The title should be "What country has the most PoW during WWII. the word surrendered does not seem right.
@26adex
@26adex Жыл бұрын
Yes that's disrespectful. Often in countries like Greece or Poland it was because of allies failing in the beginning of war, and most surrendered because they literally got no ammo left to fight while most soldiers in units fought to death before using all of their ammunition, and you can't fight with spoons against tanks, also most of pow in occupied Poland got killed or sent to labour (death) camps. That's not surrendering, that's fighting to the point it's impossible no more. Similar with soviets (after 1942)

My great grandfather fought in the British Army and spent the last 12 months of the war in a POW camp in Germany… as they were losing the war, so you can imagine how terrible the conditions were and how badly they were treated. He was thought to have been killed and my great grandmother received a telegram to say he’d been killed in battle… only for him to show up in 1945. He was award the MC (Britain’s 2nd highest medal behind the VC). He was a great man and stunningly brave.

In Greece it was a weird situation. When the Germans attacked and took the country those soldiers were all surrounded in Northern Epirus. It was true that mainly Serbs were held as POWs as Croats and Muslims were given opportunity to join the ranks of Ustashe, the army of the newly formed Croatian puppet state. Of course, there were some of the very bright examples of Muslims (Bosniaks) or Slovenes who choosed to stay in captivity with their brothers in arms instead of siding with the fascists. Greece and Yugoslavia never surrendered. The thing is that, when Germany attacked Yugoslavia, and later Greece, they went through their only unprotected borders. The Yugoslav and Greek armies were busy holding of the Italians in Albania and the Bulgarians. This is why the Germans just stormed through with Panzers and trucks, while the Greeks and Yugoslavians had mules and horses. When Greece fell, most of their army of 350.000 men was still fighting, the majority in Northern Epirus, modern day southern Albania, and the rest in the border with Bulgaria. Hitler himself recognized the valiance and spirit of the Greek people, who fought "with undying determination for their fatherland, and despite the mistakes of their government never gave up, until all resistance was futile and senseless". Hitler had a vague respect and admiration for ancient cultures like the Romans or the Greeks, because he believed that pagan religions were the "true" roots of Europe, and not Christianity, which he considered a "Jewish plot to make the Europeans weak". This is the reason why all Greek soldiers were disarmed and released. Shortly after however, Hitler's crimes in the Balkans began, and most of these people were out in the mountains fighting again.

He wanted to become a fighter pilot, but since he couldn't and really wanted to be in the airforce, he decided to go with the bomber squad. I think he might have passed for some bad situations in USSR, because he got crazy there and mentally disabled. My great grandfather and his brothers were taken as POWs during the invasion of Yugoslavia. Being Serbian they were treated badly but because they had blue or green eyes they were treated better than other Serbs, they were sent to a labour camp somewhere near Vienna where they ( my forefathers ) were assigned to help Austrian widows, whose husbands were high ranking officers that died in combat, helping them in and around their homes, being hulking men with exceptional masculine beauty many of them even managed to get more freedom because of the widows that had fallen in love with them. So much so that they managed to manipulate these women to use their authority to give all the Serbs in that labour camp as much liberty as is possible in such an environment. After the war they all went back to our place of origin in the Serbian region of Kolubara where afterwards many times these Austrian women would come begging for them to live with them in Austria. Needless to say they refused and continued to live out their lives as farmers, refusing to betray their homeland and their families for a better life, as you can imagine this and many other stories remind me of why I am proud of being a Serb and a direct descendant of such Serbian warriors.
