Western denial today ‘far more sinister, outraging’ than during Nakba: Ilan Pappe

Ilan Pappe, the author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, joins Al Jazeera's live and highlights the enabling role of Western countries in Israel’s war on Gaza, describing it as “even worse” than their stance during the Nakba. He explains that in 1948, the lack of television and smartphones made it easier to cover up the ethnic cleansing, but today, with the events displayed on screens, denial is far more sinister and outrageous.

The Nakba, too, has been downplayed and misrepresented, time and again, in the mainstream media across the world. And beyond that, it is in fact the official policy of the state of Israel to systemically and consistently deny Palestinian suffering. In fact, the whole Israeli settler colony is built on the denial of the very existence of a Palestinian people, let alone their Nakba.

Today I saw a long commercial for the federation of christians and jews asking for $45 for food boxes for war displaced israelis. Now if they are really hungry, why are they taking a bus ride to catch up with food trucks taking food to Gazans? The squatters portrayed as being under bombardment in the commercial, destroyed truckloads of food and burned trucks. So are they in need of food? Or does their government stage these performances?
