West Kennet Long Barrow - Neolithic burial tomb

Join me, as I explore this incredible Neolithic tomb in Wiltshire in the UK.
Built circa 3650 BC, this 30ft long burial site housed the sacred remains of at least 46 Neolithic people including men, women and the skulls of children and provided a wealth of valuable information to archaeologists.
The site remains sacred to many and marks the oldest Neolithic monument upon the ancient Avebury landscape.

In the Netherlands these tombs are called "hunebed" and 52 of them have been preserved. It's great that these buildings can be found throughout Europe, up to Malta. by the way, nice walk like always. 👍👍👍

Sat in the car on the road below WKLB waiting for the torrential rain to ease...got fed up waiting so drove on and never got to see it. Hopefully I'll get back sometime...thanks for the tour of this special & magical place...we braved the rain that day for a few quick pics of Silbury! 😀

Seems the rain is particularly relentless in this spot as I had to stop and start filming whilst there. Nothing like a bit of Wiltshire horizontal rain! Hope you make the trip back, definitely worth it.

About 25 years ago Julian Cope did a tv series called The Modern Antiquarian (I think for BBC2) and gave the most fascinating and vivid description of what Silbury Hill might have looked like in its prime, this huge manmade structure, gleaming white from the chalk stone it was built from isurrounded by a lush, verdant environment. It must have looked otherworldly. In fact, I think it still does. When I first saw Silbury Hill, without knowing anything about it, it felt alien to the environment, a dark, brooding shadow was cast over it where the rest of the countryside was lit brightly in the summer sun. it certainly has presence!

Hi, In the early 90s my late friend a cartographer/ land surveyor for the OS and I thought maybe Silbury was an elevated trig point used to measure and position/build ritual burial mounds etc onto the landscape, I was also a keen Astrophotographer, so it became phesable to us that maybe burial mounds could represent star locations in the Northern hemisphere, Silbury being the position of the star Deneb, part of Cygnus the Swan, It would seem the hill was deliberately built so as to elevate people and allow accurate location and construction of sites in low lying areas, a good example is a gap we found in the Wandsdyke where an alignment to Adams grave can be seen. Precession of the earth etc over thousands of years were part of the calculations. It certainly caught the imagination of the local press at the time.. I love this area, WK long barrow and Avebury are powerful energy centres, I to place my hands on the stones, it just feels a natural thing to do, wishing you well... This is so fascinating! I feel like I've read recently that there are similar theories surrounding the alignment of the stones at Stonehenge too - seems like they're looking more at the moon and stars rather than the sun. Thanks for sharing and for watching!

I only discovered this Barrow about twenty years ago. I'm pleased it is still used for rituals (I've done a few there myself, including one after dark) though not everyone is careful with their candles and have left scorch marks and wax dripped on the stones aet times. You might also like my local Barrow at Wayland's Smithy, some 25 miles away. It's smaller but older than this one and is close to the chalk horse figure at Uffington.

I read that Silbury Hill is the hub of a circle of reference points in the landscape but I can't remember the precise details. I'll search for it among my books and report back when I find it. This could take some time (weeks) but I wouldn't have thrown it away. The Ogbournes and other settlements are reference points but I don't recall their significance.

As I was watching this I was pondering something about the video and right then you mentioned about it being supposedly haunted and fairy lore too. It looked like you had the whole place to yourself since I didn't see anyone else around, is that correct?

Thanks for your comment. I was primarily on my own, but there were people passing by at various points when I first arrived. Once the rain came and I filmed inside the tomb, I believe I was alone, but can't be 100% certain.

@@walkingthewyrd Thank you too. At 3:02 I heard a lady and man talking for a few seconds but from 3:12 to about 3:30 I heard several people talking and thought it must be a group of visitors. It sounded like they were around the corner or on top of the burial site. Although they were fairly audible I couldn't make out anything they said. I really appreciate you showing us this site, especially inside the burial chambers. It's really amazing!
