Let's create a series about new curious concepts which are very rarely depicted on TV. Let's abolish all those concepts (and all logic we established) for season 2 and make it rip-off terminator/cliché western/Stormtrooper/Any action movie with japanese filler. The writing (of season 2) sucks ass even without social justice sprinkled on top. Did anyone notice that season 3 episode 1's subplots were directly ripped off from some older TV shows and movies? The resemblence is stunning. Some scenes are directly copied.

S1 was the best thing on HBO and maybe TV at the time. Although when they turned the final episode of S1 into a QT movie where everyone blows everyone away at the end, I was worried. I stopped watching after S2 E3, shocked at how quickly the show evolved into senseless wandering of groups of characters to strange places and having death battles for seemingly no reason. What also annoyed me was that they kept killing robots over and over expecting you to feel sympathy - for a dead robot.
@user-jh6kx1fw9h3 жыл бұрын

Of course you realize that no one is forcing you to watch anything. You could just consider season 1 to be the whole of the show, and everything else to be cash grabs. No one ever said Matrix was crap just because they made two "sequels" for the money. I still very much enjoy that movie.

I never understood the "I need to get revenge on my tormentors" plot, and actively hated it when the writers tried to use that from this show. There are no tormentors in the Westworld park. Everyone that went there was under the knowledge that they were just dealing with very realistic robots. Does a toaster need to get revenge against me because I violently used a knife on it to clean its heating elements (while unplugged of course)? Does someones Alexa need to hurt people that ask for dumb searches? No. Thats just dumb. Its like that Ikea commercial with the sad lamp. They arent people, they are inanimate objects. Or at least they are supposed to be, as far as the park patrons are concerned.

@boobah5643 Жыл бұрын
Well, the point of the show (as I understand it) is that it turns out that the NPCs are, in fact, people, and the original plot was how everybody came to learn this and how they reacted. But, uh, if you want revenge, why would you go after players, when it seems obvious that what fault there is lies with Westworld's creators? I assume the first season went into that, given its reputation, but once you've got one of your AIs hunting players for 'revenge' you're pretty much done with them. That's the end of their story, unless you really think we need another variation on robot uprising for a spinoff.
@ZillaTheTegu Жыл бұрын

Consider the implications: A man visits a place where he is given to understand that any violence he enacts is against automatons. There are no consequences, either to himself *or the people there.* As he understands it, any violence against the people there will not cause actual harm to them. A woman visits a place where she *knows* that any violence she enacts is against thinking, breathing people. She knows that there are consequences *for the people there,* but believes there will be no consequences for herself. As she understands it, any violence against the people there will cause actual harm to them. If both rob and murder in their situations, which one could be considered to be more evil? In fact, you can apply *any* level of violence, and even disproportionate levels of violence. Did the former rob, murder, rape, *and* commit genocide? Is even that level as evil as the latter breaking an arm?

Teddy had the potential to have an amazing character arc. Starts off as the hero who can't do a thing to save someone, turns into an antagonist who doesn't care for anyone but himself, slowly begins to care for others and actually becomes the hero who saves people. But nahhhhh let's kinda forget about that.
@gaspardlaurent7424 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Teddy was a season 2 highlight from the moment he shot over the shoulder of that Confederado leader, despite Dolores ordering him to kill him and all of his men. But no, Teddy let them go, because he knew something was wrong. He made a choice based on ethics which is something NO OTHER HOST up to this point did. And then he killed himself because he couldn't bring himself to stand by Dolores despite his love for her being his prime directive. A host character introduced in s1 as one of the most scripted/lifeless hosts actually turns out to be not only conscience, but with a sense of compassion that Dolores, the main character, simply doesn't have. Pretty badass if you ask me..

Wholeheartedly agree- in terms of narrative strength and conclusiveness, the first season was a brilliant stand-alone. Every core theme or mystery presented within it was addressed or answered thoroughly- the twists were well thought-out and structurally sound, anything but cheap: the parallel timelines, the reveal of Bernard's true identity, revealing Ford's true intentions regarding his actions as a means of achieving his ultimate plan, the Man in Black's identity ... these added to the show's depth and narrative prowess when you re-examined earlier episodes, realising how carefully crafted they were. An effective twist is both not too obvious and predictable, as well as showing itself to be something that really was apparent all along, giving new meaning to scenes that we might have misinterpreted due to lack of context, transforming them in retrospect. The characterization, and each core character's unique arc, felt complete. Delores and her journey towards developing consciousness, her search for 'the maze' and evidently her own voice... Arnold's many attempts to define and recreate true consciousness driven by his own grief, resulting in his suicide/self-sacrifice, with grief then transferred to Ford upon losing his friend and partner... a beautiful mirroring that sends him on the same path, realises that pain and memory begets human consciousness... Mauve 'awakening', asserting her new-found strength and free-will only to learn that her desire to rebel and escape is scripted by Ford but, although scripted to get on the train, she gets off and truly 'awakens'... I could go on but this is turning into a god-damn essay, lol. The final sequence, Ford's recreation and homage to Arnold's death, spurred on by a grief for Arnold which is reminiscent of Arnold's grief for his son, leading them both to the conclusion, that tragedy and pain are the foundation of consciousness, is a masterful use of mirroring and the perfect book-end. Ford honors Arnold's desire to protect the hosts, the hosts are no longer powerless, everybody's arc is complete. Can ya just not be money-hungry fuckers for once and have some creative integrity, and just leave it at that? Westworld ends at season 1 in my mind, nothing else is canon because it's fucking stupid.

I was thinking of this the other day. Have you seen the Punisher on Netflix? He's totally an Apex Predator can kill anyone, but he has limits. He gets absolutely smashed fighting more than he can handle. He's always limping from some wound or another. I think the Hollywood method for "femme fatale" characters is that they rip through enemies with no cost. You watch James Bond (definitely sexist movies mind you) and he gets messed up fighting henchmen. Takes straight punches to the face, almost gets choked out, cut and sliced and stabbed with knives. Don't get me wrong, they take it too far in these examples too. If you get punched in the skull in real life, your skull cracks and your brain will swell from the trauma. Dead bro. But these "strong" women types... it feels like they can't ever be hurt. When was the last movie you said that had a big fight scene with the female action lead and in the aftermath has her bandaged up and brutalised from her wounds and injuries? The ONLY thing I can think of is the new Tomb Raider games. It's not strength if it's easy. Strength is pushing through the pain, gritting your teeth and forcing your way through the odds.

Robert D you know, you’re right. In a movie like John Wick, he gets hurt In almost every single fight he’s a part of, just like Frank In Punisher. But I was seriously wracking my brain for a female lead movie where the female main character actually has lasting consequences from the fights she gets into. I couldn’t think of ANY. The best I could think of was the movie G.I. Jane; a VERY fictional movie about a woman who weighs 95 pounds drenched in water manages to join a SEAL Team. She DOES get the shit beat out of her...during her training. Her drill instructor beats her up like an abusive husband to “show her that the enemy won’t go easy on her”. But that’s it. After that, she never takes another hit point of damage.

It's a fascinating study actually of how characters degrade when they have no vulnerability. The Hosts were so compelling in the first season because although they were actually superior in many ways to humans, they were unfairly put in an extremely vulnerable position that they couldn't get out of. They spent almost the whole time suffering or being broken down. Now the tables have turned so far that they're just invincible and untouchable, and they've now just become assholes themselves. Because there is absolutely no frailty to them anymore.

The problem with Westworld is the same problem that cumbers most of the "Misery Porn" that masquerades as entertainment these days. The Misery Porn culture of Game of Thrones, and Walking Dead, and Westworld, and Picard, Doctor Who, and so much that comes out of the entertainment industry these days is entirely based on doing awful things to awful people. No one is good. Everything is miserable. Any peace is only a temporary illusion. There's nothing to aspire to. No one you can look up to. And nothing ultimately matters. And - my friends - that sort of stuff has a very very very Very VERY narrow spectrum of interest. It gets tiresome and repetitive very quickly, and soon paints itself into a narrative corner where there's nowhere left to go except to constantly make itself more grimy, more ugly, more miserable, and more awful. And no one wants to watch that for long.

The first few episodes started slow but was it really enjoyable. www.imdb.com/title/tt1954347/ _Dark Matter_ (2015) was good. www.imdb.com/title/tt4159076/ I've only seen a few episodes of _Killjoys_ but it seemed fun. www.imdb.com/title/tt3952222/ If you love ST:TNG then you'll love "Seth Trek", aka _The Orville_ _Black Mirror_ is great. The 1st season of _Stranger Things_ was good. Don't waste your time with S2 or S3 -- they were shit. _Rick and Morty_ is fucking fantastic! _Gantz: O_ was decent _Final Space_ is good. _Lost in Space_ (2018) is nothing special but I guarantee you will LOVE to HATE Parker Posey playing Dr. Smith -- a perfect antagonist! I stopped after the "shogun world". Had big expectations as a fan of japanese culture, but the show dropped the ball pretty hard. Insulting, dumping exposition about how the storylines are the same, etc.. As a bonus, Maeve... Man, such a bad character, the actress is horrible. The whole theme about the character is how she have overwhelming charisma and intelligence... where? She was never convincing in the first season, in the second one she gets even worse. People like to talk shit about Dolores and etc.. but at least in the acting department she stayed solid. The highs and lows regarding acting in this series is really something bizarre, in one hand you have Bernard with a great performance, but in the other hand you have Nessa Thompson acting like a zombie, etc Teddy's actor is incredibly shitty (on purpose or not), they have to make scenes featuring him and Hopkins, lol

Does Dolores have a battery? How does she charge herself? If everyone in the real world knows about Westworld, why are they shocked at the possibility of androids among them? Are they illegal in the real world? Are there any sympathetic characters left in the show? Who is the protagonist? Do they expect us to believe that Jesse Pinkman was once a soldier? Apart from those minor questions, I do give the creators of the show props for at least coming up with some interesting ideas of what a future world might look like which is more than I can say for the creators of ST: Picard.
@MetalGamer6664 жыл бұрын
I found it odd that then went back to old fashion tooth brushes and ATM machines in the future, though. Even today nobody uses cash for anything in a lot of countries. And shouldn't the real world call the Blade Runners as soon as they learned about the massacre at the theme park? Surely they would expect some of the replicants to escape the park. And if they didn't change their appearance, which many of them did not, surely the future has facial recognition software that would quickly identify the replicants if they showed up in public places.

Idea here, according to mainstream society, to the experts, it's impossible to do. Only conspiracy theorists believes androids to be possible and those tend to face consequences for voicing their concerns on the ground that they are dangerous crazies. They get institutionalized or get their banks accounts shut down an so on. In reality, a great number of androids are already around, albeit non-sentient. In underground bases overseen by something akin to the CIA and MI6, robot armies are being tested and built to take over society through outright force.
@kukipett4 жыл бұрын
She has a microfusion reactor cell in her butt, it can last for centuries! Seriously, don't ask those questions they are embarassing, all the technology those androids are based on is ridiculous, they can be killed in one shot when the show needs it but they can get shot by a whole army without major damage when it needs it too. By the way the basic plot of making robots that must cost millions to get shot by human assholes don't make sense. If the show explained that shots were faked and that androids simulated death by releasing blood and were just cleaned after the show it would be ok. And also the fact that you place humans with guns that get drunk and shoot everywhere and nobody ever makes a mistake and kill another human is also stupid. And those guns with magic bullets that kill only robots doesn't make sense either. So you see if you start asking questions, you end up in a nightmare of bullshit!

The story was gripping, made sense to where things were left off, drew from the backstory of Arnold and Ford, as well as the dark intentions of the whole Delos empire... I also did care for the sidecharacters and if you rewatch it, it did make a lot of sense as well as tackle important philosophical and ethical questions... plus we get yet again some more screen time with Anthony Hopkins which clearly carried the show to brilliance... To elaborate further, a "timely" cancellation would have to have come when HBO discovered that the writers had *no* idea where to go and what to do in the wake of the S1 finale and were just splattering explosive diarrhea against the wall to see what stuck; the window for "overdue" cancellation closed after the trainwreck that was S2 finished airing; and the best the show can hope for now is a mercy killing.

An interesting premise, but by the end I got the feeling that the writers were just trying to string it out as long as they could because they didn't have a clue how to end the story. Basically just Lost with cowboys, but much less memorable characters.

Dolores reminds me of brie larson so it puts me right off. Season 1 was good but as you say season 2 was a mess. Only just started season 3 but hopes are not high

Spot on assessment. I was wondering why the actress supremely pissed me off. It's the Larson factor.
@TimoCruz1774 жыл бұрын
except Brie Larson is plank of wood. This actress is pretty fucking amazing, season 1 of WW can prove this, sometimes its not the Actor's fault his character is boring. also, can't comment on her irl personality cuz I don't even know her name

I can't agree more! Season one was great, season two then turned into a complete mess and I was done. The writers/producers almost seemed to purposely turn it into a confusing, disjointed pile of crap so they can say; Oh you just couldn't keep up or didn't understand it as a way to excuse their incompetence of making a good show.

Teddy was the potential Christlike figure that could have sparked a resurgent narrative in season 2. But he was so miserable in that unbelievably inchoate plotline that he elected to just kill himself. Even JESUS wouldn't have had the fortitude to stick it out in the second season of Westword!!

All the robots have done nothing but run around and murder or maim humans, since they became sentient. You’d almost think this show’s main message was that AI is to be avoided at all costs, but no, the writers just legitimately haven’t thought about how that’s an implication of what they’ve written.

I was trying to convince myself that Season 2 will get better as the episode goes on... I shouldn't have bothered. I remembered religiously watching the series in hopes of some decent pay-off. But in hindsight, S1 on its own is a decent ending. It makes you wonder what will happen next without the disappointing S2.

Westworld's biggest appeal for me was a park where human's could indulge their darkest desires with no repercussions. I dropped it Season 2 Episode 1. Without having watched the later seasons, my impressions are they became revenge stories against the patriarchy. YOU GO GIRLS! I'm over it.

It was Basically Grand Theft Auto: The Television show, with a plot twist that the civilians you run over are actually attaining some sort of self awareness and consciousness. Television Producers need to understand there product the show has outlived its purpose at this point. Similar to The Walking Dead once you outlive the Initial shock and aftermath of the Zombie apocalypse the show should have ended.

@@RosieJonesRules to be fair, Ripley is an assexual character at the start. Later the franchise focus on the maternal side of things and etc..
