This is a complete Class Guide to help you in Vintage Story. This is a great class guide for new players or veterans, as we have recommendations for all skill levels. We cover all of the character customizations classes in Vintage Story including the Commoner, Hunter, Malefactor, Clockmaker, Blackguard, and Tailor.
All the info was gathered from in game testing or from the vintage Story wiki.

Really the only thing stopping me from getting this game, no magic, it would really benefit from something along those lines, even with mods

Keep in mind that "sneaking" in this game does nothing (at this point in time anyway) except prevent you from falling off edges. The "furtive" trait of the Malefactor is the only thing that allows you to slip by things due to its reduced aggro range. But here is the important thing to consider regarding this trait, *especially* for hardcore runs that use limited lives: If you do NOT spot the predator in the landscape, then the reduced aggro range directly translates into a "closer initial engagement range" and that, in simpler words means: The animal will be right on your arse if you bumble into it. Couple that with your lower health... and you can be sent into the void with extreme ease, especially if you skimp on the improvised armor (aka firewood and grass) armor.

Hunter. You pick hunter. You walk faster. You can out run the wolf. You can kite out anyone. You dont need to mine effeciently becauae you walk to the next node quicker. There is also clock maker.

KZbin doesn't have many tutorials for VS mods in general. (If any) It's prime real-estate.

Early game, hunter is probably the best. Easy bow, but even easier arrows, not even needing feathers. In the first days of multiplayer, people will love you. A little later in the progression and malefactors starts picking up slack since they don't lose out on any resources due to penalties. Not losing range damage mixed in with a weaker scent means spear chucking still works great with them. Just gotta sneak a little closer. The sling is a hard sell, needing 20 flax to make at time of writing. Tailor is great once you've started harvesting flax, for their exclusive armors. Not much else to say, it's an easily understood specialist class. Blackguards suck for early game, they can't defeat rabbits with a single spear throw for example, and chasing them is out of the question. Once you have decent armor though, well... "The only thing they fear is you" starts playing. They really are a low acceleration, high top speed kinda class, since their penalties matter less in later stages (ex: hunger rate doesn't matter when a bowl of food stops hunger dropping). Expect your group to rely on you for "pest control". Clockwork is too specialist for me to comment on, haven't played it either. Commoner is for those who want to do better in melee than a malefactor. Yeah thats about it. They get no unique recipes, so their lack of downside is their specialty. The closest downside I think of is a malefactors lower HP and melee strength. So if you want to bonk things, or are a new solo player, it's a good-ish option. In multiplayer with friends, don't bother with commoner. Any downside one class has, can be made up for with another, on top of accessing more recipes.

We were talking about this as we posted it actually lol. That's the thing with these highly edited scripted videos. You don't often realize the mistakes you've made until it's way too late in the process.

Tried them all Malefactor still my favorite. The ability to pet bears and wolves is nice ;)

Sadly, it also means the beast is right in your face if you bumble into it. 35% less aggro range directly translates to : predator is 35% closer in a surprise engagement than all the other classes.

Most of the classes would only be beneficial if you play multiplayer with friends that all have a different class to make best use of everyone's bonuses and unique craft options but in singleplayer hunter and forager is probably the only good choices

I like clockmaker the best. Faster movement speed feels really nice, reduced temporal gears to repair translocators makes things much easier, and taming locusts is a very interesting mechanic. As for the health and damage penalties, I feel as though they become negligible once you enter mid or late game and have access to good weapons and armor.

I went with the hunter for my first playthrough as I didn't plan on farming much and plan on being semi nomadic with the goal of reaching the arctic.

I'm not sure I'd classify the Tailor's buffs as anything approaching "strong." lol Their only real benefit is the ability to make tailored gambeson, which means you want to play with one, but playing AS a tailor is just pain.

Yeah, I would argue that the Tailor is designed to be the "hard mode" class because the benefits in no way make up for the downsides. The ability to make a Tailored Gambeson (because every other piece of clothing is basically cosmetic additions) and an extra 10% more durability for said Tailored Gambeson (because why else would you be playing Tailor other than to wear that specifically?) is not equivalent to 10% less loot for foraging, 10% less loot from animals, 25% slower animal harvesting, 10% slower mining, and 2 less maximum health. Every other class has some kind a niche that they specialize in that makes them stand out from the other classes. Tailor is basically just a worse Commoner with the ability to flex with fancy clothes and shields.

I am excited for the class rework from the devs, and I'm curious what people will do to make their own mods that change and expand the classes in this game. As it is, I don't like the way classes work, and some are inherently better at late-game or are more desired in multi-player. I wonder what solutions the devs or mod makers will come up with. Give my boy the Clockmaker some love.

@The Vintarian 2:46 I do not know if you found this out yourself or if someone already corrected you on this, but... it's not pronounced Black Guard.. even if THAT is indeed what it says.. I have also pronounced this wrong for years untill I played a game with this class a long time ago.. It is pronounced BLAGGARD.. and stands for a scoundrel, a person that lives in lower society, a crook etc. don't believe me? look it up!

In the vintage story world the Blackguards are a faction that has some authority in the under ground government so they aren't the same.

Dig down until one rock type transitions into another. Strip mine on the border between them and you will find it

Drawbacks on the hunter are negated by Ore Bombs.

Yeah and you have lower chance to get crystalized ores

@@k3kr crystal ore makes up about 1% of the total ore you obtain from a vain. Using a bomb and not getting crystals is better then the flat %5 loss.

Actually it's not, internally every class *except* hunter get a hidden +10% chance to get an extra ore when mining, which means that any method of mining that isn't not being a hunter will not benefit from this invisible bonus. You should continue to use ore bombs though just because of how effective they are at making short work of large veins, and all you're really losing out on are the crystalline ore chunks.

Blackguard is pronounced more like 'Blaggard' It's an old English word

Blackguard is pronounced Blackguard. Blaggard is an alternate and valid spelling for it, though. Every Blackguard is also a Blaggard, if you want him to, but only the Blackguard can also be a Blackguard. In other words: Blackguard = Blackguard = Blaggard Blaggard = Blaggard
