21 when he released this song, he's since slightly changed his vocal style. Listen to "Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie - Live from Speedy Creek". It'll break your heart. sidenote: notice the pause and build up of the intensity of the song from the time he discovers Kate with her new lover and when he finally explodes and puts three rounds into Kate McCannon. It's him seeing this and trying to process through the rage that just overcomes him. Incredible storytelling.

There's quite a few beautiful implications in this song that I've noticed: 1. the implication that they've been together a bit longer than a couple simply ''seeing each other'' - he saved a 1/4 of his pay to pay for the ring, which kinda implies how long they've been together, being that it would take quite a bit of time to save, especially if it's unskilled work. 2. The implication of also shooting the other lover and that he has a 6 shooter - he put 3 rounds into Kate, which could mean he unloaded half his barrel into her and the other into him.

My maternal grandfather was from Kentucky originally and he used to joke that country music back in his day was always about a woman that the guy couldn't have or about a woman that did the guy wrong. Garth Brooks's song "And The Thunder Rolls" comes to mind, another country song with a twist to the story. I also like Kenny Rogers's "Coward Of The County"- another one that's kinda like this one in a way, solid story with a twist in the song. But anyway... OMG! YES! Ray I was thinking the same thing! I like how he uses the guitar to tell a part of the story too. In the start, he plucks the strings(popular in the west and late 1800s), but once he shoots kate, he moved to strumming, which was the first popular way of playing early modern guitars, it was primitive and wild. When the word at the end of a lyric doesn't have enough syllables to finish on the note asserted by the established pattern, he uses the guitar to get to that note when otherwise he would've used his voice.
