Interesting. I'm sort of the opposite end from you where I used to have a very lengthy 90 minute bus + train commute to work, but have just switched jobs to where I'm MUCH closer but not feasible on public transit. I figured I would love the shorter drive but miss the ability to do other things (like sleeping/reading) on the way to work. But there are little things I didn't expect, like no longer really worrying exactly what time I'm leaving home or work -- no bus schedule to manage -- and no worries about the weather. It's also easier to make detours on my commute to pick up things on the way home. I suppose if it weren't so hilly I'd consider a bike, but commuting in our ioniq is just so easy.

Great :) [As I type this I’m worrying about which bus is next in the schedule! ;) ]

I would think that electric bicycles can be a game changer for inner city transportation. Their value vs. cost today is borderline great for those who can make the move and will use one often, and their range is really good for the “nice day” rides to work or wherever. Expanding this into the electric quadricycle (with a roof and windshield) will come as battery densities/costs mature. This technology creates a miniature car if it has package space to permit a handbag or light grocery run at a cost that’s much more favorable than owning a car, and no real maintenance other than plugging it in.

Thanks. I’ve been in touch with Rad Power Bikes’ partner in Copenhagen. Hoping to test out the cargo e-bike. Seems like I could get both my children and me on one! :)

We should talk, been living in Aarhus/Denmark for over a decade (left US in 2004), been following EVs since 2008, and have a lot of ideas about them here in DK. I know exactly where you are having been there myself.

I find it's not the day-to-day commuting or shopping that determines my need for a vehicle but the extra-curricular activities. I can get through a large part of the year bicycle commuting but on the weekend I am often traveling with kayaks for up to 100 km. You seemed to be carrying drums in your car occasionally. How has not having a car impacted on your other activities?
@knoxieman5 жыл бұрын
You can make your own ebike very easily, it won't be limited to useless power levels and will be truly a replacement for a car for short range trips, in the same way you got used to the comforts of your car you will get used to being out in the elements, I've been using ebikes for commuting and local trips for 20 years now, they absolutely rock.

My life never was car based. I go to work by train and only use the car for when I need to cover distances in my spare time. But I have to admit that I've been driving a lot more these last few months since getting the Ioniq, almost doubling my monthly driving distance. And next month ... I'll be saying it all goodbye. Only a screwup now will prevent me from moving to an area of the world where EVs almost don't exist :( . And to make matters worse, traffic over there is horrible. Just leaving the building's parking will usually cost you +10 minutes and land you in traffic that's slow. Walking would be faster for the first kilometer. Damn, I'm gonna miss that car.

It's good you've had this chance to get a bit of perspective on what transport you need. If you get another EV, perhaps you should also get a simple electric bicycle just for exercise and fun.

I do wish you didn't have to pay a battery rental on a tizzy, although quirky I would definitely have one at 4or5k.

@@PlanetCypher_ I thought they already eliminated battery leasing for Zoe, Twizy, Kangoo ...etc... but they didn't. That's too bad, but aftermarket batteries will soon be available, so you'll be able to buy such vehicles without batteries, then put in a custom battery pack, made from Tesla modules ;)

@@ZeroTailpipe They made a 100kWh pack for the BMW i3, and were promising they'll make packs for other popular EVs too ... I haven't read about them since then kzbin.info/www/bejne/raXOg3SMrb1om5I BUT it'll happen for sure, when battery prices will come down just a bit more. There are a lot of good EVs out there with too small (or failing) batteries.

Cities need to do more to encourage bicycle use. Bicycles are fossil fuels free transportation. Bicycles offer healthy exercise and are good for the planet. Protected bike lanes encourage more children and older adults to ride a bicycle. Try an Ebike for local transport. They are great. Ride to work, ride to school or ride for fun. An electric car is great if you really need it but a bicycle added into the transportation mix make life and cities better.

Yes! Entirely understand your missing the sensations of driving which are amplified by EVs. A bit like returning from a fortnights holiday with no driving and rediscovering that mobility and responsibility. EV Man's channel has just looked at other EV forms in the UK most of which are, of course, illegal because our government has no EV vision. Scooters, assisted cycles, Etc banned, but invalid carriages and electric rickshaws are ok. No insurance, tax or other requirements. At least Denmark has relatively manageable rules on these non-car EVs. So, your options are broad, which may or may not be a problem! Thanks.

Well as his channel isn't focused around his family but is focused about the car wouldn't that be a little odd, you also can't assume that he's not massively missing his family because he hasn't made a video about it, as a dad of two of a similar age I miss them after just a day away on business.
