt and Road Initiative. Road and rail infrastructure across Siberia and European Russia is crucial to promoting land trade between Europe and East Asia.
@jyashin
@jyashin 4 жыл бұрын
Bit of a late reply. While Russia is an important partner for China's BRI, most of the railways and other connectivity infrastructure don't take place in Russia itself, but in the former Soviet Republics. China doesn't trust Russia, as Russian authorities are notorious for attacking and closing Chinese businesses. That's why the routes mostly go through Kazakhstan. China even built railways in Turkey and Syria just to avoid Russia as much as possible. However, Russia's influence over the former Soviet republics is immense, and Putin's approval is required to actually get those countries on board. Thus, while most of the projects don't take place in Russia, the Kremlin is unfortunately a poison China has to risk.
@jyashin
@jyashin 4 жыл бұрын
@@Dragones15 Russia had closed Chinese businesses in Moscow before. That said, I'm very skeptical of the whole "China doesn't care about its citizens" narrative our gongzhi (it's a negative term) propagate. When in Russia, follow Russian laws, after all. The US is also a poison pill. At the end of the day we can only count on ourselves. This is true of all countries, including both Russia and China.

Actually, flat Earthers believe in a map of Earth that corroborates everyone else's understanding of the north pole, and allows for polar flights in the Arctic. It is the map of the Antarctic that flat Earthers deny. And they bring up the fact that there are very few flights over Antarctica. But the truth is that the three population centers of the Southern Hemisphere (Chile/Argentina, Sydney Australia, and South Africa) all form a triangle around Antarctica, such that there is no need to fly over Antarctica on such flights. The great circles pass through the oceans alone. There is a Qantas flight between Sydney and Santiago, that would be impossible if the flat Earth conspiracy theorists were correct.

This video is factually incorrect. It is true that the SU in early 50s was a tightly closed and hostile country. But the principal reason why you had to take the 36-hour-long Southern route to Tokyo back then was aircraft having so short operation ranges. Even if SU were an open country at that time, flying this route would require nearly as many stops, say, LON-MOW-SVX-OVB-HTA-KHV-TYO. But this would be far less feasible commercially because the Southern route served several densely populated (even if poor) Asian countries with strong commercial ties to Europe, so these destinations might be also served and provided profit to the airlines. Then the video ignores the fact that SU slowly opened during 60s and 70s. The "Trans-Siberian route" for flights LON-MOW-TYO and PAR-MOW-TYO became operational by 1970, provided that Aeroflot, JAL, and BOAC/AF all had commercial rights for the whole route. During the following decade other destinations in Europe, such as CPH, FRA and ROM, were added. Why did airlines use Anchorage at the same time? Because Soviet airports didn't have the necessary equipment to accommodate widebodies such as B747. Flights through Soviet airspace were therefore limited to narrow-body jets till late 80s. Thus, the claim this video makes, that the "Trans-Siberian route" only opened after SU collapsed, is factually incorrect.

Yes, and the real reason they didn't fly over the USSR to Tokyo starting from 1983 was because the _Japanese_ insisted they take the long way around; the at-the-time still state-owned Japan Airlines demanded it, because they wanted to be among the first airlines to fly directly over the USSR between Europe and Asia, and they didn't see Helsinki or Finland as an important enough destination to warrant such a flight. They got their wish a few years later when direct service between Tokyo and Paris opened operated by both JAL and Air France.
