Wes needs to be more patient when finishing the snatch pull, looses momentum of bar when throwing himself back too quickly instead of being more patient and finishing off later before heading under the bar

Thug Aim He actually needs to stay more patient when STARTING the snatch pull. You’re seeing and describing the effect of a fundamental error that is happening as he breaks the bar from the floor in the initial lift. Note... bar feel, mood and timing tend to get disrupted when we start our tapering process. He didn’t miss at 173 in the last 4 weeks of training. He’s in good shape... trust me.

I'm not questioning his shape, he's in great shape and good for 180-185 snatch. Maybe even 190 in a couple years. The only thing I can tell (if anything) from the angle of the missed snatch is that he started off pulling the bar back into his body, moving center of gravity back instead of preserving the hang from starting position. His starting position seems fine to me, tight and solid but maybe a bit too low for him to break off the floor with good hang over the bar. If that is the case then yes, it will carry over to the power position and final pull, making it inefficient. But this is being very very finicky about very few missed attempts. Don't get me wrong, you're a phenomenal coach and the progress of Wes has been good, but he's very explosive, making it easier to pull himself out of proper positioning.

Thanks for clarifying. I prefer to discuss technique in longer format mediums because there is often a lot to unpack. When it comes to technique, there isn't an athlete on our team that I consider to be achieving at their potential. In other words, every athlete on the team, as it relates to their movement is still very much a work in progress. That being said, at the relative intensities that the majority of our group trains (intensity being weight on the bar relative to body weight); refinements in positions take time and can have a significant effect on tension, timing, tempo and consistency. The cues and strategies to get a beginner or intermediate lifter to make technical progress versus an athlete that lifts 1.5x body weight in the Snatch and 2x body weight in the C&J are often not as scaleable as people may think. Also, every lift you observe represents a small sample of the athletes technical proficiency juxtaposed against whatever demands are being placed on the athlete as a result of their training. Technical expressions change based on where we are in the training block as stiffness, fatigue and changes in body weight create nuances in movement. To tie all that back to this particular video, Wes is only a few weeks out from the Pan Am Championships so our tapering process is starting to effect him. Specifically, when we reduce the volume of squats, his mobility tends to improve and so he inadvertently sinks his hips lower in the start position of the snatch to find tension. When he starts the lift from this position, the trajectory of the bar moves away from his body. He works hard to make the adjustment at the knee but ultimately the alteration to the bar path cannot be overcome as the bar rises into the power position. This causes him to shift his weight forward on the foot to move his center of mass over the bar. From this position improper sequence of extension is inevitable and so in an effort to reclaim tension on the bar, he shoots behind it. This causes the bar to either be missed forward if insufficient energy is applied or loop behind if Wes puts some mustard on it. One final thought.... while I appreciate compliments in your response, you can call me a phenomenal coach after we have brought home international medals across multiple competitions for multiple athletes. Until then I remain a humble soldier in the War On Mediocrity!
