The Earth King didn't deserve to resume his position after the war. He completely abandoned his country when Ba Sing Se fell, and did nothing to help continue the fight against the fire nation. In fact, he hindered the rebellion by not mentioning to Team Avatar that he had told Azula about the invasion plan.

It ties in with the state of the world 70 years later though. Imean the Earth Queen is obviously cruel, selfish and unfit to rule. But people love her anyways. Seems like most people in the Earth Kingdom are loyal monarchists and WANTED him back. What was Team Avatar supposed to do? It just makes sense after all, even though it is the wrong move.

With a different writer it’s inevitable with a different interpretation the characters are different and there has been a year in universe (the whole show too on place over a year the characters changed a lot) and complex issues at least. But I do understand it being distracting. There maybe should have been some type of villain at least here to influence Aang that he was irresponsible for not killing Ozai. That would pararell Zuko being influenced by Ozai here and lots of people think he should have just tried to kill Ozai so it would have been interesting that Aang is reacting to something like that and acting irrationally. Now it seems more like he could not say no when Zuko asked something and freaked out because he grabbed Katara’s hand.

It’s kinda weird how the original ATLA takes place over a single year, and yet this comic takes place an entire year later. There’s so, SO much character development that takes place in the show and to see an equal amount of time just be skipped over and ignored feels weird. Like yeah maybe Aang’s acting out of character or maybe there was some weird shit going on in that past year that made him change his mind and behavior a LOT, we just don’t know
@bevvvy1374
@bevvvy1374 Жыл бұрын
No, we do know. If the writers have a character magically acting different than how they usually would, it's just bad writing. Just because time has passed doesn't mean there's a "what if". If they don't show this off-screen character development or whatever, then they're just pulling things out of their asses.
@sarasamaletdin4574
@sarasamaletdin4574 Жыл бұрын
It’s not bad writing if a different character has different interpretations of characters and how they grow and react. The situation could have been set up different such as Aang being influenced by some villain or maybe just the Earth King saying it was irresponsible that he did not kill Ozai. But the writing having different ideas of characters and what they would do isn’t bad writing.
@bevvvy1374
@bevvvy1374 Жыл бұрын
@@sarasamaletdin4574 It is bad writing if it contradicts established facts about the characters. It would be one thing if this was like Marvel or DC comics where each comic is (mostly) its own thing and don't require you to read every other comic/show. But that isn't the case here. Going by your logic, the author could just write Aang as a mass murdering sociopath that believes all firebenders should be eaten alive since that's his interpretation of the character. You see the problem here? If you're going to write for a pre-established universe, you have to follow the rules of it. That includes making characters act within reason of what has already been established. If not, you need good reasons why they aren't acting the way they usually do.
@PKryik
@PKryik Жыл бұрын
Disagree. There need to be timeskips in which nothing happens and the characters enjoy relative peace. Honestly it’d be super immersion breaking and tonally jarring if it went from adventure to adventure even POST war.
@bevvvy1374
@bevvvy1374 Жыл бұрын
@@PKryik I'm not saying there needs to be adventures right after one another. I'm not sure where you got that from. Time-skips can be a good and easy way to advance the world and have characters mature at the same time. The problem comes when writers use this as justification to change how characters act. They want the pay-off of character development without actually earning it, which is obviously a problem. Think about Luke from The Last Jedi and you'll hopefully see what I mean.
@ShinobiPXO
@ShinobiPXO Жыл бұрын
3:35 Zuko's promise to Aang to kill him is actually an inverse of Katara's promise to kill Zuko. Zuko doesn't fully trust himself not to make another mistake, which is basically what Katara said before. Zuko *always* struggles to do the right thing. As for Aang's agreeing to the promise, you can argue that he didn't actually think it was ever going to happen which is consistent enough. Gene Yang also makes a point that, unlike with Ozai, Zuko is basically giving Aang *consent* to kill him which does change the context a little.
@PaulPower4
@PaulPower4 Жыл бұрын
It's also probably why Katara gives Aang the nod that tips Aang over into making the promise in the first place. It's sort of one of those things where the characters are being dumb and making questionable choices right now, but eventually they'll resolve it and be in a better place by the end of the comic - kind of like a lot of episodes of the show, really.
@papersonic9941
@papersonic9941 Жыл бұрын
You'd think he would've asked Katara instead, lol. Or at least asked Aang to just spiritbend him. But in all seriousness, I feel this plot would've worked better as a novel than as a comic. If they'd had more time to explore Aang's thought process you could make it clear to the audience why this situation is different in his mind than when he spared the genocidal warlord a year ago. Plus, all the politics might flow better.
@ShinobiPXO

@@papersonic9941 Good point. But I think the comic is good in a way you can interpret the characters thoughts as opposed to being told. This is really unnecessary, over-the-top and contrived for the conflicts (both regarding the colonies, and also Aang’s forced promise to kill Zuko), these conflicts are already effective enough, and don't need artificial help. Same thing for Zuko, Katara and Aang’s fight.
@jordancampbell8597

@@matheus5230 Exactly! There's also a not insignificant issue that this should not have taken a full year before the conflict got this heated, considering the entire events of the first show took place over the course of less than a year. And that's not factoring in how that brat Kori committed high treason and got a slap on the wrist. And it makes even less sense for *Toph* to be so nonchalant about the possibility of needing to kill Zuko. She was the one who was vouching for him in Season Three, when it was far more justified for the Gaang to execute him. And even if Aang does kill Zuko, who the heck becomes Fire Lord instead?
@matheus5230

@@jordancampbell8597 About Kori, I guess that Zuko didn't want to be like his father. He actually threatens to kill her after defeating her, but then he hears her complaints and changes his mind. About taking one year for the conflict to get so heated, it makes some sense when considering that the younger colonies were ended first. Also, Zuko was victim of five assassination attempts before Kori.

Aang's necklace looks like a meditation Mala, usually 108 seeds/beads 📿 They work by starting from the tassle or an extended bead or one of the medallions in this case, And as you focus on the repeated mantra or breathing exercise, you shift the necklace with your thumb, bead by bead, until you reach the point were you started. So that's my guess as to what he's doing around 7:18

I'm more confused about why Zuko and Aang felt the need to set up all these roundabout solutions (Zuko literally getting murdered somehow being the main one) to the possibility of Zuko going bad like his father, instead of just agreeing to sit down and talk through the political disagreements at hand like the fellow war heroes they are. But who knows, maybe Zuko's still scared he could end up with a symmetrical face the next time he attends a war meeting. That, or just bad writing.

Cool to see you covering the comics! I really love the main conflict with Yu Dao and the Fire Nation colonies. Both Zuko and Aang have a point, but in the end it is Zuko who is in the right, athough it takes a bit for everyone to get on the same page, and I love that. We get to see our favourite characters return and Zuko's struggle with being Firelord and having to redeem an entire nation. What I didn't really like is Aang's promise which is a central part of this comic, I honestly feel like it wasn't really needed and that it just adds unnecessary drama. The biggest issue I have with it is that Aang was so set on NOT killing Ozai, but makes a promise he'd kill Zuko... like... if it REALLY got that bad (which it won't and Aang has to know that), he can always just take Zuko's bending, like he did with Ozai... Funnily enough, some people had an issue with Aang not killing Ozai and if he really had killed him, it would put this entire comic into completely different perspective and make the promise have a lot of weight! But as is, it just doesn't make sense. One thing I'm okay with though is the characters still being flawed and not fully developed. They've grown after the finale of the show, but they're not perfect. Zuko seems to have gotten over his anger issues, but it makes sense he'd still lash out and lose his temper sometimes (especially when compared to his father). Katara is kindhearted but she can be really judgemental sometimes and it's hard to change her mind. Aang above all cares about doing the right thing, but sometimes it's hard to see what that is and he can get swayed to make a wrong decision. Still, the main characters are all friends and they listen to each other and trust each other, so some conversations that happen between them in the comic shouldn't have happened or they should have been written better. In order for the conflict to work, it would have been better if they had been apart for a longer period of time and if Zuko's attitude had severely changed. Overall I do like the comic, it has a lot of elements (ha) I really like, but some glaring problems too. Sorry for the rant.

Honestly, people who defend the destruction of Zuko's character in the comics annoy me the most. As if taking away the strength and competence that he had earned during his journey and turning him int an emotional and physical punching bag for his abusers, that he had already overcome, while making important people in his life turn on him, would be an actual example of good writing. And not just bryke being envious of the fact that the most popular character had been written by someone else.

Zutara has never been the belief that they literally are together, textually. The idea is that it should be textual, in theory. It is just a minor criticism of a detail that makes everything more natural. Aang is literally only with her because hes the protagonist. Katara has significantly more extreme emotions toward Zuko than she ever does with Aang, and under the theory that the opposite of love is apathy, that means she would probably be happier with Zuko.

7:06 With regard to the beaded pendant, this is a monk instrument used during meditation. You're supposed to hold the pendant and mentally speak your mantra, then move the pendant around by one bead through your fingers, repeating the process. For Aang here, moving the pendant bead by bead would accomplish the effect of "rotating" the kingdom emblems, which explains why you see Earth on top in one panel, and Fire in the next. It also makes sense for Aang to be doing this since he's communing with Roku immediately afterwards. I hope that helped!
