They did the same with the Salvation ad, showing the main guy was a android. I could understand if it was a clip that sold the film, but a totally unnecessary spoiler in both these films. Now I come to think about it, T2 gave away Arnie being the good guy in the theatrical trailer.

The worst part of the film for me, which kills it to the core and all that is left here of the atmosphere of first parts - Jai Courtney, his casting for the role of Kyle Reese and what is left of the character in the film. Instead of a worn out by years of survival in nuclear ruins but experienced soldier which was devoted to his goal and able to adapt to the surrounding reality, in Genisys it’s a pumped-up hysteric who cannot keep himself in his hands in any stressful situation. In concept, switching him and Sara and making her a window to the world of the different future for him could work, but not with this performance, not with the tone of silly comedy and.. Not with this actor. However, I sincerely respect his casting agent, this person pulled out pretty juicy roles for him in 10’s

If they made the other two movies they had planned, pretty sure it would wind up being John Conner yet again who sent Pops back to save Sarah in 74 or whatever year it was. It couldn't be a new character because we didn't get any new characters that matter really - so unless Matt Smith's Skynet somehow sent Pops back, it kinda had to be John Conner again. So, he might have been turned into a Terminator, but he'd again be the hero by the end, I guess. That's my take. Or maybe ANOTHER timeline sent ANOTHER Pops from ANOTHER John Conner, I mean I'm getting confused just thinking about it now lol

I enjoyed the beginning of the movie where it served as a remake/mash up of the first two movies. Where Kyle Reese got to meet the badass Sarah Connor, the good T-800, and the T-1000. But then when they traveled to the 2010s the movie lost me.

Nah, at least Dark Fate hit the beats of a typical Terminator story. Genisys felt like a watered-down, dumb version of the series. I saw it in cinema twice and really enjoyed it at the time, despite the over-the-top action, the silly social media-based company, Matt Smith and Jae Courtney (the worst decisions for a Terminator film) and some of the humour. I guess I just liked the concept and I enjoyed the throwbacks and artistry that went into recreating the original scenes with a twist. Rewatching it now really does nothing for me but make me realise it’s the least like any of the other films, because it doesn’t fully understand them.
@thomasstudstrup5028

It did not have Kyle. It had Jai Courtney pissing all over the character. Go watch The Terminator and watch the real Kyle, masterfully played by Michael Biehn, who also looked the part of a starved tormented soldier from a future war. Jai looked like he had just been to the gym and sprayed himself with stinking cologne. But had Kyle Reese been a moron, then Jai would have nailed him. It also did not have T1000. Robert Patrick wasnt in it. Insted it was some asian actor.

It ain't much, but honest work. I love how the franchise has fallen into a recursive loop of revisionism, like Primer for the salt of the earth. Instead of pandering to the desperate escapism of people for whom, like alcohol, the world is too much. Constantly hammering at the inescapable gravity of Judgment Day is way more interesting than crying about losing your happy ending. It's like a Roku's Basilisk thing. I liked it before Arrival, Annihilation or Interstellar picked up on it, getting to even recently follow anime like Kado: The right answer or Kokkoku.

My official Terminator 3 is now the video game Terminator Resistance. The gameplay may have felt dated, but every other facet of that game, from story to setting to lore was made with the utmost love from the developers and it's the only thing since that's truly felt like a successor that fits the mold of T1 and T2. It even does the ONE thing everyone has wanted from something Terminator related that tries to end the franchise...it rounds it self out BACK to T1 in a very believable way that says our heroes could never beat time itself, but here was the journey they went on to get BACK to point A. The game just worked and it's the T3 we deserve and never got.

I enjoyed Genisys. It was goofy fun and it took the franchise in some zany directions. I wouldn't have mind seeing where it all went. Or just where any of them could have went. The Terminator is in a perpetual state of death and rebirth and that's kinda meta.

Ignoring that this movie literally skips over John being born because they quickly left the 1984 timeline and thus he was never conceived, I really wish that the story from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles had been carried on. Before its cancelation (good old writers strike helped with a lot of shows dying that year) the show ended on a huge cliffhanger BUT it did answer the question on how John survives Judgement Day and brings up some interesting twists in the war against Skynet. Not every machine wants humans exterminated and there is a faction that broke away from Skynet and allied with the Resistance, working together to bring down Skynet. That alone would have been amazing to explore in more detail, but it will sadly never come to be.

The best way to watch a trilogy in the muddled Terminator series is: 1) Salvation 2) Terminator 3) Judgement Day You (1) set the stakes and then (2) go for the bleak middle chapter and (3) finish with the high point in the series

really tried to mix old school nostalgia with a fresh start.. but it ended up as a bit of a confusing mess. It’s like they were juggling too many timelines and ideas at once, and instead of crafting something new and exciting, they just ended up with a movie that feels all over the place. It’s a tough break for fans hoping for a worthy follow up to Terminator 2

I think the real problem with Terminator films since T2 is that Cameron originally had no intention of making anymore films and had even shot an ending where the war never happened for T2. Those two films were the story and that’s how it should have ended. You can’t really do any better than the first 2 films. Some movies aren’t meant to be franchises. Terminator was one of them.

Right out of the gate, Genisys shot itself in the foot by revealing that John Connor had become a Terminator in the marketing. I don’t know if it would have saved the box office, but finding out that John Connor was now a villain would’ve been a massive reveal in the theater. My biggest issue with Genisys is the story though. It is so damn messy and confusing, and I get that it’s like that because they were planning on explaining everything in the sequels, but that was a bad idea imo, especially since it didn’t and won’t GET any sequels lol. They should’ve cut back on some of the unexplained/confusing bits, maybe saved them for a sequel or something, and focused on making a good standalone movie first and foremost, then if it got a sequel it could show that the T-5000 (Matt Smith) survived, instead of sequel-baiting everything so hard. I don’t think they even had an overall plan for the sequels, instead half-assing the story like Disney did with the Star Wars sequel trilogy. I still want to know who sent Pops back to protect Sarah. My guess is an alternate Sarah sent it back, but it’s all just so confusing with the original T-800, Pops, a new T-1000, a T-3000, a T-5000, and the future changing as Kyle is traveling to the past. Way too much shit to throw into a single movie and explain almost none of it besides “multiple timelines”. Even with Genisys having such a messy story, I greatly prefer it over Dark Fate. I lost respect for James Cameron over that movie…

My problem with this movie is that it tried to do too much. As you said, 7 timelines! I liked the idea of the polluted timeline in 1984. But then we just zip through that and onto a retread of T3 and T:SCC, and a less satisfying version of either of them.

Not gonna lie, I think Salvation was really fun and a great way to move forward and with the added bonus of not having to fuck around with timelines. Just give us a bleak post apocalyptic future and go with it, since the first two movies perfectly built up this exact expectation.

I liked Genisys, when you involve multiverses and time travel, you can just make up anything, and as long as you are creative enough to accept some bizarre alternate timeline, it's just fun.

None of the films since T2 have had an actual genuinely new idea. They have had new terminators, new applications of time travel, but nothing that holds up as a new concept. They may have forgotten to broach that always pertinent question, it's not about if they could... It's about if they should... Everything about it was shoe horned. They had a movie with no reason... With no "why"... And they thought they could make it up by replacing it by inserting it into their title.

The first 45 minutes were decent. The way the 2029 and 1984 scenes went, it was clear to me they were a fan of the first two. But when it came to 2015 or 2017 (whatever year), that's where they struggled to come up with something original, and it felt like T3 did. -- Instead of making John Connor into a T-3000, I would have been interested to see John Connor come back as himself, with the enemy being Matt Smith. It wouldn't have made it great, but I would have been fine seeing that instead of what we got.

I quite enjoyed Genisys for what it was. Skynet being a global OS launch and everyone being excited for it was a neat idea, and it was fun seeing memorable scenes from the first 2 films (rated 18 and 15 respectively here in the UK) recreated surprisingly authentically in a film that was rated 12, thanks to some cunning editing and framing. imho, the whole franchise is a bit "timey wimey" anyway, so why not run with that?

I thought it was good even though they screwed up with the recasting of Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor. It would have been better if Michael biehn and Linda Hamilton returned for their roles. And plus the movie was pg13. Terminator is rated R. End of story. But I had no problem with who they cast as t1000. Robert Patrick was great as the t1000 in terminator 2 and is still the best. But the guy they casted in this film from GI Joe 1 and 2 was just as good. I was glad to see the terminator team up with Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese. And see the terminator battle another version of himself. And it was good to see Kyle and Sarah reunite with their son John before he is revealed to be another terminator.

I remember when they cast Nick Stahl as JC in T3 and thinking 'oh boy, what a mis-cast, they couldn't have got this more wrong' Well, here we are. Absolutely idiotic choice for Connor in this movie, the bloke just seems to smirk throughout his screen time! Good to see Hollywood is over the other side of their boner for Jai Courtney too, he sure knows how to sleepwalk into the destruction of franchises...

You answered it right in your opening "what might be the greatest action film of all time".. Terminator and T2 are horror movies at heart and trying to compete with them as action movies is wrong.. unless you're gonna give us the future war James Cameron showed us.. Salvation got a lot right from that approach, Anton Yelchin as Kyle was top.. I'm not sure if he passed before genisys or not but if not that's a major fuck up in their part not keeping him.. and thats before getting into the John Connor twist.. meanwhile matt smith as the embodiment of skynet could of been awesome

There’s some interesting aspects to the film- the ‘84 scenes shows Cameron’s original concept of a shapeshifting Terminator in the mix and I think how they catered for an older Arnie worked well. But it’s hard to get past the casting of Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney, and some terrible fan service…how many times do we need to see a terminator walk out of fire?! Dark Fate though has elevated Genisys a touch because despite the rehashed bits, I still give it credit for attempting a different angle instead of a by the numbers rip off.
