Go wherever you can afford and find clothes that is simple and modest. Ask yourself, if I were invited to a special occasion, would I wear jeans and a t-shirt? There is nothing immodest about these types of casual clothes but the people who invited you might be offended that you didn’t even try. My cousin buys all of her wedding guest outfits at Ross. Sometimes they have nice formal wear for less than $20. I don’t know if you’ve been married or not, but when I got married, two wealthy relatives showed up in jeans. I can only assume that something happened to whatever they were planning on wearing the morning of and they didn’t have time to wear something else. And not even nice ones. The girls push the limits sometimes in their dress, but I thought this was REALLY pushing it. And one of the girls had shorts that were way too short. I was a little exasperated with the parents for letting them come like this. And at their casual wear as well. At the end of mass, I go up to the family for the usual hugs. The dad tells me how they had been up at their cabin, and there was a horrible storm, the power went out, this and this and that happened, and they barely had time to get to church, with no time to go home and even change. 😳 How many times, before I learn not to judge people? I'd recommend watching a few videos on youtube about them as they are a little different from the Novus Ordo mass that you would normally attend. (Communion on the tongue, everything is in Latin except the homily, there's incense, sprinkling of holy water, etc.) TLM masses are really quite lovely and very reverent. If there is one near you, you should really consider trying to attend, especially if you miss the old rite.

Hi. Several years ago I went to an evening Christmas Eve mass and the last one of the day for our home church. I say home church because our priest had three other out of town parishes to minister to and the Christmas morning masses would be in two of those towns. My husband had to work late at the water department 45 miles away. By the time he got to town, he knew he would miss mass if he went home to change so he came in wearing his job uniform. I was so happy to see that he had made it but I noticed that he didn't go to communion. I asked him afterwards why he hadn't. He said, "Didn't you hear the people behind us? They said that only an uncaring moron would come to church dressed so crappy." My husband was far too embarrassed to go to communion after hearing that. I don't believe that our Lord cared that he was wearing a work uniform which wasn't even that dirty. What meant the most to our Lord is the my husband wanted to be there despite the work and clothing circumstances.

My background as a lifelong Protestant with Biblical studies around the tabernacle and [essentially] liturgy has clicked in a new way seeing the Mass and the Eucharist. I’m currently a catechumen who intends to become Catholic within the year. Anyway, the new eyes I see the Mass and the Eucharist with is leaving me with more of a sense of reverence. What I’ve studied about before is here on earth in the Mass and the Eucharist, right in front of me and not in a distant time and location. With these things has come the increased desire to dress nicer at Mass, something better than what I consider every day wear outside of work dress code. I’m getting dressed to serve as a priest together with those ordained in Holy Orders. That changes my attitude in actions, in attitude and how I desire to dress at Mass. It has also been changing how I want to dress in every day life, carrying God with me into the world. I want to wear dresses, nice ones that cover my shoulders, décolletage (chest and bosom area), back, down to my knees, and non-bodycon unless I have other clothing items that help with the modesty like leggings, undershirts, overshirts, and cardigan-like items. Such clothing items that can meet all of those criteria are difficult in the US. This leads to specialty stores or vendors and really digging out there or even getting custom clothes made by a tailor who can do it. But I’ll work with what I got and improve my wardrobe as I can over time.

Inherit has some lovely stuff. Expensive but lovely. They also have frequent sales and discounts. They have some very nice high necked camisoles that are fabulous for wearing under dresses that would otherwise be too low cut. I'm with you on the leggings, they rock as an alternative to regular pantyhose or tights. I never got the hang of tights/pantyhose, I'd always put my thumb through them or snag them on something. I just really despise pantyhose & tights, waste of money those are lol.

This is a beautiful video. I've really been trying to embrace showing up in my Sunday best recently. For me, I find that trying to find as many ways to worship God through mundane actions as possible helps me keep my eyes on Him. It reminds me that He is my foundation, and should be at the heart of everything I do. I'm disabled, and sometimes I struggle to take care of myself or make decisions, but putting the extra effort in to make sure I've got a nice outfit clean and have properly gotten ready feels like a good sacrifice I can offer up, a way I can try to give God my best even if I don't have the ability to do so any other day of the week for myself. That point about also giving Him your worst is great too, because we definitely can't really do much about that on our own. As much as I'm trying to gather the effort to give Him my best, I'm also trying to get up the courage to give Him my worst and just keep showing up with whatever it is I have, because He cares most that I'm simply there.

Father Schmitz, I want to thank God for placing you in the position that you have, to heal prior damage and unite people by providing a better perspective on many topics, such as this. I have the same understanding as you, on this topic and have never been able to convey it as wonderfully as you do. Just as in Jesus's time with the Apostles, people selected portions of the truth to increase their worth and or decrease the worth of others. How to dress at mass is one of the simple examples of this with good priests and bad priests, good parishioners and bad parishioners fighting over the details instead of teaching and learning the meaning and allowing it to dictate the details and also the understanding of why the details may be acceptable depending on their heart. You've unlocked this topic from both sides and should make both sides happy. In the end, it's always about going deeper and not remaining on the surface. And in that respect, you could add, that while God always meets you where you are and loves you as you are, He always wants you to improve and become more than you are, in effect, to be more like Him. It is both and, not one or the other. It is adding together and not dividing. Did I say that ok? Ps I love saying the rosary with you on you tube every morning on my way to work. Oops, not doing it reverent on my knees in my prayer room. Lol. God Bless you.

I love this video. I work weekends a lot and there are times where I have to floor it out of the parking lot to make it to mass 3 blocks away to show up on time in my work clothes with not even a minute to spare. I don’t feel any shame because I’m there to celebrate the mass and be witness to the sacrifice. Under normal circumstances I will wear jeans with a nice flannel as I live in an under-40 urban neighborhood while some show up in sports jerseys.

A few thoughts: Firstly, I agree with you, Fr. Mike, that the external can convey the inner condition of the heart. However, in some societies (e.g. traditionally catholic) I've seen this take a turn towards a fashion show (but probably this is the question of people's individual responsibility). Secondly, in a world, where there is so much acceptance for ugliness and where it is assumed that beauty is relative and in fact does not exist, I would say, that taking care of the external beauty is a form of testimony, that it matters. Thirdly, what is beautiful is not necessarily good, but good is always beautiful. Oh! And today I'm on day 109 with the Bible in a Year and the reading was about Sammuel going to Jesse and his sons! And on the same day I'm listening to this podcast, where Fr. Mike mentions it. How crazy is that!
@joane24Ай бұрын
That's also what is included in what Fr Mike said about the external conveying the internal - that what you later said that the attire is a testimony. These two points are in accordance with each other, there's no contradiction here.

I live in a rural area, so often when assisting at daily Mass many of us might be on our way to work or to some other endeavor which makes “best” dress difficult. (We drive great distances). But bare shoulders and knees on the altar disturb me.

Everyone else was dressed in nice elegant summer dresses, dress shoes and all. And I was sitting next to a religious sister in a habit. Father Mike, as usual, beautifully shows us both sides of a potentially thorny issue and gives us the tools to discern our response. I believe it comes down to what we want to convey from our hearts. As Father Mike says, if we use our external appearance to cover our internal “messiness” we are approaching it in the wrong spirit. Conversely, if our hearts are in a holy state, (understanding that we are a fallen people), we should not cover that with something less than a neat and tidy appearance. Showing up at Mass offering the best we have, internally and exteriorly, in my opinion, is what we need to strive for. Blessings to all!

What a great topic, Fr. Mike! I heard a priest once say to dress for Mass as you would if you were going to have an audience with a king: respectfully and tastefully. A different priest also said there is a happy middle ground between immodesty and "frumpy" as in both of those extremes we can draw a lot of attention to ourselves. If we are trying to have our focus on Jesus, our clothes can reflect that. Something tasteful and respectful to the best of our ability. Not to draw unnecessary attention to ourselves with our clothes, but to keep the focus on our King to the best of our ability. Reading The Bible in a Year has really changed what my idea of modesty is, that it begins in the heart and soul and then your clothes and taste come to reflect that. I would highly recommend searching for the best way to dress in scripture, in prayer, and by the example of the saints and other holy people you may know. God can work such miracles in the heart if we allow Him to. ♡

My family members are walking around scratching their heads saying, “what does that mean, what is he trying to say?” My answer. Sunday BEST is not what I aspire to, but modesty. Wearing modest clothing is extremely important. Even our Lady says so. God loves us and accepts us as we are; However, this subject is a lot like head covering. Once we are in the church and not new anymore, we begin to live out our Christian journey, reading scripture, and following holy protocol presented in sacred scripture, or by revelation of Our Ladies apparitions, matters where the church is silent on.
