Great Episode as always. I like when Dr. Thompson says he asks new patients about insomnia. I think this could be the primary factor in my mild tinnitus. Throughout this whole pandemic and a little bit even before I don't sleep well. Typically I wake up after 4 to 4 1/2 hours of sleep usually only lightly falling back to sleep intermittently. This goes on day after day. Sometimes I get short cat naps waiting in between calls in the limo. I have normal very mild low frequency hearing loss typical for my age. No hearing aids required. My Dad is 97 and has no hearing loss or at least I know he wears no hearing aids.

A lot of great work...but far too many are working on developing tinnitus remedies. As I understand the research, their tinnitus is reduced by a small shock before an audio pulse in those with damaged auditory systems. For those without damage, the shock occurs AFTER the audio tone. I developed my own bimodal stimulation device, and have been using it for 3 years, with mixed results. My left ear ringing is virtually gone, but my right ear is still an issue. I think I recall one researcher saying that treating one side causes positive effects on the other side... but it didn't with me. I will say that bimodal stimulation has significantly improved my life.

It honestly sounds like he's trying to explain his way out of producing legit clinical study data by muddying the waters of what can/can't be measured. I really hope this product works but let's stop playing games like this... I agree re the personal optimization - its funny because he was already doing this in his lab and in joining Lenire *regressed* to a generalized approach.

The title of this video is misleading. Hubert Lim is listed as Chief Science Officer for Lenire. It's not much of a review if the person works for the company. I'm not saying the guy isn't trying to do good work but be upfront about things like this.
@qyhh

@@georgec6422 Totally agreed! This should have been mentionned right off the bat. This doesn't make me want to watch the video. (even though I already went to Neuromod for an appointment in early 2020, so I was interested.) I randomly watched 15 minutes of one of his livestream on youtube, and I legit asked about neuromodulation, he said "it was a hot topic in 2015, but the searches didn't really continue much due to not-so-great results", or something along those lines. So yeah, this really doesn't make me wanna listen to the video, even though it might be good, idk.

I have been living with this condition for three decades. What I find particularly fascinating is that I can alter the sound or pitch of my tinnitus by applying gentle pressure to my head. Through conversations with others who also experience tinnitus, I have discovered that this is not a unique occurrence. Several years ago, I participated in a conference dedicated to tinnitus. When a member of the audience highlighted this phenomenon, the experts on stage seemed completely unaware, while many attendees resonated with the speaker's observations. Since that event, I have not encountered any explanations regarding this occurrence. What I can share with anyone interested is that if I place a hand beneath my chin and apply upward pressure while simultaneously exerting slight pressure on the top of my head, the sound or pitch doesn't alter. This observation may suggest that the issue originates from the cranial nerves to the spinal cord. I believe this is an area that warrants further investigation. I would be eager to hear from others who have noticed similar experiences.

Great channel Ben, I just discovered it. I've had loud high pitched tinnitus and hyperacusis for about 9 years now. Both came with a sudden onset. I just woke up one morning with both T & H. Hearing tests came out normal according to age etc. No injury. I've always wondered why urinating affects my T levels, perhaps it has an affect on some pressure somewhere. Hard to say. Another thing that reduces symptoms is alcohol. That's pretty much all that really works. Urination and alcohol. What a weird combo. Anyways, thanks for sharing knowledge and content on tinnitus. My personal take is that neurology will find the answer to this. It's brain damage.

@@stephanm.2831 Well, I took codeine but I also ate a hamburger. What I'm trying to say is that T can be caused by a million things. Just reading about all the substances that may cause T is hopeless cause it's pretty much everything and anything. All I know is what can give some relief as mentioned in my post. My personal take on this is that it's brain damage. I hope science will focus on the neurology in this. I don't see that the ear is connected to either T or H. The ear is just preforming the orders of the brain.

I'm hoping that there is some degree of recovery still going on.

I have Tinnitus and let me tell you it can be pretty difficult task to completely cure it because tinnitus could be due to a lot of unknown underlying factors… but generalizing the possible cure: you have to actually work at neuron level but understanding brain is very very difficult. You have to give some injections which stop the hyperactivity/electric activity or possible blood clots or dead cells in the brain…

There is nothing Pavlovian about tinnitus and the concept of it being linked to the hippocalmus is only a model. A more realistic model shown by Brazilian workers is that it is a disruption of the facia and is linked to the autonomous nervous system which is why stress makes it worse through the effect of cortisol.

As a Tinnitus patient myself I'm not really convinced that this treatment can help me at all. If you would be listening to a concert and tell the soundmaster that a certain sound is disturbing, and that it affects the quality of the music, the soundmaster would decrease that sound using his equilizer. Your treatment is increasing all the other sounds to relatively decrease the tinnitus sound. The soundmaster would tell you that increasing sensitivity on other Hz, will affect the soundexperience negatively. We Tinnitus patients want to experience silence, not become sensitive to other sounds. This is not a solution...

Thank you Dr. Lim and Dr. Ben. Now I understand the concept of this device. I am curious about the discussion about having to generalize the device. Does this mean necessarily there is some effectiveness lost because it has to be a device that could help a large population, versus a device that would only help a few people? Or are you helping more people at the expense of a few? Do I understand that correctly?

He says improvement might take place within 6 weeks. But if not… does it make sense to continue? Might the effect also can happen after the 6 weeks? What about 3-6 months treatment?

Ok I have tried for 4 months lenire. Nothing Zero nada change in Tinnitus. This treatment doesn’t work Mr. Lim

It’s possible that the effect can happen after six weeks; however from my understanding the majority of successful outcomes should occur within six weeks of using Lenire.

This is a wonderful video. One concern, if we make certain frequencies more strong as a way to ignore the Tinnitus frequencies, what if those eventually become the Tinnitus sound, and now theyre strong. For those of us with Hyperacusis, I don't think we particularly want ANY sounds to be amplified. Are all the bimodal models doing this? Amplifying "other" frequencies?

Apparently Susan shores work attempts to shut down the actual cells causing tinnitus. If I remember correctly they are generated in the dorsal cochlear nucleus.

Got mine in 2019, after waking up from a nap... I was never the same... no hearing loss, veriried TMJ, wore mouth guard for 10 months, nothing worked... MRI done, no hearing loss by 2 different clinics... nobody can figure out... I do sleep late, work for hours as an engineer ...

Same. I woke up with high pitched loud T and what I later learned was named hyperacusis. Both of these things with sudden onset. Been trough all the hearing checks, wore a white noise generator on both ears for 1 years straight, didn't do anything for me. My T loudness can be affected by jaw movements. It's there all the time. Only way to reduce it is alcohol but that's not a long term medication in any way of course, I just notice that being drunk reduces T and H. I've had it for about 9 years now.

I have always been hyper-sensitive to loud noise (restaurants especially), concerts, loud voices (my husband), loud tv (again my husband). I always have ear plugs with me and can not attend concerts without them. Do you think this hyper sensitivity to loud noise caused this tinnitus? Also have had TMJ. I corrected my teeth and wear a night guard now so no longer have TMJ pain. Could this have caused this tinni have?

Been watching your channel for the last couple months. I’d like to reach out and work with you via tele health. I have unilateral tinnitus in my left ear it developed after a road trip into the mountains. I was recently accepted into the oto-313 program here in Florida but I did not go through with the injection for fear of it worsening my tinnitus. I don’t what else to do.
