I sort of feel bad for Romania to be honest. They seem like some of the biggest fans of the EU, they try really hard to combat corruption etc. and then they're getting misrepresented by stupid stereotypes originating from political correctness and "media speak". It's really unfair. Most of the "They're criminals!" type stereotypes are all down to people conflating 'Romanian' and 'Roma' (Gypsy). Because everyone's *so* worried about just saying things directly these days, Roma gangs, beggars etc. are often just referred to as "Romanian gangs", "Romanian beggars" etc. which gives them the bad image. A lot of the Roma people around Europe do indeed have Romanian citizenship but it's not like they're remotely representative of the general Romanian population. If you meet a random Romanian guy here in Denmark, chances are he's here working or studying.. Just like if you meet a random Italian or whatever. If you meet a random (Romanian or not) Roma/Gypsy, chances are they're beggars and/or criminals. The same is the problem all over Europe. The issue seems to be that they *really* don't value education, they don't want to integrate due to a fear of losing their culture etc. so all they can really do in other countries *is* begging or being a criminal. They won't qualify for jobs in Denmark, Germany, England or whatever.. Usually stereotypes are different in different countries and regions. A Dane will be stereotyped/seen differently by Swedes, Irish, Spanish, American etc. people. That's how you can usually tell it's nothing but silly stereotypes. If they were indeed true, you'd expect them to be the same all over the place, you wouldn't expect such variance in stereotypes from place to place if they were remotely accurate. An example could be the whole "Asians can't drive." stereotype from the US (You see it in movies and shit). I've never heard that stereotype in Europe at all so chances are it's nothing but a dumb stereotype. If being Asian actually prevented you from driving, you'd see the stereotype everywhere that had any Asians and cars. You don't. Now compare that to stereotypes about Roma/Gypsies. They're identical all over the place because the same issues arise wherever they go. It's not just silly stereotypes made up because people arbitrarily decided to dislike a random group of people for no reason. They've been in Europe since before Columbus (re)discovered the Americas and they've never integrated and done well *anywhere*. The entire American culture was built up by various nationalities and cultures in less time. Also, they're originally from a region up north in India.. Look at how well other Indians are doing in other countries.. Indians integrate in less than a generation all over the place. To keep pretending that it's all down to racism or whatever is just ridiculous at this point. They clearly don't *want* to integrate anywhere. The least we (and our media especially) could do would be honest about it and stop calling them "Romanian beggars", "Romanian gangs" etc. and just call a spade a spade. It's like the whole "Asian gangs" nonsense in the UK. Everyone knows they're not talking about Korean gangs etc. but it's just an idiotic term used in an attempt to be "PC". Apparently it's perfectly fine lumping all Asians together in a box but not all Pakistanis, all Muslims or whatever.

I do agree with your views on the roma/gypsy group, having encountered them in many countries. However, there are some features among romanians other than roma that are so common as to validate a stereotype. One such trait is that they are very supportive of their family, but not people not connected to them through family. They go to great lengths to help their moms, uncles, cousins, brothers and sister, but anyone else are not important and can even be exploited. And yes, alot of romanians have a user mentality, especially towards foreigners. Also they tend to brag about their exploits and they have a mindset that they can do anything. While such ambition can be very helpful in many ways, it's not good when they give the impression of having much more experience or education about matters than they actually have. This in turn makes much of the work they do half done or shoddy. I have helped a number of romanians with application papers and look for jobs, and this has been a problem when it turns out they are not qualified for the work they insist they are, and employers have previous bad experiences in employing romanians. Now these traits don't go for everybody. And there are differences geographically. The traits mentioned above are most prevalent in the south, such as in Wallachia. Less so in the north such as Transylvania and Moldavia. Thiss has probably some roots in neighbouring countries and who has ruled there historicaly. The south are probably still influenced by being under Ottoman rule and sharing more with the peoples of the Balkans, such as Bulgaria and Albania. While the North was under hungarian/Habsburg or Soviet Rule and have been more influenced by east and west slavs. And as everywhere, people tend to be more inclusive in rural communities than in the cities. It is true that Romania is trying hard to combat corruption. However, the results so far have not been very good. Corruption is still rife in Romania, and that is really sad for the common people. They really deserve better having toppled Ceausescu.

In Mexico we don't hear so much about Romania. It's so far away from us. Inna the singer, though, showed us a bit where it is and the language. Still, it isn't enough. So, my opinion as a Mexican, Romanians are very nice people, beautiful girls and very humble as far as personality. Also, very workers and friendly. Maybe we can get along with them because of Latin ties despite of being too far away. Hopefully I go there one day. Salutari per România. ;-)

I learned my heritage on my maternal side was from Romania - and I traveled there in 2010 to volunteer during Christmas, 3 months after my marriage ended. That trip saved my life. It was a beautiful (very, very cold!) country side and the people were warm once they realized why this American from California was there in freezing winter! It's wonderful to hear that the real opinion of French people is actually other than we are told it is :) Thank you for sayin' that! :) You are very kind! Because you are from France, I would like to point out the fact that Romania's culture has been influenced by France, in terms of literature, laws and arhitecture etc. For example, between the two World Wars, Bucharest was called The Little Paris (Micul Paris), due to its resemblance with Paris. Not to forget that our languages are both Romance languages. So I think our countries have a lot in common :)

Well is was last summer in romania with my bmw r1200gsa motorbike . Was drving from norway to bucharest through variuos country . 3368km . And i havent really anything negative about romania. Ok the roads are really shit ;) Other than that Lovely people great landscapes rich on tradition and culture and of course awesome traditional food

nah bro , everyone is getting " education " and then leaving the country , no one stays here to build the country , our population is getting older and older while romanian kids get born in the west and don't get taught their mother language , our culture is dying , it's pretty sad ... the traditional friendly helpful romanian is also dying because of the low quality of life and what he gets taught by the new modern culture ( for example music about money hoes and bitches made in USA ) , the old fashioned friendly romanian existed because of a pure lifestyle in harmony with nature , this lifestyle was killed first by communism and now by the corporations and business world etc etc. we can talk for days , I hope for the best but I don't see it happening

I'm Hungarian (from Hungary) and I respect Romanians and Romanian things if They respect Me and Hungarian things! I know it is very hard for Hungarians and Romanians to respect each other but I hope more people will stop giving attention for the haters and focus on the friendly, respectful people only! Personally I'm confused sometimes too about what I feel about Romanians, but it takes too many energy to hate people... I know Romanians and Hungarians will always have some conflict and will always judge each other because of a few person... Hungary is still much more Romanian friendly than Romania Hungarian friendly because Romanians don't get attacked in Hungary for being Romanian, meanwhile Hungarians are attacked in Romania because they are Hungarian... Norbert Kolonics! How could a 3 millions country like Albania be the start of the 30 mil nation as Romania is? We understand your frustration but don't forget few details: 1. After the WW1 Habsburg empire disappeared(because they lost) and so Hungary itself reappeared on the European map after hundreds of years from Mohacs battle; 2. Transilvania became part of Romania because the inhabitants living there were mostly Romanians after so many centuries of crime and assimilation against them. Also don't miss the fact that the Allies won against the central powers and Romania paid a high price of blood for recovering the territory. 3. Other territories ex Habsburg are now independent countries (Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia etc) or they belong to: Italy, Austria, Romania, Hungary(don't forget here that Hungary has some land from Austria too). 4. Also be fair and thankful that you have a place in Europe now close to us. 5. How could you imagine a big Hungary could guvernate itself with 50% or less Hungarians? Both of our countries have a demografic problem our days with this 1.5-1.7 per woman fertility. We can not produce the replacement rate for the generations coming... None of us can change the flow of the history but we have to read more and from many various sources for having a clear picture of what actually the reality is. What we can do instead is to be HUMANS! Our life is so short and we can't afford spending it in stupid negative things. I hope I was well understood and I was fair enough to do something positive. We the Romanians(Dacians) are the eldest nation in the region and this is proven by so many scientists. we could manage all the migrations in the last 2000 years +(including the Hungarian one) preserving ourselves. By the mercy of God hopefully we will carry on... God bless all the humanity. Peace be with all of us.

Greeting from Transylvania! When you asked which is the most beautiful part of our country and what you should visit (I think that might be what you asked), I'm surprised nobody said Danube Delta. While Transylvania is no doubt beautiful, especially the Bucegi Mountains, there is also the Danube Delta which is a great place to visit and is home to over 5000 (unique) species and is also a World Heritage Site.

When Romania was about to join the EU, France was blaming us for not being able to deal with the Roma problem. Then the Roma went to France, and they're helpless. It's a slow process, education is critical to smoothen the Roma issue, but it has to be done across EU.
