Fun fact: concussions can change your mood. When filming this, I didn't realize I had a concussion. (The doctors checked my eyesight and helped me craft my story about the 50 ft wave, with the shark and the child I saved, but they didn't mention a concussion). The day after I filmed this, I felt really down and depressed. Then 2 days letter, felt happy again, like mood whiplash. I found out a week later I had a concussion and would have definitely not filmed the JWST video the same day, had I known. A dire warning for the lot of you!

I had a wipe out once where I feel off smacked my face on a sand bar as my board dragged me. My foot was still connect to the leash. I have a scar over my eye from that experience myself. Welcome to the club. Now you too will be able regale people with your story every time someone new asks what happened when the see it. I'm glad you are OK.

Glad you're ok and KEEP GOING OUT! It happens and it'll happen again. One time we hit Newport when a storm came in (only real time it gets good surf there) and I had a similar incident except when the wave broke out from under me, I did a header right onto the now missing foam and hit straight sand. I hit flat across my forehead and nose and was lucky enough not to break my neck like they do up at the Wedge. Anyway, broke my nose on both my face and my board. I went back to where the rest of our group was with blood all down the front of my wet suit. They were all "what happened!?" so I messed with them and said "I don't know...there were these guys and they said 'locals only!' and ran off." My friends were ready to fight but I started laughing. We had just seen POINT BREAK a few months before. Dated myself there, lol. Physics lesson...stormy weather no bueno for surfing when you're not used to it.

It looks good! I’m sure you gave back more than you got! I had a similar injury bodysurfing on Lake Michigan, years ago.

You're badass, I'm glad you're okay. It would be awesome once you get back out there if you did a video on some of the physics that make surfing possible!!

Glad you are OK. That feeling you got right after when you thought you could be seriously hurt may have been shock, when your body goes into survival mode. It is a common reaction to a serious injury and can leave you feeling awful beyond the injury you have just sustained.

Where did this happen? I had a similar injury surfing. Long ago, at Huntington Beach, I lost balance and fell backward. My board flew forward. Somehow it arched and pearled at the perfect angle to send the board back into my face. The tail of my board (rounded pin-tail) punched me in the face just an inch below my eye. An inch higher and I would have been blinded. I applied direct pressure. I was alone and drove a stick shift car. I drove slowly with my left hand holding my face and my right hand shifted gears and steered to the hospital where I had a number of stitches. I'm a big fan of your shows and I'm glad you were lucky, as I was, and not blinded. It was a humbling experience.
