Fun fact: concussions can change your mood. When filming this, I didn't realize I had a concussion. (The doctors checked my eyesight and helped me craft my story about the 50 ft wave, with the shark and the child I saved, but they didn't mention a concussion). The day after I filmed this, I felt really down and depressed. Then 2 days letter, felt happy again, like mood whiplash. I found out a week later I had a concussion and would have definitely not filmed the JWST video the same day, had I known. A dire warning for the lot of you!

I am glad you are okay, I had a soccer ball kicked directly into my eye when the opposing player was attempting to send it downfield (about a 90mph) kick and it caused a retina scar and permanent blind spot that could have led to a detachment. I just recommend covering your other eye and checking for any new blind or fuzzy spots as you heal. If they did not photograph your retina it may be a good idea too. Doing a blind spot test might be worthwhile too as your other eye compensates and you may not realize there is some damage.

I just discovered this channel, and I am impressed. First video I watched was the trip to the Arctic ice flow, and then this one. First video was one of an intellectual woman, followed by this where she bounces from one social mode to another, switching every heart beat. What diamond mine crafted this lady? She has so much fun doing this, and it makes viewing much more rewarding. Well done.

I was all over the place after experiencing a concussion from a sudden direction change on a waltzer ride that whipped my head around and cracked my neck. Short term memory was a mess, mood was all over the place. Good luck with your recovery!

Rain or Shiner is hilarious. This is the 5th video on your channel that I have watched and I am hooked. I love that you are authentic and can laugh at yourself and the things that can affect our channel. You also kept true to your brand and kept talking about the physics slide when all I kept wanting to ask was the gorry stuff like how it felt to get hit, how was the Urgent Care experience, what were the logistics of getting to the Urgent Care, and what was the blood loss like? Good on you for staying to the physics.

Yes I see it now. You were paddling frantically out to save the child who was about to be eaten by a Shark. But then a 50 foot wave hit you, knocked you off your board which then hit you in the eye. It left a slight blood trail in the water which attracted the shark away from the child. You scrambled back on your board, swooped up the child and paddled back to safety of shore. Bravo!!

Glad you're in good spirits and doing well in your healing! I've had incidents while surfing but not that one! I've also had numerous concussions, particularly in my youth (some with busted noses), from wrestling to baseball to firefighting. I might have CTE from all that but what can ya do? Press on through rain or shiner! Take care of yourself and get back to physicsing when you're ready!

I had a wipe out once where I feel off smacked my face on a sand bar as my board dragged me. My foot was still connect to the leash. I have a scar over my eye from that experience myself. Welcome to the club. Now you too will be able regale people with your story every time someone new asks what happened when the see it. I'm glad you are OK.

Glad you're ok and KEEP GOING OUT! It happens and it'll happen again. One time we hit Newport when a storm came in (only real time it gets good surf there) and I had a similar incident except when the wave broke out from under me, I did a header right onto the now missing foam and hit straight sand. I hit flat across my forehead and nose and was lucky enough not to break my neck like they do up at the Wedge. Anyway, broke my nose on both my face and my board. I went back to where the rest of our group was with blood all down the front of my wet suit. They were all "what happened!?" so I messed with them and said "I don't know...there were these guys and they said 'locals only!' and ran off." My friends were ready to fight but I started laughing. We had just seen POINT BREAK a few months before. Dated myself there, lol. Physics lesson...stormy weather no bueno for surfing when you're not used to it.

Glad you are OK. That feeling you got right after when you thought you could be seriously hurt may have been shock, when your body goes into survival mode. It is a common reaction to a serious injury and can leave you feeling awful beyond the injury you have just sustained.

Where did this happen? I had a similar injury surfing. Long ago, at Huntington Beach, I lost balance and fell backward. My board flew forward. Somehow it arched and pearled at the perfect angle to send the board back into my face. The tail of my board (rounded pin-tail) punched me in the face just an inch below my eye. An inch higher and I would have been blinded. I applied direct pressure. I was alone and drove a stick shift car. I drove slowly with my left hand holding my face and my right hand shifted gears and steered to the hospital where I had a number of stitches. I'm a big fan of your shows and I'm glad you were lucky, as I was, and not blinded. It was a humbling experience.
