I love Reggie Bush because he came into the NFL with all of the hype in the world and it never really materialized but rather than let the ego turn him into a bust he put his head down and turned out a pretty solid workmanlike career with a few amazing highlights here and there. Most of these guys will shrink and become complete failures or problems....he didn't. Definitely in the top 5 college players of all time for me...up there with Barry for sure.

he was elite as a runner and receiver, with insane speed (4.33 40 yard dash) for a RB, that's part of why he went so high in the draft. and that was still back when RB was a premium position for nfl teams. people were projecting him to be a 1000 yard rusher and 1000 yard receiver. he was never a superstar in the NFL but he still had some great moments. as far as college goes he's one of the most electric players ever

Reggie is the reason I’m a USC fan he played in the nfl from 2006-2016 for 5 different teams and won the superbowl with the New Orleans Saints. He’s not a hall of famer but he had a solid career even though he only had 2 seasons where he rushed for 1,000+ yards. He’s in the college football hall of fame

That play at 5:44 is known as the "Bush Push." Context from Wikipedia below: On the last play of the game for second and goal, sometimes called the "Bush Push" and named one of the greatest college football plays ever, Carroll signaled to Leinart to spike the ball and stop the game. As it would turn out, the gesture was merely a decoy. Carroll had really told Leinart to go for the touchdown and not to tie the game and cause overtime. Leinart, opting to keep the ball on the advice of Bush, tried to sneak into the end zone. When he was stopped by a large group of Irish players, Bush pushed him into the end zone for the winning score. After an excessive celebration penalty, a missed extra point, and a final, unsuccessful last-ditch attempt at a kickoff return for touchdown by Notre Dame with only 3 seconds left, the game ended with the Trojans winning 34-31.

Infamous play. Was illegal at the time to push another player but now it’s legal. USC was down by 3 and it was a do-or-die play. There were only 3 seconds left in the game when they scored that touchdown. As a notre dame fan growing up as a kid, that play haunted me lol

This is awesome fellas! I played against Reggie in High school for 2 seasons (5 tackles on him!) and he is still the undisputed GOAT in San Diego High school history which is crazy considering the stars that have come out of here. Even when his team would beat us, you couldn't hang your head for too long because you knew you had just played against greatness.

Reggie was definitely in the 2006 Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl is played on or after New Years Day and that year was the National Championship Game for the 2005-2006 season. The Heisman Trophy is a regular season award and is awarded in December so he was the current season's winner in that game. That top of that '06 draft was actually quite fascinating. The Texans had the top pick and, for months, Bush was considered the likely pick. There as no consensus number 1 QB and Bush was such an athletic weapon that he could be used at RB, WR, and return man. However, in the days leading up to the draft, the Texans shifted focus to a defensive end out of NC State named Mario Williams. Williams was considered the best edge rusher heading into the draft and the Texans decided that they needed an answer to Peyton Manning who they would see twice a year with the Colts in their division. It made a bit of sense but was still quite surprising to many at the time. That all being said, both had solid careers but ones that were lackluster compared to the hype. Williams sputtered in his career mixing some good years with some off years (some due to injury) but he eventually played 11 years in total, made 4 Pro Bowls, and contributed to some up-and-coming Bills teams in the early 10's. Bush played for the same 11 years and contributed to the Saints Super Bowl win in 2009-10, albeit in a limited capacity due to injury; something that also contributed to the sputters in his career. 5:44 - This was a famous play because it was a QB sneak late in a rivalry game against Notre Dame on the road with USC on a 27-game win streak heading into the game. This was a play that came to be known as the "Bush Push" because Reggie pushes the QB Matt Leinart into the end zone, which you weren't allowed to do back then, but nobody called it.

Bush vs Young game was such a hype moment in College Football. Bush was never adapted into a "between the tackles" RB in the NFL and especially working in a pass first offence with the Saints, still helped that he had great hands and footwork, combined with speed.

I knew you would be impressed by Reggie bush. Reggie runs past other guys with elite speed with ease. He’s not particularly big, but no one could run stride for stride with him in college. He had a decent NFL career with the few amazing highlights. But he did not have a Hall of Fame type career. He has become quite a well-known pundit on one of the big NFL networks. He’s remembered for his college career more than his NFL career. I went to UCLA and USC is our crosstown rival. Reggie just killed us during his time at SC. Great video guys. The play where you weren’t sure what happened is a hugely famous play called the “Bush Push.” That was a game between rivals USC and Notre Dame that had national championship implications. Mario Williams, an edge rusher from NC State, was drafted 1st that year by the Texans. Both he an Bush went on to play 10 years in the league with decent stats and personal accolades, but not a lot of team success. Both ended up posting respectable, but sub-100, career AV scores (btw, if you're not familiar, these AV scores come from the Pro Football Reference site, which is an invaluable resource for NFL stats and history).

Mario Williams ended up going 1st that year. Throughout the lead up to the draft though, it was thought that Reggie would be going 1st to the Texans. It was almost a foregone conclusion by all the draft experts that it would be Reggie. Texan stunned everyone when, i believe the day before the draft, they announced that they were going to select Mario Williams with the 1st pick. Reggie was actually in the 2006 National Championship game you covered, he messed up early in the game by fumbling unnecessarily. Ironically Vince Young the QB for Texas was drafted the next pick after Reggie at 3rd overall.

USC, with 8, has the most Heisman Award winners. The first was Mike Garrett in 1965, followed by O.J. Simpson in 1968. 3 were QBs the others were RBs. They won 3 in 4 years (2002, 04 & 05). However, if you look at the list of winners you see that the 2005 winner is not listed. Bush's stripped of his award when it was discovered that he (actually his parents) were illegally "compensated" during his days at USC. The school was "heavily" punished, which why it took so long to get their next winner (#8) in Caleb Williams in 2022. When Bush played, the home stadium (L.A. Coliseum) would play a the noise of a jet engine revving in anticipation of Bush getting the ball and blasting off.

Always was on the field as a receiving back on pass plays. Helped the team he was drafted to win the superbowl in his fourth season. Played 10 season in the league, was a first team all pro punt returner one season and had 58 career touchdowns which is tied for 195th all time. Not amazing career, but bust wouldn’t be my assessment of it.

I don't think it can be overstated how hyped up Reggie Bush was after coming out of college - more than anyone else I can remember in my lifetime. The fact that he wasn't even drafted first by the Texans was a huge shock. The fact that the Texans turned out to be right, maybe even moreso. Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, was certain that it would be remembered as one of the all-time great blunders. But Mario Williams became an excellent defensive end, and while Bush went on to have a solid career, he didn't even come close to the insane expectations people had for him. But when you look at his college highlights, can we really blame people for expecting so much of him?

When he got to the NFL he couldn't just outrun everyone, flip the field(think a counter play but unscripted) or expect so much room to work with to make guys miss. It took him quite a few years to change his style up and become a solid NFL player. Accepting the fact he can't try and turn every play into a touchdown. As funny as it may sound he was actually better after 4-5 years and losing a step. Still never was worth a first round pick let alone #2 overall but was a decent back. Very similar to derrick Henry actually, his career was looking like a giant bust till a former titans running back told him he was going to lose his job unless he stopped trying to play hero ball and just hit the hole and gain what's there.

Oregon Ducks fan here. Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart are USC legends. Them and that Pete Carroll (now head coach of the Seattle Seahawks) led team are considered one of the best college football dynasties. That’s why it was such a big deal when Vince Young and Texas beat them in the National Championship.

If I remember correctly, I believe Mario Williams a defensive lineman, went first that year back then it wasn’t uncommon for running backs to be high picks that trend only started probably within the last 10 years

Reggie was incredible - as a runner and a receiver. He had some crazy stats in college for “all purpose yards” (kick return, punt return, rushing & receiving yards) including a 500 yard performance with all purpose yards. He bounced around in the NFL a little bit but did bulk up to adjust to The NFL. Was always best though just as a pure runner. Since you guys are starting to do more college stuff - I still strongly recommend Charles Woodson! (College Heisman & NFL MVP) ☮️❤

Bush was in that game, but the dates fall different, the bowl game was in January so the awards go for the year before, the first pick was Mario Williams to the Texans, who ended up being a very good edge rusher. Bush struggled to be on the field for every play in the NFL with him being thinner, he became a very good 3rd down back. He struggled with injuries, and struggled with him being slighter and not sooo much faster then everyone. It actually ended up being the better pick in the long run. Sorry Texans fan here. Favorite moment was him losing to Texas in Rose Bowl.

Reggie was a human cheat code. He had a very good career, could have been a Hall of Famer but injuries slowed him down. A D Lineman by the name of Mario Williams was the 2st over all pick the year Bush was drafted...Reggie had the better of the 2 careers by a long shot... and yes...Reggie was in that USC v Texas game with Vince Young.

You've seen his teams (USC/Seahawks), you've watched his players. Pete Carroll is an exceptional coach. I'll never forgive him for turning me into a Jets fan, nor will I forgive the Jets for firing him after only one season. FOR RICH KOTITE!!!

People saying he didn't live up to the hype (in the NFL) may not realize he was under the Sean Payton offense and he always utilized everyone to keep defenses on their toes, but when it was Reggie's turn... he lived up to it. He didn't get the carries in the first place, because he shared time with Duece McCalister and Pierre Thomas who were great RBs for their jobs. However, if you watch his run, especially in 09 where he's the one bringing the bat out in the playoffs, it's pretty clear he was the man. I do believe if he had gone to another team that he may not have gotten the right usage. Not stung he wouldn't have been a thousand-yard rusher but he may have gotten beaten up too early. There weren't too many "slimmer" backs at the time being used correctly. Sean Payton was able to use him like he was used at USC because of his offensive genius. Other teams that were in the market for him did not have that luxury, to be honest.

Reggie Bush had a decent NFL career in perspective of just how how it is to play and stay in the NFL. But compared to his legendary status in college, and his draft spot, his NFL career didn’t quit live up to it, injuries played a big role. Still none the less carved out a nice career.

As a pro, he had two 1,000 yard seasons and a Super Bowl ring. His first coach Sean Peyton killed him with his usage.

His NFL career was not that of an all time great RB, but I would say he was an all time great dual threat weapon. He wasn't someone who would rush for 1400+ yards in a season, but he could get that same production through rushing & receiving combined with like 600-700 yards of each. Most his career was spent splitting time with other RBs on the Saints but once they traded him to the Dolphins he proved he did have the capability to be a good solo RB. Finally achieving his first 1000 yard rushing season. His final season as a full time starter really showed the potential of what he could've been if given the opportunities earlier in his career, he finished the season with his most scrimmage yards ever at 1500 (1000 rushing yards & 500 receiving yards.)

Reggie is one of the greatest college players I have ever seen. It was appointment TV when they played. He was a good pro. He may have made a pro bowl or two, but he was nothing compared to his college days. People will beat him down because he could not reach these heights in the NFL, but yeah, he had a solid 10 year career

Another thing to consider is just how stacked with talent these SC teams were. All of his Oline would have played in the league. That helps you look good. If you notice, a lot of the time he doesn't have to cut until he already has a 5 yard gain, or if he does half of the D Line is already on the ground. Those teams were elite.
