The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!

I'm continuously amazed at the people who belittle his accomplishments. He was fast, amazingly athletic, a fierce competitor, and clearly one of the, if not the greatest ever. And the "But Bill Russell" people? Well, imagine if, all those years, Wilt had played for the Celtics, and Bill was on the poorer teams. Would Bill have all the rings? Or would the Celtics have been even more dominant? And remember, the greatest rebounding game in history, 55 boards? Wilt got those playing against Russel and the Celtics. And, believe me, I think Bill Russell was great, and admire him immensely. And Bill respected Wilt a lot more than these armchair critics do.

I love that idea, it reminds me of the 10yr stats, that Johnny Arnett did, but it'll be much harder because it goes into the realm of a big "what if" I know Wilt Chamberlain would have the block record for those extra seven seasons, and he would leave the Lakers and go to a team where he can score more points again. People forget Wilt Chamberlain could have put the scoring point record so far out of reach for everybody else, but he didn't, we got to remember Wilt Chamberlain was the fastest to get to 5,000 points 10,000 points 15,000 points 20,000 points 25,000 points 30,000 points, that's more impressive than getting it over longevity

@@masmirage I'll make it clear that I do like the idea. But I think the difference is that this video is at least using established numbers and extending the time on the same games on those current numbers. This is hypothetical. Yet structured in real game numbers and extending the game time playing. Your video idea is using established numbers and assumes the player will be as productive a year or many years later with an unlimited amount of unknown variables. Using real game numbers and extending the time with years. Way more inaccurate. This video does get into fantasy as many of Jonny's videos do. That's in '00 NBA against players who are trained. Wilt averaged 22 points a game against the great centers in the 60's. He only dominated the dudes who were 6'5 Centers, some who had other jobs in the summer. You'd be surprised how many bad centers were in the league back then. Then, the new rules wouldn't allow Wilt to dominate in Shaq's era. The wings back then shot 28% from beyond 10 feet so almost 80% of all shots were around the rim. Once the shooters got better, the other positions became more of an an emphasis. Wilt was a monster for his time. After the league got better, followed by some key rule changes, Wilts numbers dropped dramatically before the age of 30.... From 29 to 37, he averaged only 21 pts per game on a 43 minutes per game average.

Players today need rest games and unfortunately oft get injured while playing around 35-39mpg. Increase this to 45+ mpg and their total games played will drop further. And while they may not even need the minimum 58 games to win the scoring title it just isn’t the same. (Season per game leaders need a minimum of 58 games played (since 13-14) to be eligible - however can still technically win it if their adjusted average per 58 games is better than anyone else’s (total points scored through games played / 58 game minimum) - ie how Myles Turner still won BPG in 20-21). This is where Wilts 48.5mpg becomes even more impressive - he didn’t miss any games. That over a three year stretch he still averaged 48mpg and still didn’t miss any games. The fact that Wilt ranks 9 (NBA only) in career minutes played while only playing 14 seasons it is very remarkable, most other players in the top 20 have 250+ more games than him. Oscar Robertson is the closed in games played (-5) is way down at 22.

@@theinktician Wilt still averaged almost as many minutes for the second half of his career (never less than 42) and he only had one season where he missed a significant number of games due to injury and still averaged excellent rebounding numbers (leading the league his last three seasons) while putting up some of the best field goal percentages of his career. The only thing that significantly dropped was his scoring and that's not indicative of a lack of scoring ability because he did have some big scoring games late in his career on occasion, albeit not as big as earlier in his career and with less frequency. The reason why Wilt didn't put up the same scoring numbers in the second half of his career was because he just didn't need to. Basically in his Warrior days, he needed to score 40 every night just to have a chance for his team to win games because he was by far the most efficient and capable scorer on some teams that otherwise lacked big time scorers. Whereas in Philly and LA, Wilt had big time scorers on his teams. You can read about how the Sixers hiring Alex Hannum changed the team's strategy and Wilt's game changed significantly as a result. Hannum convinced Wilt that the team would play better if he didn't focus as much on scoring and focus his efforts on defense and spreading the ball around. Wilt bought into it and the result was that his teams had better records than earlier in his career and he won a championship, multiple MVPs, and led the league in assists while still leading the league in rebounding and probably leading the league in blocked shots if that had been an official stat. But he could still score which is made clear by a few 60 point games in 67 and 69, the last of which still holds the record for being the oldest player to score more than 60 points. But Wilt could have absolutely averaged 30 a game in those later seasons but didn't need to for his team to win and he could have played a few more years if he wanted to.

The problem with some of the numbers is comparing eras and the rules in different eras. Especially today, the defensive numbers just aren't there because the rules are more geared toward the offense. If you notice almost all the top block numbers came from the mid 80s, 5 out of 8 of the scoring was from 2016-2021, steals were all 1991 or earlier. Wilt's numbers being what they are even going against the bloated scoring of todays era just makes it even more impressive.

That’s insane! The amount of rebounds in the 60’s is just nuts. I think Kobe and MJ might have even averaged more points, but it’s hard to say since you can only go on averages. This would be interesting to see if players playing the full 48 would have had an impact on playoff series. Maybe a team could’ve squeaked out a series when they didn’t normally. Man this has me thinking of all kinds of stuff. Haha.4

Couple of points to take note of: 1.) pace of game was faster in 60s (including Wilts historic season). If we adjust for pace, averages of other 8 GOAT candidates would also improve because Wilts 50 point season had fastest pace out of all other seasons presented in this video. 2) impressive averages of current players are product (among other things) of inflated number 3 pointers and softening of defense (game was opened up for perimeter players in last 15 years). That being said, I loved this video. It really shows what beast Wilt truly was. He is the only player that played those minutes because he was the only one that could actually do it!

AND this ERA has also INFLATED STATS like ASSISTS AND REBOUNDS. WILT would average 20 assists if every pass he made outside counted as an assist. His rebounds would probably be the same since he wouldnt have to battle other players and get uncontested REBOUNDS.
@Diospepreco
@Diospepreco 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. Now all stats are inflated. More shots and no defense mean more points, more assists, more rebounds, less risk of injury, less stamina needed. Imagine a clown like Harden trying to deal with the Knicks' defense of the mid 90s for example. Or the Pistons in the late 80s/early 90s. I'm not saying they should legalize battery like it was in that era, but at least a minimum of effort should be required to drive into the lane and pad your stats. Now it's basically a cross between street basket and an all-star game.

@@dododump3144 Normally i dont answer LOW IQ people...because its a waste of time. BUT i will try this time. YES REBOUNDS were inflated on WITLS ERA. But they were due to the PACE of the game. But there was always at least 2 players from each team trying to get the rebound and fighting to get the ball.. NOW there are no BIGS near the rim because they are all outside shooting and now most of the rebounds are uncontested. DO YOU understand what uncontested REBOUNDS mean?? Thats why CP3 just broke his CAREER rebounding record with 0 offensive rebounds. THATS why KONCHAR a 6,5ft SG got 17 rebounds this season. SO NOW REBOUNDS are INFLATED.

Another Awesome vid Wilt also avg well over 10 blocks a game which can be researched via newspaper articles and nba archives. This takes insane amount of energy given all the other areas of the game he’s also dominating numbers in. And I doubt any of these other guys remain healthy enough to keep up with these minutes and numbers with wilts pace. We can see that the more you play especially nonstop, the more energy it takes and more fatigue wears on you. Even with the slower paces It’s highly unlikely that these guys put up these numbers that are calculated on if their performance stays the exact same and not their fatigue dropping let alone the circumstances wilt faces such as referee allowing pummeling defenses just for wilt, strict violation rules, no offensive fouls to score, 8-14 teams where you play nothing but the best of the best players and more often than a 30 league team where you can rest more or have easier games against more lesser players that wouldn’t have made a league with no room for them from the mid 60s-early 70setc…. But even in a universe where we think the per 48 is a reality to say what a player would exactly do if they played all 48 ignoring their inferiority to Wilts stamina as an athlete, it’s incredible how Wilt is still top of the very top of the list scoring rebounding Playmaking and defending combined. Amazing video

I think the most likely candidates for a possible 48 MPG season would be a younger LeBron and/or Giannis. I remember I went to a Jazz/Bucks game (as a Bucks fan living in Utah, it was a win-win for me) in March 2019. Giannis played 32 minutes and had 43 pts, 14 reb, and 8 ast, while Donovan Mitchell played 39 minutes, and had 46 pts, 6 ast, and 3 reb. (Apparently, upon review of the game I just did, Derrick Favors had a 23 point, 18 reb game in 32 minutes, as well.) If Giannis had played the full 48 minutes that night, he would've scored 64 points and had 21 rebounds. And Mitchell would've scored 57.

My question is what's so different about wilts era compare to the era we live in now? This new era of basketball is horrible in terms of defense teams can put 130 points a game each combined, I feel like this era has watered down so much compared to the golden age era and to me one of the factors why lebron is still very efficient (offensively only). I feel like the only difference is that today's players are more "skilled" and there is finally a 3 point basket which in wilts day there was not.

Would have could have - no way. This is one reason Wilt's numbers are so insane. To say "Well in Wilt's Day they averaged 120 possessions a game vs 88 possessions a game today so that means if you add 30 more possessions a game for today's players then their stats would increase by 25%". No they wouldn't! Players today have to rest with 88 possessions a game - so add 30 more possessions and players would be resting even more and their chance of injury with increased possessions / increased playing time would increase. No player in history is going to play a full 48- minute game - for a full season! Other than Wilt! They can't. This argument makes no sense - it's like a player playing one quarter and scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in that quarter. If the player didn't play the rest of the game - you wouldn't say, "He scored 80 points and grabbed 40 rebounds for the game. He didn't!" Nothing is stopping any player from playing all the minutes of a game - but they don't because they can't. If a player could play every minute of every game - he would but he can't! And again the insane number of minutes Wilt played at a high level for the entire game - entire season makes Wilt's accomplishments all the more incredible.

Because of the vast differences in pace between eras, Wilt got way more possessions in his 48 minutes than most of the others did. This should probably be based on per 100 possessions instead. Also, other things make a difference, like people in general being worse shooters back then, so there were more rebound available, and obvi the fact there was no three point line, etc

Let that sink in. I've seen interviews with Wilt Chamberlin, when he says he chose not to score more points, he literally means it was his choice, no one would/could stop him if he really wanted to go higher and even in that self-nerfed state he still produce numbers. That lets me know he wasn't bluffing. That is no mortal man. That is a basketball god.
