QOTD: I made the mistake when I was younger and didn’t research having whites tree frogs, they didn’t get heat or light, though they survived for years until I had to sell them, I would never do that again, no warmth, no uv, no enrichment, I’m ashamed, but learned my lesson

QotD: As a teenager, I bought a bearded dragon and didn't have a UVB. I didn't know about it until he started developing MBD symptoms and then my mom wouldn't buy me a $15 light bulb...I thought I could get around it by taking him outside in the sun everyday. I did save up money and got him one within a month or 2. This is a big part of why I so badly want to spread information about proper care, and continue to learn and better my own husbandry.

Huge comment, here. In the wild, these animals are afraid of being eaten just as much as they are in captivity. Showing them that the worst thing you're going to do is treat their wounds and set them free in a really nice habitat that they feel safe in really does provide a metaphorical floor to the spiraling fear reactions they have. They know that it's not going to be as bad as they imagine in their little brains that say "Oh no! I'm being eaten!" We worry about traumatizing animals and losing trust, but when these animals are young is really the time to learn how to share space and interact. Dayyan is doing a great job of giving the space they need to come to him on their terms. That's a few steps down the line in setting these animal's expectations. We have to acknowledge that they aren't humans and the things they think about are different. You never really know what it is that you do that might offend them. Something to think about is never eat in front of your monitor lizards when they are hungry. I found my buddy's adult black dragon, Tyco, a melanistic water monitor, now absolutely hates his girlfriend because he never told her not to do that. You really have to acknowledge that these animals are smart, for an animal, and we have to be the ones to predict their behavior. It's a learning process and sometimes we learn that the room for error is really smaller than we want it to be.

I used to worry that treating a sick leg would damage the bond/trust we’d built but over the years I’ve discovered it’s quite the opposite. After caring and nursing any of my reptiles needing medical attention they have actually trusted me more after treatment. I also go to Campus Estates. Love them. They removed an abscess off my SD nose and treated a yellow tail cribo that I purchased that came with and RI and parasites.

I appreciate how you acknowledge the time, effort, and money involved in keeping exotics. This is a reason I currently only keep tarantulas, but once I'm more settled I'll be plenty knowledgeable about stepping up. I picked up a tarantula sling that was hardly the size of the fruit flies I was feeding it as an add-on freebie for my other T purchase at an expo. I wasn't expecting it to be so small, but it seemed to be doing well - building tunnels, eating well, and even molting. It survived for a few months but then stopped eating and passed. Obviously I wasn't able to fix that issue but it really drove home the delicate nature of keeping any sort of exotic pet. That loss has stuck with me

I used to keep fancy goldfish, so the thing people don't know about goldfish is they can get BIG and OLD and I had raised one of my fish from 1 inch to a 10 inch long, 4 year old. I sadly got sick, as in, in the hospital every day for a week to get IV antibiotics, sick and this fish, that I'd raised and saved through 1 case of sepsis as a baby couldn't make the 1 week with no cleans due to her weakened immune system. Don't be afraid to ask for help. That's my advice, because if I'd have found help to take that one cleaning, my girl would have probably been fine. I got an infection and so did she.

Aww I'm so sorry 🥺 Goldfish are so sweet. Mine eat from my hand sometime. I've grown them out since 1989. I was 5. And yes... they absolutely get HUGE... need large tanks... produce alot of waste and need really good filtration. Again I am sorry you lost her💔 We have lost some too, honey. It happens.

Totally agree. Goldfish are advertised as easy beginner fish but this is far faaaaar from the truth especially when considering fancy goldfish who are so overbred and lacking good health often. They are a lot of work, can grow very large and live a long time.. I had some goldfish for over a decade. They need large tanks, heavy filtration and I did 50% water changes WEEKLY. There are way easier and hardier fish for beginners that’s for sure lol

I have a 4 yr old indoor outdoor cat. He shares a birthday with my teenage son so this cat is very important & loved by all, well he started limping, noticed it on my bday. I’ve seen this happened with cats soo often so I decided to wait a day or two. See if he starts using the paw again. Well I will never do that again. Even though I inspected the injury and didn’t see any wounds I later learned when taking him to the vet(3 days later) 😞 that he was more than likely in a throw down fight where he essentially broke a toe. And had a wound. Luckily he is fine with minor surgery and loads of antibiotics. But his toe will always look larger. And the vet informed me that while it’s fine now that just like in humans that over time he might have a little swelling or discomfort but that he will ultimately be okay. Never again will I wait. Never. I felt terrible. He went days with infection. And I just left him thinking it was a minor injury...

It feels horrible having a pet falling ill/having injury even tho you seemingly did everything right. But that what happens. And as long as you try to push through that and take care of that pet so it will ne healthy again everything will be alright. Bad stuff happens it can be out of our control. I'm glad that basil is getting better and that handling is making progress!

Awesome learning video and so well done! When a pet freaks out we get anxious too and it's easy to back off too much. So calm forced handling is necessary to a degree just to make sure they're ok and nip any issues in the bud. Especially since things can go downhill so quickly. With any pet, a regular easy going over is so important to finding hidden issues. Fantastic lesson! Thank you!

I did have three green anoles, which were living in a custom enclosure for a long time, over a year at that point. Never had trouble shedding until one day one of the females had a swollen eye. So I called the vet, but there is only one vet here with reptile experience and she had the day off. So next day I come in and I'm told the anole had a shed stuck in her eye which had to be removed. But...... the next day was weekend so I had to wait. Eventually FIVE days after I noticed something was wrong she finally got operated and she died one day later "because we were to late". I know I could not have helped, but I can't help but think that if the vet had made my anole a slightly higher priority she could have survived, and I wouldn't have spend 130 euros on a dead anole.

Coconut oil has been my saving grace with my red iguana. Granted she gets handled nearly daily and three years into this, she also knows that after baths she'll be on the counter and getting a oil rub down. I used to do this as she is in a bioactive enclosure and ended up with mites.. I dunno how as she's my sole reptile.. but regardless. I used coconut oil and bathing (as well as ripping the enclosure apart and cleaning before resetting it) to get rid of the mites. Helps reduce the chance of stuck shed or even fix the issues when used weekly in her case. (can't say it'd help in all cases but it has for her). She has a toe that was broken before I got her. So I have to keep that toe trimmed and keep an eye on the shed where it sits at an odd angle. (yes my vet for her knows, but it's not causing a issue and I've been managing it so they don't want to remove it if they don't have to). I do agree with what was said though.. I had to force handling a little with the iggy. Just health care and all. But she's a treat now as a 4ft cat tame reptile I can take outside and with some coaxing get a harness on to keep her enrichment up.

I have a guinea pig that someone was giving away because she thought she wanted to be a lone piggy. I kept her alone for almost 2 months before she seemed to be horribly depressed. She wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, wasn't coming out of her hide and wasn't cleaning herself. She's black and white and was turning yellow from just going potty on herself. I felt HORRIBLE! I finally realized she DIDN'T want to be alone, went and got another piggy and she IMMEDIATELY turned over a new leaf. After a nice bath and new bed ( it was so gross I want even going to try to clean it anymore) she was like a whole new piggy and took to our new girl right away. I felt awful for keeping her alone for 2 months, but it's been 2 years and they're still happily getting on each other's nerves and yelling at me together when they feel their hay or food levels aren't adequate 🤣 I'm just glad I figured out what was really wrong before she let herself waste away!

When I was a kid I had a little anole. It escaped the enclosure one day and I could not find it. Then it showed up all of the sudden. It was on the window sill dead! I was so sad and felt terrible. I guess the lesson is, make sure you have explored every and any way that an animal can escape a tank or enclosure. I’m pleased to say that I am not as irresponsible as I was back then. 20 plus years later I have a very happy and healthy beardy named Dagger.

I just found your channel and i am amazed at how great you are with your animals!!! Pretty angry youtube didn't show me your channel sooner and ive been adamantly watching reptile videos for nearly a year. That shows you how much channels aren't show in searches or recommendations. For the question i want to asy i boame myself for everything that goes wrong with my beardies. Its slim and minimal but considering i am responsible for them as soon as i bring them home it is indeed my fault. Thankfully nothing needing a vet yet. But i dont look at anyone in bad light for something like what happened to basil because he was shy and cant tell you that his toes hurt. There are just some things that will happen even with the best care possible. And we are human caring for animals so mistakes are bound to happen. As long as we learn from it and do better next time things will be peachy keen.

Thank you very much for the kind words of encouragement! That is a very good question! For the red eyed crocodile skinks, yes, that is why. For Basil, it’s because of his sharp nails! It’s one thing to have a tree monitor willing climb on you (still can scratch you) but to have one resist being held while you apply ointment, they will tear your skin scratching to get away and he’s not even half grown 😅! Sometimes the gloves tear from him pulling to come look of my gentle grip but at least most of the time my skin is safe haha. Thanks for watching!

I kept my beardie happy and healthy for years he was 14 when I was 12 so I didn't quite grasp that his time had come when I saw him unable to get up I ran to my mom crying holding him and placed him on her. Kirby couldn't even lift his head. We rushed to emergency pet hospitals but the first two wouldn't treat reptiles so when we finally found one he was very weak. I blamed myself for along time. I’m at a loss, vet visit coming up for my lil man! Was it just the daily gel application that got that shed off? His doesn’t moisten properly in a bath, there’s nothing I can pull off, it’s just a tight ring of scale So grateful Basil is doing well again!

Well... my sin! Last year I bought 3.1 H. platyurus, just because they were sold ad "feeding geckos". I wanted a better life for them, so took them home, and wait for them to set, offering food every other day. No one ate except for a female that would take a roach now and then. At one point the male started shedding, and when I returned in the room, he was in the same exact position. He was gone, in two hours. Called the seller, asked the vet, but there was no right answer to our questions. Fast forward one week, the one that was eating was fine, she gained some weight too, the other two still weren't eating. In the weekend, one passed away in the night (found her on the ground) and one started shedding, and the nightmare was starting again. Vet told me to help her shed using a q-tip and come watered down camomile. She had about 3-4 layers of shed, and I totally cleaned her. After two hours, again, she was gone. Contacted the seller AGAIN, since he told me they were eating and shedding properly with him, they were fine since all of them were "breed at XYZ facility". Turned out XYZ was a importer of WC animals, but he was selling them after two months as CB. I had one gecko left at that point, ran a fecal exam that turned out negative, along with other tests, all resulting negative. I still have my last female, she laid (and ate 🙄) eggs, she's healthy and stunning, but we still haven't solved the mystery..

If he is not using a moist hide make sure he has a spot to soak in inside the enclosure. If he doesn't use that make sure you give him regular daily soaks. Use a q-tip to help remove soaked dead skin. Start at the ankle and slow rub towards the toes. Use your finger tips to get the last bits off the toes. Animal 1 Guy has great videos on this problem in his rescue lizards. Lizards who have lost toe nails and toes.

About handling, I have a snake and it's ill advised to handle a snake while it's feeding so taming with food is basically out of the question. The way I get around this is gently and carefully picking her up for about 10 minutes almost every day. The first week or so she did hiss, but she got used to it and now when I put my hand down in the enclosure she happily crawls onto it because she knows I'll walk her outside. Just some insight so you don't feel so bad about force handling. Happy he's doing better!

My favourite female leopard gecko had a fingertip cut off and two fingers broken, all in the back legs, as well as some small jaw problems, because the male I paired her with was enigma. Enigma leopard geckos have severe problems with balance and he could not balance well to mate with her, and so I believe he bit her because he couldn’t mate with her. I didn’t notice it, because she was stressed and hidden for many days. I couldn’t do anything afterwards anyway. I paired hair with another male the next year, which was much more normal and gentle. However, I keep her solitary now and don’t plan on breeding her, because she is very fragile and prone too extreme fasting during ovulation every year. Honestly, I didn’t like Basil so much. Although the facility you’ve got the animals from was exceptional, the temperament of this animal was worrying. I think that if we want to have a good relationship with our animals and a good image for our hobby, we must breed newcomer species to the hobby for temperament too. Unconsciously more or less this has been done for leopard geckos, bearded dragons, corn snakes and similar common species. My opinion may change if he tames down. But shouldn’t you breed Sabsi with a more tolerant male?

Hi, I like your videos about the tree monitors so much. I have learned a lot. I am about to get my own green tree monitor shortly and I have tried to study a lot about their care and husbandry before I buy own, given their sensitive nature. What I could not find out really is how often you should feed an adult per week and the in particular the quantity since they get fat quite easily. Any advice from your end? Some sources say that you should feed them twice per week, but what about the quantity? How many crickets or roaches per feeding? Appreciate your help!

I keep pet rats in addition to my tarantulas, leopard gecko, crested gecko and hedgehog. One thing I always feel bad about is somehow one of my rats injured his back and lost his life because of it. He was just shy of his first birthday. I kicked myself for months. I am still unsure of how it happened but now my rat cage has all kinds of falling fail safes. Rats have short life spans as it is so I really felt it was my fault his life was cut even shorter than what it should have been.

Sometimes we learn who loves us most when we are at our weakest. I think the same can be said for animals. 💖 Think of rescued dogs... there are none more loyal and grateful! I know reptiles aren’t the same as dogs, but I honestly believe we have much more to learn abt how they think and feel. Just my thoughts 💖

where do you get the cork boards you use as backing for some of your enclosures? im currently keeping a young tokay gecko in an 18x18x24 exo terra terrarium and am using a roll of cork that youd normally use in an office setting as the backing. I don't think that hell notice much of a different but it'll definitely look better.

Hey Dayyan! I got a baby blue tree monitor, just a month old! This is day 4, was wondering what you think the first step would be to taming him. He seems a little more reserved since the first day we brought him home, but he has eaten multiple crickets out of my hand. I picked him up once to clean the enclosure, and after a few seconds he closed his eyes and chilled. Any advice on step number one with a brand new baby aside from feeding?

Do you think he had a problem shedding because the humidity wasn't high enough? Tree monitors should have about 80% humidity from what I've read and heard.

Hey D for the past 4 years I did everything to insure my Bearded Dragon and she was living we best life . 1 day I had her outside and my neighbor called my name and I literally turned around for 30 seconds and when I turned around she ran off n ate a flower didn’t think anything of it and later on that night she started to act erratic and turned out it was a toxic flower... I still blame myself daily when I stare into an empty tank .. still blame myself n that flower bush doesn’t exist anymore

What do you put on the toes at 6:54? Did you say silvasorb gel? looking it up, is it primarily an topical antibiotic or is it also a very good option for keeping the shed in a moist environment? I have been giving saunas for stuck shed and careful humidity cycles. Recently it didn't solve my particular shed well enough. Is silvasorb a good choice for concentrated shed treatment? especially if first round of treatment doesn't knock it out.

Hey! Yes, that’s what it is :). It’s worked very well for my tree monitors. This is what Dr. Brown recommended to me as the first line of treatment to help loosen and remove the shedding. It’s not the cheapest but I bought a small container of it on Amazon to use for these types of situations. Hope that helps!

@@Reptiliatus That helps a lot! I will probably get some after checking with my vet. I know that it can be pretty rough mentally when animal husbandry issues come up, lizard loses a tail etc. Try not to blame yourself, you put the animal first and no one could have done better with the same situation and information.

I may not be THAT big of a reptile expert but from what I know, stress can lead to miss-sheds... This is probably what happened due to you trying to get him tamed Most of the time when doctor cannot explain how something was caused, it's caused by stress ... the same applies to humans.
