The Mage's Guild wasn't destroyed by popular suspicion from the uneducated masses. The Mage's Guild was destroyed by internal conflict between those who denounced necromancy and those who encouraged it. At the end of the 3rd Era, Archmage Travern banned necromancy, which created havoc throughout the Guild. A huge number of mages, including half of the members of the Council of Mages, left the Guild entirely. These mages would go on to found the College of Whispers, while the remnants of the Mage's Guild would go on to found the Synod.

So was the Thieves Guild.. They to were on the point of total collapse. And I guess I could understand why the Grey Fox disappeared.. I mean the Hero of Cyrodiil whom held those positions later became Sheogorath right? So a lot of high positions in many guilds were left untaken after he left for the Shivering Isles. But if he had not given the Cowl to anyone, the title officially dies since it was the Cowl that made one the Grey Fox.. Or one could say it is in the possession of Sheogorath and thereby he still IS the Grey Fox (atleast if the Hero of Cyrodill really became sheogorath)

DutchGabbers It is not canon (Or confirmed canon) that the protagonist in any Elder Scrolls game completed any quest(lines) other than the Main Questline and Expansion Questlines. Nerevarine: Main Questline, Tribunal Main Questline, Bloodmoon Main Questline, East Empire Company Questline (Foundation of Raven Rock) Champion of Cyrodiil: Main Questline, Knights of the Nine Questline, Shivering Isles Questline Dragonborn: Main Questline, Dawnguard Questline, Dragonborn Questline While the completion of the Thieves Guild Questline IS canon, the Champion of Cyrodiil completing it is not.

Shouldn't the College of Winterhold older than any magical institution? Because when you first meet Mirabelle, she says that the College has been a "fixture in Skyrim for thousands of years."

Yes but the college of winterhold has not been easy access to most in Tamriel and by the impression I get they only accept students who possess some sort of ability in magic while the mages guild accepted even the least talented of mages and was in more or less every major city in each province

The College is the oldest magic organization still around I believe, at least when it comes to non-mer organizations. There’s evidence for it going back to the second era, and legend says it dates back to the first era. For comparison, the Mages Guild was founded in the early second era.

The college of Winter hold did not replace the Guild. We know that the college originated before Vanus Galerion even thought of creating the Mg. Shalidor who is far more powerful and wise than Vanus created The College, people say with magic, perhaps so. But yeah, the College and the Mages guild were kind of different. The Mg wanted to share magic and knowledge with the world, though restricting the practise of dark magic. We don't know how the college acted before the great collapse but in the present day they practise in secret, without major restrictions. It seems the college allows all magic if it is not used to endanger the locals or the mages.

You were missing one important factor. The White Gold Concordant. Along the list of demands the Aldmeri Dominion made to the Empire was the dissolution of the Guilds Act. This effectively made extinct the Mages Guild, and Fighters Guild among others.

The mages guild was destroyed after the Oblivion crisis. Long before the Great War.

There's nothing in the lore about that. The White-Gold Concordat banned Talos worship, disbanded the blades (and gave unofficial permission for the Thalmor to hunt the blades down), ceded large swathes of territory to the dominion, and essentially kicked Hammerfel out of the empire (technically southern Hammerfel was originally ceded to the Thalmor, but the Redguards refused to give it up and declared their independence - the empire was forced to recognize that in order to keep the treaty). The mage's guild had already disbanded long before the great war (which occurred approximately 25 years prior to the events of Skyrim), in the years immediately following the Oblivion crisis. The fighter's guild is still around in the time of Skyrim; they just don't operate in that province because of two reasons - the developers fucked up on a lot of shit lorewise (including that) and they retconned the idea that the companions took on that role (despite the fact that they have only one headquarters and a handful of members serving a province that is at least a little bigger than Cyrodiil).

the Mages Guild was founded by a former Psijic mage who believed magical learning should be available to everyone, not just a select few groups, like the Psijics

They're basically a bunch of Aldmer who, in simple terms, rejected worshiping the Aldmeri pantheon of Gods, so they distanced themselves on the Isle of Artaeum and focused on studying the Old Ways (basically Mysticism)

I'm pretty sure the collage of winterhold existed prier to the mages guild and has never been apart of the mages guild not to mention the collage and city existed prier to mages guild as for why the city of winterhold no longer exists , the great collapse

So even the Daedra have no idea where the Dragons originated from? We know they came from Akaviir but before that? Nothing. Makes you wonder if TES 6 will be in one of the other lands. I hope this is the case or that all of Tamriel is open to the player. $90 a base copy and $45 for DLC would turn a profit for that i think.
