RAF Typhoon pilots from 1 Squadron are preparing to deploy to Romania in the next few weeks to provide the country with Quick Reaction Alert. They will take over from their Lossiemouth colleagues, 2 Squadron, who are currently there as part of NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing Mission.

It's beyond amazing. I first saw it at Farnborough in 2014. You had the mainstays but the Typhoon moved like a UFO. And that noise! I think they're at Goodwood this year so I'm looking forward to seeing them again :)

Don't mess with the RAF; the last time a foreign air force decided to engage the RAF in aerial combat was during the Falklands war and I'm sure the Argentines are still recovering from the pasting they received! Total Harriers shot down:0 Total Argentine planes shot down: 31! Don't forget those kills were against all the odds as the Argentine air force had around 250 aircrafts at their disposal while the RAF had a total of only 20 harriers! But superior training and the then totally new type of aircraft in the Harrier made all the difference!

The Royal Scots Dragoons, REME, Military Police & elements of the Army air Corp are now based at Leuchars so its not as if the bases are sat empty. The F16s are first gen relics. Funnily enough the Mig 21 Lancers are actually more technically advanced that the F16s in the inventory. Not to mention operational costs and sortie rates

@@SM-zx9mx not all Mig21s or F16s are the same. Different generations with different parts. The lancers have better avionics than the block 15 F16s. It's like comparing an E30 BMW M3 to an F80 BMW M3.

@@SM-zx9mx As I mentioned: operational costs and sortie rates. The MIGs are highly maneuverable interceptors (capable of Mach 2) that are relatively cheap to run and are more modern than the F16s. The block 15 F16s have aged air frames and outdated avionics - it's more of a hassle to keep them running when they're on their deathbed.
