These are from my local town. I remember reading about them as a child. I think the common theory (or the one we choose to believe) is they were mistaken to be Arsenal and the mistake was only realised after they won the trophy

I love this story, though I hate there football team, but as romantic as the West Auckland is, to call it a World Title is a bit of a stretch, at best I'd call it a European Championship, and even then, only 4 countries sent teams with the rest of Europe not playing in it. Its also not the first Competition deemed to a World or International Championship Between 1876 and 1904 There was a Football World Championship played between the Champions and/or Cup Winners of England and Scotland. There was also 4 'International' Tournaments that predated The Thomas Lipton Trophy Challenge International du Nord (1898-1914) played between French and Belgian teams originally, then expanded to teams from Switzerland, The Netherlands and England, interestingly, Eastbourne F.C. won this competition in 1909, the same year of West Aucklands triumph, with Reigate Priory and Cambridge City winning it at some point. Then there was Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz (1900-1907) was played for by teams from Holland, Belgium and Switzerland and later England, the competition would be dubbed Club Championship of the Continent by the press at the time Then there was the Coupe Jean Dupuich (1908-1925) which was a successor to the Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz, Interestingly, West Aucklands local rivals won this competition in 1909 and 1910 And lastly there was the Torneo Internazionale Stampa in 1908 Sportiva. While I think the West Auckland story is brilliant and theres a great movie about it called A Captains Tale, it is on youtube
