I can’t talk about everything because of ongoing relationships, but there are some things I can talk about. 1. Roughly 3-4 brigades or ~12,000 North Korean Special Forces troops may be training and preparing to enter the front lines. 2. They will likely be used as brigade-level replacements rather than one for one replacements due to language barriers. 3. It is likely that North Korean Special Forces will fight as well as to be expected from any country that has elite forces. They will likely have superior discipline, although their lack of combat experience may make them less effective. 4. If North Korea sends any regular troops, they may have extreme problems with physical fitness and training although their discipline may be better than expected. There was a period of time when I first joined the Army, in the 80's, where the U.S. had not been in a serious war for some time. But the Soviets continued to do their thing. They kept hardening their troops, their Spetznaz. Sure, my brother landed in an airplane with the 82nd in Grenada. Sure, we did Panama. Sure, I was on the DMZ in Korea, getting custom made suits and a guitar. Then we got some real combat and I learned what all the Viet Nam Vet NCOs had told me when I was a private. There is a massive difference between a peacetime Army and Combat. So the mere fact that NOKO troops are going to Ukraine doesn't seem to me to make a huge tactical difference. With all due respect, Ryan, your description of the North Koreans between 4:25 and 5:30 is probably exactly the opposite of the reality - please don't conflate belief with compliance. It's the educated elites in Pyongyang who know it's all a farce, but are compliant out of conserving their status, plus fear. And it's the poor masses who most likely believe all that "Kim has super powers" stuff. Remember in Orwell's "1984," the senior party member (OK, the guy played by Richard Burton in the movie) knew it was all a farce and just about control - and in fact, wrote a pretend subversive book about it to trap dissidents.

Either way, a mass is worth something and if a dude with decades of experience says "nothing good" can come out of this, then it just means you are coping in attempt to rationalize this new situation.

Excellent analysis as always, Ryan! I especially appreciate your point about food shortages often being a feature, not a bug, of authoritarian regimes, as hungry people are less able to protest. In Ancient Greece the Spartans had a totally distinct culture that was so alien to the rest of Greece that they themselves believed the descended from invaders who reached the sea and settled in place. While this produced incredible soldiers the Spartans were better known as negotiators in their own time because their government was incredibly reluctant to send their armies outside their borders. They had several reasons for that, one of which was that every time the soldiers went abroad and learned about cultures outside of Sparta they tended to go a little crazy. Worse, sometimes they’d come back with stories of interesting ideas that the foreigners employed in their own cultures. I’m much more interested in how these North Koreans reintegrate into North Korean society once they return home from their time at the front than in what they’ll be doing at the front. This might be the largest exposure to the outside world North Koreans have had since the Korean War with far less government oversight than at home or even in the labor camps they often get sent to in their Allies. I have a feeling that Kim wants at least some of his soldiers to gain actual combat experience and this is a risk worth taking but it’s an interesting development. Also curious to see how South Korea responds given they may well see a future where a veteran north korean army stares out at a well trained but inexperienced South Korean one.
