Had Dexa scan 3 days before I stepped onto stage with ridiculously shredded glutes. I feel I was around 6 percent. Dexa put me at 9.1 percent.

Dexa has a hard time with water/glycogen I believe. So it may be more accurate for someone like Tristyn Lee. The MRI is the golden standard

Body composition scales are extremely useful for tracking progress at home over months and years, that is if you keep using that one scale the whole time. I don't care if the number is accurate when I see a trend over 3 years steadily going down.

It really depends how developed your muscles are too, if your muscles are not too developed don't compare yourself with a person with the same fat percentage who has more muscular development, if you look less shredded than them that just means that you have to train your muscles more, not even counting genetics.

I suspect this is BS. First, why would someone who is 5’7” & 400lbs get a DEXA? Also, I doubt the person who administered the test would tell you the results without retesting or telling you something is off.

Dexa is a joke. I only did one BB show in my life. I was 27. The show was in Long Beach, CA, my home town. I had a Dexa at UCLA 5 days before the show . It had me at 8.8%. I was depressed as hell. Thought about not doing the show. I ended up 2nd place in my division. I was at the show's after party later and was telling people that I was basically 9% BF. They told me I was insane, that I was at most 5% and maybe lower...these were experienced bodybuilders telling me this. I never used a Dexa again.

Like weighing one's self, measuring body fat % should be done using the same process every time. Does that mean it's accurate? No. It simply shows you progress or regress.

I think I generally have a pretty good idea of a person's body fat levels. Mostly from watching Coach Greg. I was enjoying guessing subscribers body fat percentages during those videos and very often would guess the same as Coach Greg. Having said that I have problems judging my own. Im super lean everywhere but have slight love handles and a little excess fat around my bottom 2 abs. Juding by that area Id say about %17, but everywhere else it'd be under %10. Makes it difficult to get shredded all over without getting to what looks unhealthy. If I had to guess my overall body fat levels Id say about 12 or 13 percent. Edit: Just saw the part of the video with Omar. I now suspect Im not too far off with the %12 guess. My lower abs/waist is a few percent leaner than his and somewhat leaner everywhere else. I do have a little more muscle than he appears to as well though, which makes it a little tricky to draw a conclusion. Very likely I have a touch of body dysmorphia though too which doesnt help.

It SHOULD be easy to compare ourselves to someone similar after all the informative videos Coach has made on the subject. But you know, body dysmorphia. I'm a 5'11" female, 155lbs, i train weights and distance running. I can see definition in my abs and my back. On a confident day i feel like I'm 18%. But then i second guess myself and think I'm more like 25-28% because like models at my height are 20lbs less. Idk!

I hear ya. I'm 5ft5 but the same BMI. Our bodies are kind of stupid as far as worrying about this kind of thing is concerned. Timing of the month makes a ridiculous difference - both physically and mentally. That's the reason why I'm either wearing a tightly fitted top, or a big baggy thing, six sizes too big - never anything in-between 😉

One math error (I went to school for physics, so I pick up on this). The formula for body weight is (lean body mass)/(1- bf%) Take a 100-pound lean body mass individual at 15% bf and 7.5% bf. The first is 117.6 pounds and the second is 108 pounds. This would be 17.6 pounds of fat and 8 pounds of fat. Cutting bf% in half does not cut the amount of fat a person has in half. At high bf % this variance is way larger. 100% body fat would be infinite fat. The video this video was commentating on also messed up the math.

Been training people for 4 years at a gym, we got an electric impedence fat machine, when I use it, It usually shoots me far below where I am, on the calipers I've been 14-16%, my eyes tell me 12-13%, machine says 8.4%. As for people it seems to put men lower and women higher by a 2-3 points diviation. Would like to try dexa and water and MRI to have a bigger understanding of this. My body fat percentage was incredibly high a couple of years ago, but my problem wasn't really way too much fat, I looked pretty normal, or even small... My problem was that I was so under muscled that the percent values were very skewed. I've been putting on muscle for a couple of years and only lost about 12lbs of actual weight but that's after gaining at least that much in muscle which means I've lost twice that amount of body fat while increasing muscle. Now I estimate I've recently passed 25% body fat and I'm still on the road to get at or below 20% where my target is. Hopefully that's just about this time next year.

I use the bodpod. As far as i care, if the exact same system says I'm moving in the right direction then I'm good. If it's off by a couple percent, it doesn't change anything for me. It shouldn't matter to anyone else either. My bf belongs to me, worry about your own.

My legs look defined even at 18% ish meanwhile my upper body looks like sht imo even down at 13 that i dropped last year after a big ol diet. It's about muscle mass and fat distribution, maybe grow your legs a bit more and they'll pop through. Similarly to abs you can get low bf and still not have abs if they are undeveloped.

I got 11.2% on a bioimpedence scale (upper & lower) one month. And a month later I'd put on 0.3kg (plus another 0.6kg to take into account not having breakfast or drinking water that morning) and it showed my body fat percentage to be 13%. I did put on 0.9kg in a month (first time in half a year going on a bulk), but not all of it would've been fat (I'd guess more like half and half). And the test showed I'd actually lost 0.7kg of muscle 😂

I’m sure I’m about 33% body fat minimum. I always bust my ass at the gym but tbh anything below 25% body fat for me is pure misery. I’m slowly trying to climb down to a lower percentage for a long period of time and maingain to lower my set point. Greg drops another gem!

It's probably a certain weight that you hit that makes you feel miserable. If you can hit that weight you are at 25%, but have an extra few pounds of muscle, you bodyfat level will be lower, and should still feel OK, like your maintenance calories will be higher. The more you have to shred to hit that weight, the worse you will feel. Take your time shredding too. Gradual small progress will get you there in time

Dexascans more often than not underreport BF%. I know because I literally got tested at 6% before. Many people are deluded.

@@UltimateBallaPOM Well my frame is really very slender (no broad shoulders and a small waist) and I am not super muscular like you, not even close, but I also don't look like a "skeleton" as you often see as a starting physique in these transformation videos. I have definition everywhere and I am pretty happy with my looks. I am just curious how can my abs and a bunch of other muscles like quads be so defined and also not totally weak (e.g. legpress 1rm is 680 lb at the moment) and still 25% BF... the dexa might need calibration idk

I am also 6'3 but i am 85kg at 16% body fat, my weighst is small and my shoulders are broad, i bench 100kg for 3 reps and squat 160kg for 4. Weight compisition is different for everyone, there are skinny heavy weights and muscular light weights. Yeah that’s really under weight! I’m 6 foot 2 with a lot of muscle and went from a healthy 94kg down to 80kg in a matter of months (felt like utter garbage) and I was a skeleton! My gfs family said I looked like a cancerpatient

While I can't say it's the case for everyone, everytime I see an online person claim a certain BF%, I just add 5-10% to that and guarantee I'll be correct most of the time. Though, it's not to say body dysmorphia is not common; Joe Fazer is a good example.

Once I did a Dexa scan and it put me at a whopping 34 % body fat, I looked 25 % max. Scale told me 18 %, skin fold was around 24 or so, can't remember. That was a while ago, now I weigh a lot more and have a fourpack (again), so it's at least going in the right direction. I guess about 20-25 % now, gained some weight after surgery, getting back to the gym. Tracking my weight and my lifts to keep track. Measuring tapes didn't work so well for me because I was inconsistent with where exactly and how tight I was measuring. If pants fit is still a good indicator.

A proper bulk takes years to put on real muscle. You dont gain muscle with a 3 month bulk. It takes years and years to build muscle.

I also recon that 10% body fat doesnt look the same for everyone, because of the build and body fat distribution on people can be very different as a result of genetics and physical activity, for example, with my laser eye vision I predicted that omar also was 15%, they way I predicted it is how defined the abs are.

I have body dysmorphia and I thought I was pretty lean while training for a Spartan. It told me 27.9% I'm NOT ...SO I starved myself lost 9 lbs I didn't have to lose. It told me 26.9. I lost my boobs. I had to special order bras to fit. I haven't come back. I'm around 20% on a bad day with my eyes that tell me I'm fat. My bioimpedence scale says 16% I'm definitely not that low either. I definitely don't trust dexa.

Fun fact: An average brain weighs about 3lbs and is appr. 60% fat. So on a 200lbs person, that's 2lbs or 1% of body fat you want to have at least😅

Hey Greg, I have one question regarding the laser eye body fat test. Is it more difficult to estimate a person’s body fat if they have lost excessive fat? Say 50+ lbs? Where the skin isn’t as tight as it once was.

Yes it is. Everything above 20% Bodyfat is very hard to guess.

Personally I think he looks far fatter than 13.7%. I look significantly leaner than him and clocked in at 14.6% on the DEXA. I have clear visible six pack, and extremely good muscle definition. Skinfold calipers AND inbody BIA both clock me at 9% bodyfat. In reality I don't know what I really am, but there's no way I'm 14.6% lol. Made me lose all faith in DEXA accuracy

Do you think there is any use in using the same scanner over a period of time. The actual number might be nonsense but is it accurate enough for tracking over time?

Great video coach Greg Do you think Omar's physique should be what the majority aim for? Not everyone has the genetics to be single digit and function great, whilst holding muscle I know in today's world of Social media, many younger guys will think it's not a great physique, but i challenge those to actually look around at the population. Omar lools great and the physique is attainable for the vast majority. You always say that 15% is a great physique for men and i think this is another example. Health and fitness first and of your genetics allow you to be shredded and feel good? Then happy days

Thia scales are mostly incorrect. I have tried 3 of them, and all say I have 10%+/- 0.2% bf, but I am certainly fater. Compared to pictures on the Internet of various bf, I am around 15%. So they're off by 5 whole percents

Would lose skin effect readings as well? I went from 367lbs to 139 and my scales said 7 to 8 I thought I was closer to 10-12% now I'm 148 after a year of going to the gym and they say 9 to 9.5 and I think I'm closer to 15-20. I got referred for a operation so I can now gain weight and I'm planning on going on a bulk to 160ish. Im just sick of my ribs sticking out then after that when I think I get to 20% I'll cut then maingain
