@foxx9555
@foxx9555 Жыл бұрын
Anti-EU sentiment is different thing than EU-criticism. Every nation is allowed to have opinions about EU policies. And sometimes EU policies are absolutely nuts! Like idea to completly wipe out gas engines from the market in about a decade - NUTS! Critique does not equal anti-EU statement. EU in many ways is going in the wrong direction, Brexit happened for a reason, remebmer EU pushed out very stong economy and military because bureaucrats from Brussels were to stubborn to find out a compromise with countries that want to keep their independence. Meloni won in Italy for a reason too. If we don't want EU to collapse, and another "exits" to happen, criticism and reforms are very needed, so Slovaks as a part of EU have full right to have opinions.

If it has been 30 years, then they are old people. It is quite normal for them to not want to put the effort into learning something new that they don't see a use for in their own lives. (I'm old, so I understand this.) In the US, a large percentage of first generation immigrants never learn English. But their children speak both English and the parent's language, and the grandchildren quite possibly never learn more than a few words of the grandparent's language. Don't worry about the old people speaking some ancient hereditary language. Look at their children and grandchildren and see what language they speak.

IDK, from my Ukrainian POV it is quite normal. When country multilingual and everyone around you knows common languages, it's only natural you answer in the language you feel most comfortable with. Only places where national language should be enforced are government institutions and schools. Rest is up for people to decide.
@inenfmk

@@PavelSikun in Ukraine Russia tried to convince you that you're just Russians yourselves, and the best way to do that is to make you speak their language and consume their culture. Because if a Ukrainian doesn't speak his language and doesn't know his culture but speaks Russian and knows Russian culture, what makes him different from Russians? Also, Russians tried to portray Ukrainian as a funny, made-up language of illiterate peasants. They tried to convince you that modern urban people speak Russian, and Ukrainian is for people from countryside. And it worked. Many Ukrainians are still uncomfortable with Ukrainian because they think it's a funny inferior language that'll make them look like they're from a village.
@PavelSikun
@PavelSikun Жыл бұрын
@@inenfmk doesn't change the fact that noticeable parts of my country speak Russian. It's not all about imperialism. You can't force language out of people. Ukrainian got much more popular lately and it is viewed as a language of culture and modernity, but it doesn't mean everyone will start speaking it. I speak Ukrainian to delivery services and when dealing with the government. In most of other cases I speak Russian. It doesn't mean I'm promoting Russian imperialism. Quite the opposite. Giving up the language in spite of Russia will allow them to claim Russian for themselves. Language is not theirs to take. Especially in case of Ukraine. We own as much of Russian language as does Moscovian regime. I'm from Chernihiv, historic people from my area are the architects of Moscovy to Russia rebranding. They were as much responsible for the creation of empire and it's action as were the people from Russia proper. Denying our legacy and shunning the past doesn't make us any better. I view it as a big mistake not capitalizing on our fluency and nativity of being Russian speakers. While I support Ukrainian being a sole state language, I also wish my country would've taken a different approach and instead tried to capitalize on being a successor to its legacy of cocreators of the empire and whatever culture it built. Trying to deny our legacy and playing contrarian only plays to Moscow's hand. We should stop equalizing language with culture. Any ideas can be expressed in any language. Best way to deny Russian imperial ambitions is to show them that language is a tool that can not be claimed. Invest in creation of media institutions that promote right ideas in as many languages as possible, including Russian. We shouldn't play contrarian and divide people on linguistic basis. Strength is in resilience and diversity. Culture only wins if it is spread by as many vectors as possible. If Ukraine/Moldova/Baltics/Kazakhstan were to sponsor Russian speaking media/institutions that promote proper values we'd not be helping Moscow, quite the opposite.
@inenfmk
@inenfmk Жыл бұрын
@@PavelSikun you absolutely can force language out of people. Russians literally did that to Ukrainians. Ukrainian did become more popular, but the thing is that it's been marginalized for decades of cruel and wicked policies. But now you're trying to popularize it through love and kindness. Beliefs and fears that were engrained through decades of cruelty can't be eradicated in a year of peaceful promotion, unfortunately. I don't think you should be so keen on keeping Russian. It has its cons: 1) it makes you culturally and mentally connected to Russia (many Ukrainians have horrible or intermediate Ukrainian at best and know zero Ukrainian culture, at the same time they're fluent in Russian and consume its movies, books, TV shows, etc. You can't deny that it makes you closer to Russians culturally and mentally) 2) it makes Russians think that you're also just Russians because you speak the same language, consume the same culture, and look similar or identical, depending on a person; they'll never leave you alone if they don't view you as foreigners, as a separate nation. Speaking of capitalizing, Russian is useless in this regard. Firstly, since everyone knows it, it's not valuable. Scarcity adds value. If you speak the language that everyone knows, you're just like everybody else. Secondly, it's not profitable unless you're a celebrity. If you're, say, a manager, you won't get a raise for knowing Russian in Ukraine because everyone knows it anyway. At the same time, if you go to work in Russia (which very few people will do after the war), you won't earn significantly more since Russia is poor too. So as you see, it's not profitable for an average person. But if you knew, say, German, it'd be beneficial since it's a prestigious language that very few Ukrainians know. You'd be able to get a raise for it or go to Germany and earn a lot more than you'd do in Ukraine. Russian is useless in Ukraine. It only harms you (see paragraph 2). It'd be much better for you if your people knew English instead. They'd consume Ukrainian culture and speak Ukrainian with each other, and when they go abroad or need to do something that can't be done in Ukrainian (e.g. read a book or watch a TV-show that wasn't translated to Ukrainian), they'd use English. And most movies that you watch, games that you play, or books that you read are either made in English (especially movies) or translated into it. No need for Russian. Exactly, you shouldn't divide people based on language. That's what Russians did to you. They made you speak two languages instead of one while discrediting the language of your country. And if all of you speak Ukrainian, you'll have fewer differences and have more in common, hence fewer reasons for arguments.

Moldova-Romania unification will not happen due to several reasons. 1. Romania already gives citizenship to Moldovan citizens, and many young people use that to live and work in the EU. 2. In order for Moldova to unite with Romania, Moldova needs to get into the EU first, that means it will have rule of law, a stable economy and higher living standards. It will also have access to EU funds. 3. If Moldova gets into the EU and NATO, it doesn't need Romania anymore. Romania has a very centralized, corrupt and inefficient economic system, controlled by Bucharest. Moldova will be able to manage themselves better and more efficiently, without sending money to Bucharest. Also Bucharest will be in charge of EU funds, which is bad because Romania has the lowest EU fund absorption rate, due to corruption and inefficiency. 4. Last time Moldova united with Romania, Moldovans weren't treated well by the Bucharest authorities, and they didn't forget that. So, for Moldova it's more advantageous to get into the EU and NATO, but not unite with Romania.

As for the corruption in ROmania....yes, it exists but it's far from what you have in Moldova and it will take you much more to get rid of that. As a citizen whose country was the last to join (Croatia), I hope Moldavia will follow soon. Croatia had a bumpy road, war of independence, occupied territory (similar to your situation), corrupt and criminal elites... we almost failed to join - but we are geographicaly close to rich countries and they wanted an extra buffer zone + we are nice holiday destination :) Just remember EU is not a magic wand to make all your wishes come true and your problems disappear. That aside it does bring more positive then negative and Moldavia does belong inside the EU.

@knobjockey76 You're very true, soft diplomacy IS easy when your country has so much natural beauty. But it's that old "gift and a curse" cliche! I greet all tourists that come to us, but their money is changing our mentality and not in a good way. The sheer greed that erupts with every summer season! The devastation of the coast so they can build ugly apartments on top of even uglier apartments. Tourism is giving a poor man a fish but never teaching him how to fish. Only industry, agriculture, science and culture can give a country real footing in the world. But this is not appealing to Croats, so they fixate on sports. Not to mention the levels of corruption in the government... However, the rest of the Balkans countries are even worse - some much worse. But also VERY beautiful, especially Bosnia and Montenegro! So, I agree with your *sigh* for Serbia. If they were to join EU, Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro would join by default. You got me on a tangent there a bit, sorry :)

I personally would be more than glad to welcome you to the EU and NATO, if you wish to join. We in the EU are far from being perfect, and there are some rules that aren't liked by all, but overall it's not that shabby, especially for the younger generations who have quite a lot of extra opportunities and rights. You gained a new subscriber. Good luck with your channel and all my best wishes, in the hope we can prevent some unwanted visitors from spreading over. Republic of Moldova is simply the eastern half of Romania's Moldova region (which is much larger), invaded by USSR in 1940, thus drawing Romania in WW2 on the Axis side. But the official language in Republic of Moldova is still Romanian! 82% of its population is Romanian and speaks Romanian as it's mother tongue. They study "ROMANIAN language and literature" and "History of ROMANIANS" as compulsory subjects in Moldovan schools. In fact, Principality of Moldova became in 1859 a founding member of Romania when it decided to unify with Wallachia, under a MOLDOVAN prince! About 50% of the population of Republic of Moldova have applied for and received Romanian citizenship, arguing that their forefathers have lost it unjustly during Soviet occupation. Not only does Republic of Moldova and Romania have the same flag, but they had the same anthem as well until 1994! Do Republic of Moldova is for Romania what East Germany was for West Germany...

The guy @3:20 has worked it out, that the conditions set by the Eu. for any country to be accepted into the EU. are conditions that will ensure that the judicial system is not influenced by the govt., that free and fair elections will be held at regular intervals, that there is minimal political or corperate influence that could inhibit the operation of a free press, I'm sure there's more but basically even if a country cannot meet all of these standards easily, any progress the country makes in these directions will benefit the ppl. greatly and even make the nation's economic structure more profitable and robust leading to better incomes for ppl. I hope Moldovans realize that joining NATO is not just about being protected by others, you are also expected to contribute to the protection of all NATO. aligned nations (about 2% of national GDP), being a member gives you an assurance that you can be the independent country you want to be within the EU. guidelines knowing that even as a comparatively weak military nation your security is guaranteed. 9:00 about a civilized world: there are better ways to deal with the problems in life that to kill someone, in the modern world we must strive to put laws and regulations into place that protect ppl. from harm and that if harm does come, they have the laws to extract a fair compensation from any perpetrator. Laws that prevent corporate/multi-national conglomerates from controlling the political system or the welfare of the ppl.

For several years I lived in the Netherlands in the same house as Moldovans. We worked in the same company, but in different departments. I can say that they are the same Europeans as Portuguese, Czechs, Swedes or Italians. Moldova is culturally part of Europe and should have been a member of the European Union and NATO a long time ago. Of course, there are many Russian colonists in Moldova who lived there during the existence of the Soviet Union and some of them still culturally belong to Russia. I hope that time and biology will do their thing and this part of Moldovan citizens will not have any influence on the future of Moldovans.

It's a mix of Stockholm syndrome after 50 years of living and having to be subservient to the Russians(i) and continuous Russian TV propaganda and brain washing since the 1990. With one Romanian TV exception, ProTV broadcasting there for many years after 90s, the strongest and most popular TV channels -all Chisinau hotels had them playing loud in their lobbies, were Russian TV channels from Moscow. Russian oligarchs have seriously invested in Moldova and bought most of Moldovan rich assets since the 1990 from the largest banks in Moldova (remember Sor?!) to real estate and land.

Moldovans speak Romanian just like Austrians speak German. They have a little accent, but it's the same language as us (Romanian guy here). And of course, there's still a lot of Russian-speaking people there (even people that only speak Russian) due to the Soviet past. Aiding Moldova to develop and renounce it's Soviet past will be a long and difficult task for the EU. But just like the EU helped Romania (and other ex-soviet countries) in the past, we'd be more than happy to take our turn in helping Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia follow the same path.

@@raducora7159 Thanks for the insight👍 I was wondering if Moldovian is a specific langage with Romanian roots; or, the same langage than Romanian. Moreover it sounds obvious to me than, despite the former soviet layer, the Moldovian people and Romanian people are seemingly 100 %latins culturally. Mannerism, behaviour, langage, culture, maybe food...i have interacted many times with Romanian people in my job and leisure and i feel many connections and similarities with the French culture....The vibe is very different towards the slavic culture wich is very exotic and strange for a French person ( + for a southern French, area connected with Italy for thousand years) , and sometimes as a result fascinating. About NATO: great military protection, but also quite a huge military investment. NATO is a mutual system, so to be member of NATO doesn't only mean you get a super defence in case anyone attacks you, but also that you have to *participate in the defence of others NATO members* , especially if they are under attack. It's quite an effort to comply with NATO standards of readiness. This preparation isn't given. *It requires investments just like it would for self-protection.*

I very much agree. Now, compared to being in a large alliance, for a large country to be alone about financing its own security it can be much more expensive and still maybe not adequate; for a small country it can be impossible. And whatever "price" (other than financial) could be connected to meeting any requirements would have to be weighted against similar possible costs for trying to achieve security all alone. I'm from a small country (Denmark). In the modern world and even with our quite solid economy we couldn't possible meet our own security needs if being alone and trying to do it all by ourselves. No matter what we would have needed to change in order to join NATO it wouldn't be nearly as much sacrifice as we would have to give for trying to meet our own security needs alone. Not that we would have to, as we were a founding member in 1949. ** It's simply much cheaper when many work together, each giving thier own part, and preferably what they're best at. Apart from having greater weight at a cheaper price, you also get the best from each member. ** And we unofficially took part in the kitchen table talks between Churchill and Roosevelt in the summer 1941 which resulted in the Atlantic Charter, forerunner for the United Nations, as well as some of the ideas later laying the foundations for NATO; so we couldn't have been involved much earlier (not more than a few hours earlier).

Of course it is true that countries will look after them selves first if the worst was to happen. This means nothing though. Most people will protect their own life and family first doesn't mean they can't also help others. NATO puts a lot effort to ensure militaries of members can operate together. Even if NATO as a whole would ever start showing cracks - you'd still have a lot of allies left from within the block. And thus far no one ever had invaded a country that is part of NATO alliance - thus I believe thus far the block does the job it's been designed to do. If not NATO it's unlikely that baltic countries would been even able to join EU because national security is on of EU's entry requirements and without NATO they simply wouldn't have had been able to secure against russian invasion on their own. And same situation I believe is with Moldova. Alternative to NATO would only be to organize some sort of east-europe aliance against the russian invasion but I don't see this happening any time soon and considering that nobody has nukes in east europe except for russia not sure if such alianse could ever be established.

How is ANYTHING you said relevant to the REUNIFICATION of Moldova and Romania? Or is this another "lenin created the romanian people" from the ruscist philosophy class? The formation of nation states happened throughout Europe for NATURAL REASONS and the evolution of NATION STATES as a principle. If you think "somebody" helped doing that, you might be a nazi, who believes nations are created by "super leaders in super states" (as rascist nazi state STILL exists today).

@@spiderone4 Romania was a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire. In 1877 , during the Russo-Turkish war, Romania allied with the russians so they can gain their independence from the turks. So Romania helped russia in the war and russia didn't had any intentions to "liberate" Romania because they had they own reasons for starting the war. (get back the territories they lost in the Crimean war.) Romanians were not the only ones that joined the russians then....Serbia, Montenegro and Bulgaria did the same and their goal was the same...independence. So, in fact, russia fought for getting territories and influence from the ottomans and the rest of the nations fought for their independence.

Nice to hear people speaking clean Romanian close to Iași-Suceava dialect. It is a no-brainer that Moldova should join the EU and maybe even Romania (at least as federation). And of course NATO. The indecisiveness of some answers is an evidence of some Russian influence, that I hope to dwindle over time.

As an American, it makes sense to me that Moldova would join the EU to build up its economy. But I really can't see Moldova being a full member of NATO any time soon. Perhaps in 10 -15 years, but I think that Moldova would have to do a lot of work to make that happen. NATO is not a promise of free protection to any country that desires it. Moldova has to step up in a very big way to build a considerably larger, modern, professional military. Currently, Moldova spends only about .41% of its GDP on the military. In contrast, Finland (which is currently applying for full NATO membership) spends about 2.03% of GDP (nearly 5X in percentage) on the military. NATO membership requires an expenditure of at least 2% of GDP on the member countries' military. Some countries currently fall short of this, but it is still a requirement. As a comparison, the US spends about 3.4% of GDP on its military. Finland has a population of a little more that 2X that of Moldova. Yet the GDP of Finland is nearly 22X that of Moldova. Moldova has a rather small military as compared to Finland. Moldova's military is rather outdated, relying on a lot of Soviet-era equipment, as compared to Finland's military, which is a quite modern, sophisticated, and professional force. In terms of military capability, Finland adds substantially to NATO forces, while Moldova currently does not. I hope that Moldova will expand its economy and greatly improve its military over the next decade or so. Eventually, they may be able to get full membership in NATO. But currently, I don't think that Modovans can expect US soldiers and other NATO forces to rush into their country and to potentially/likely lose their lives to protect Muldova from Russia when Modovans don't appear to be taking their own military capability very seriously. There are ups and downs to such a move. Though I'd like to ask the young girl sitting. If war came to your door, wouldn't you want someone to have your back and fight for you when you need help? Because if they don't join and war does reach them, they are just flat out screwed. Their only option would likely be submit to whatever or suffer heavy loss; then submit.
