Thank your so much. I live in sub-tropical Australia and during our recent Summer, I found several projects where my glued papers had detached. I had used good quality glues. As they had been perfectly adhered during the cooler months, the humidity was the only thing that I could think would be a factor. Lesson (re)learnt - take the local climate into account when considering my art materials and practice. 😏

I had no idea that cellulose glue had those properties. I must get some and try it with my next watercolour collage! BTW, those trees are amazing!!!

Yes, once you start thinking about the properties of all the mediums, you can make more informed decisions about techniques. Glad it is helpful, and again sooo many thanks for watching. I wouldn't have a channel without my viewers. Thank you for participating X, and see you again X😀😊

Hi Louise. Thanks for your very informative videos and showing your wonderful work 😊🥀 I like to do mixed media art and use a lot of collage. But unfortunately I am getting sick from using acrylic mediums as glue. So I wonder if I can use wall paper paste (methyl cellulose) instead for paper collage? I am a little worried about it yellowing over time. Do you know about this? Also what about fungi if there is not preservatives in the cellulose glue? And lastly can you varnish on top of the collage made with cellulose glue? Your help with these questions will be much appreciated 😊 Nina

Hi Nina Glad you like the videos, and many thanks for watching X. Methycellulose glue is used as archival glue by bookbinders. It won't go mouldy as long as it is kept dry. You can use the acrylic varnishes on top of the cellulose. I will also use the branded acrylic mediums as they will be archival. 😀 Good luck with it all XX

@@LouiseJannetta Thank you so much for your valuable answer. I really appreciate this😀🥀. I will go ahead with the methyl cellulose glue then. It Will be so good to make art and not getting sick from it.🥀

Interesting video. Am I right in thinking that wheat paste is a good choice for holey paper or thready paper etc, so as to get a colour absorbant surface that isn't stiff or brittle? I'm finding cellulose paste darned hard to get hold of, (unless I could substitute wallpaper paste???) however I've managed to get some methyl cellulose, although not cheap. I'd like to try the wheat paste unless it produces a brittle result. So I'll hope to hear from you.

Hi again Fran. Wheat paste is also a good glue for this process when you want the papers to remain absorbent and to take pigment well. The plastic-based glues that are not soluble once dry will, of course, take acrylics well, but it is painting onto a sealed surface, and so doesn't respond to the papers and threads, the materials themselves so well.😀

And hi again - I am sorry if I didn't clarify that by cellulose glue, I mean Methyl Cellulose glue. I purchased it from a bookbinder supplier in Britain. I think craft suppliers also sell it. Wallpaper paste is also suitable for this process, and I am sure its archival properties are suitable. Still, it is not made for artwork, so there is very little written about the chemicals added, and I couldn't be sure of wallpaper paste's archival qualities. But for work that is more experimental and trying out a process its an excellent alternative.😀 I hope all this helps. Many thanks for watching my channel, and best of luck with all your creative endeavours. All the very best Louise

Oh that's great. I already have some dry powder wallpaper paste, hanging around doing nothing, a nice cheap source! I.e. already bought, so almost free! I was also wondering about 'Nori paste' - isn't 'Nori' seaweed? Would that work? It kept coming up in my searches. Thank-you so much for your replies.

Hello I’m getting ready to glue pieces of embroidered fabrics to a canvas on top of thick paper. What glue do you recommend? I bought the Golden High Solid gel gloss. Would that work?
@LouiseJannetta9 ай бұрын
Hi an acrylic medium will work. I reckon the one you have bought would work well. It has the density to fill any gaps and will have good adhesive strength. However, I have never tried this method. Good luck and pretty sure it will work x

Hello Louise. So if I use methyl cellulose glue it will reactivate when wet and allow absorption into it and the substrate/material beyond it, say with acrylic paints. I assume that when I add acrylic based paints or mediums, although they will be absorbed to a degree, they will then lock-in the methyl cellulose glue and it will no longer be subject to environmental conditions like humidity and damp etc. is that about right?
@LouiseJannetta9 ай бұрын
Hi Ger, methylcellulose is an archival glue used in book binding. It is a starch-based glue and can be re-dissolved, allowing the project to be renovated if necessary. The binder in the acrylic will undoubtedly fix the methylcellulose so that it is no longer resoluble. However, I have not researched the ongoing dynamics of these mediums. I am not sure how they would respond to damp conditions. There are always issues to consider, and humid conditions will not suit paper or fabric. The acrylic also seals the substrate, and it is no longer absorbent. It really depends on the results that you wish to achieve. I hope this helps, all the best, Louise.😀

Is the Elmers glue which is a PVA glue safe for artworks that you wish to conserve and will it yellow the paper?
