The whole story is bizarre. Besides the "confession" of Kim Hyon-hui by SK´s Secret Service, there is no evidence that KAL 858 was ever even bombed.

I wish they had included this on the Mayday Air Disaster series. I don't even remember hearing about it on the news, but that was probably my fault. I was a busy teen and didn't pay much attention to the news then.

Certainly! If the TV series Mayday: Air Disaster were to make a documentary about the bombing of Korean Air Flight 858, a suitable title could be "Unmasking Terror". This title captures the essence of the incident while highlighting the investigative nature of the documentary.

Surprised that this accident wasn’t on Air Crash Investigation. Sadly, during the late 1900s Korean Air had a poor safety record and this accident even though wasn’t caused by pilot error or mechanical error still caused a dent in the airline at that time.

How was the absence of the two bombers not detected by the airline personnel on board? No air hostess, no reboarding ground crew, nobody noticed two empty seats. That's so weird. A major oversight like that, had it been observed by anybody, could have led to opening the overhead compartment, and finding suspicious luggage. Were there more accomplices?

My guess? This was the 80s, not many people suspecting bombings. It's nowadays that people are suspicious of everything they see on a plane and an airport.

Before 9/11, airline security was pretty lax. It wasn't until Lockerbie that the rules were put in place about bags boarded only with a passenger.

Because until the last 30 to 35 years had happened, no one paid much attention to bags left on a stopover like that , hence why terrorists learned they could take advantage of that oversight in security on planes at airports worldwide. Several horrible bombings contributed to investigators of those flights figuring out some methods they used to get past security protocols. Only after studying how bombings (or plane wrecks) happened, can the experts warn against the next new thing they've found to exploit to kill people. I doubt they ever checked for bags left on planes at stopovers before the late 80's, just like, before 9/11/2001 most Americans would've never thought terrorists could have hijacked 4 passenger jets, in mid air, all freshly loaded to the brim with fuel, within 2 hours with box cutters.... or that they'd ask for nothing, no threats, no demands, no hostage taking for days...no, they would immediately point 2 of them at the largest skyscrapers in the whole country & the other 2 right for the White House & the Pentagon intending to inflict maximum destruction & death on George Bush Jr. and Sr. & their country, killing all 19 of themselves in the process !! Who'd ever have believed that our air controllers in N.Y. or D.C. (who control that air space day & night & are the ones who might NEED TO ALERT US & the Air Force if anyone invaded us by air) did not already have an automatic dedicated red phone line straight to the Air Force's Admiral or General or to the head of the Pentagon in case any one of those air controllers saw the need to dispatch F5's to chase & shoot down any enemy planes (or one of our own that'd been hijacked or gone rogue and deadly) I'm sure they have all those things in place NOW, but they did not on 9/11 and it still amazes me how the supposedly brightest people we have in our military branches, who are tasked with protecting the citizens daily, overlooked such basic necessary items & obvious parts of planning in the event we were attacked, such as ; failing to have a number posted everywhere, or a direct phone line for air controllers to contact THE ONE OR ONES AUTHORIZED TO dispatch F5's, immediately, it took forever on 9/11 to get them in the air abd to find the right person to make the call & GIVE THE ORDER. And why no button in place for shutting a jet off mid air if needed? Why not carry some parachutes for passengers to put on, give them a chance for crying out loud ! ? They had NOTHING planned or tested or even thought about on 9/11 because of their hubris. Any 12 year old would've prepared better for everything that happened that day, especially when you consider that the high up ones had known about the threats ahead of time that Osama was going to hijack & use jets that way !

The CIA committed this terrorist attack to blame on socialist Korea and justify US imperialist aggression If the DPRK did this to scare people, they wouldn't have denied it. Killing southern Koreans also goes against their Korean patriot ideology. In addition, the "perpetrator" was not punished and the wreckage was somehow never found, almost like someone doesn't want it to be investigated...
