I grew up in the inner city of Chicago with a then alcoholic father and a codependent mother. It was a hard childhood amoung the gangs of Chicago during the AIDS and Crack Cocaine epidemic. Many days too many to count, Mr. Rogers uttered the only kind words I would hear. I am a social worker today, in many ways I use his kind words to help kids feel the way he made he feel about myself. For that, I am forever in his debt. Thank you, Mr. Rogers.

I've seen my share of heart-wrenching things in my time, but when that man came out in that wheelchair from sooo many years back....the waters did flow. I Love Mister Rogers still. Mr. Rogers was an exceptional human being. He did so much for children. So sad that children today don't have the opportunity to watch him. He made this abused child feel wanted, If not for him I think I would not have grown up the way I did. He made each child watching feel special, that he personally cared about them. I made it through the abuse with compassion, morals, love, and ended up helping other abused children. I miss him. I still remember what he said to congress in the 60's "This is what I give. I give an expression of care every day to each child, to help him realize that he is unique. I end the program by saying, “You’ve made this day a special day, by just your being you. There’s no person in the whole world like you, and I like you, just the way you are." Yes Mr Rogers...you did. And I still love you. You helped so many of us who were children of the secret, the children in the dark house. Because of you we made it! Every child needs a Mr. Rogers.

@Myra Crosby now that I think about it they were some kids that did make fun of you if you watched it. But I remember that the reason behind it was because they wanted to feel like a big kid and said Mr. Rogers was for babies, I had totally forgotten about it until now. Saying "you still watch Mr. Rogers" was a way of calling you a baby. Looking back at it now those where the kids that needed the most of Mr. Rogers, something inside of them was wrong/hurt/insecure for them to want to make fun of others, I'm sure deep down they loved the show because it made them feel special, but they didn't want to accept certain realities, they lied to themselves and wanted to hurt others.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to hear that man start to sing "It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood" without smiling. It's as close to a compulsory automatic reaction that there is in the human spirit. I am honored to brag I met Fred Rogers in person once when our high school choir did Joe Negri's local WQED talent show (whose set was in the same studio as the Neighborhood of Make believe) and he is as nice as he is on TV - and there wasn't a phony bone in that man's body.

When the boy with a disability showed up, all grown up, on Mr. Rogers' gala... Man, that one got me. I've never even seen the show, but I've heard so many good things about the man himself... To know that such a compassionate and kind human being existed, oh that brings tears to my eyes... I'm not a very religious man, but I'm pretty sure that Mr. Rogers is the model priest/Christian that everybody should try to be. Kind. Accepting. Humble. Affable. Loving. He's the most Christ-like that everyone can actually be. And that, technically, is the definition of a Christian: christ-like. I can only hope such good people exist somewhere in the world in the present day. We need more Mr. Rogers.

Seems that you can watch some episodes on PBS KZbin channel. Sadly, it appears to me that his show is no longer being aired because they feel that it is dated or children these days wouldn't be interested. I couldn't find any issues with copyright. In fact his family dedicates much of their time trying to keep his message alive.

PBS had determined that the programs are too far dated to air. I think local PBS stations can still air the program if they so choose to, but I don't many do.

I seriously am crying as I write this post. Fred Rogers touched millions and millions of children over the course of his career. There's a lot about the man that isn't as widely known, but being a child of the 80s and 90s, I got to grow up with him. As a kid, there wasn't much my folks would let me and my sister watch, but PBS was always safe. I know they have a different actor now, and they keep the show running since his death, but he means the world to me as one gentle man who loved children, and more importantly, he honored his Heavenly Father. (seriously, I almost thought this video was going to be something different)

What a good man in his years who loved life as a human being...especially seeing that ALL children need love, guidance, encouragement from the older people who are parents, relatives, and good neighbors "in the neighborhood". The day Fred Rogers passed away was a sad day for all of us...those that watched any of his shows over all those years. I wish there were more "Mr. Rogers" around to keep us on the straight and narrow path of good.
