I developed all of these symptoms except for heart problems and kidney stones (thank God). I am glad that I didn't wait longer than five years after diagnosis because by the time I had surgery, I was feeling terrible. It's taking a long time for me to feel better after surgery, but probably because I was already 50 by the time I had surgery and because the parathyroid gland had been causing problems for at least five years, probably a lot longer before we thought to see a doctor about my symptoms. I'm glad that I had the surgery because as bad as I feel now, I realize that I would eventually be even worse off if I hadn't done anything. This video explains just how serious HPT really is. Thanks!

I am a special case and I think I caught it early. I had a phone consultation with you 2 years ago. You couldn't find it in the CT scan. I had surgery almost 3 weeks ago with Dr. Chen and feeling so much better. My top left adenoma was 0.48 instead of 0.2 to 0.3. My PTH was always 20-40 when you tested me but the months before surgery it finally got to 116. Calcium dipped to low levels during my pregnancy and I have osteopenia in left femoral arm. It was my bad pregnancy labs that gave me motivation to keep looking for answers.

I’m 99.9% sure this is what is and has been wrong with me for years now. Went to gastro. Had all the scopes top and bottom nothing. Had kidney stones a few times now. Nephrologist says oh we don’t know why this happens. BS. I have constant high calcium in my urine and all he does is up the diuretics. That’s NOT the answer. When I ask questions oh no it’s not that. I NEED HELP!

Sorry to hear it RM. I would suggest getting the following labs to assess: Calcium, PTH intact, Vitamin D at 8 AM and fasting. To get a sense of your parathyroid function.

I got an ultrasound yesterday and the tech showed me how enlarged my parathyroid was and said she’s never seen a bigger one. However, when I got the lab results back, the parathyroid wasn’t even mentioned and they said everything was “normal.” I’m so frustrated, would you recommend going to a private endocrinologist for another opinion?

Hi Sunny, checking parathyroid hormone is not routinely done with labs. Check to see if it was tested. If not, then you’ll have to do a blood test fasting at 8AM to check for calcium/PTH intact/vitamin D. To see how your parathyroid gland is functioning

What about secondary HPT? Left untreated? Same consequences?

Yes in the long term the consequences are the same and in the case of kidney failure patients potentially even more challenging.
