If you have had a stroke and you come through a stroke service, your therapy team, in conjunction with the medical team will decide whether you need immediate rehabilitation. Your rehabilitation starts on day one, so on the hyper acute stroke unit, you will be seen by an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a speech therapist and maybe even a psychologist if there's problems with memory. You may then be moved to an acute stroke unit and that may be within the same hospital but often it's in another hospital near your locality. The reason for that is that we want to put you in your locality so you can engage
with services in your community including the community rehabilitation services. You will be continuing to get therapy every day and if necessary, you'll be moved to a community rehabilitation hospital - a hospital type environment but with less medical input.
In therapy, we focus on your disability and how do we get you back home and functioning. You may need help in getting back to work and there are vocational rehab services which we offer at Queen Square.
Once you go back home, there are community rehabilitation services in the early stage who offer therapy in the form of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language and therapy should be tailored to your disability.
