Germany could probably have gotten a german king on the norwegian throne. They did not really bother that much in our timeline because of the ongoing first moroccan crisis. But that would probably not have happened in this timeline. They would be able to spend more ressources and time on trying to convince the norwegians. The candidate chosen in our timeline was the danish prince christian. It would be a more complicated affair in this timeline at least.

Unintended consequences are never factored in, the choice you make includes the choices you don't make, leading to other issues. 1. Germany invades Russia, the allies will step in if power balance breaks. 2. Power shift will cause a greater war, economic trade will prevent war. Contained by other great powers: Spain = no further gains in Europe Ottomans = no further gains in Europe France = no further gains in Europe Russia = no further gains in Europe Pillars of power balance in Europe: Briton: Oceans Russia: Land Turks: Land/Sea France: Land/Sea Germany: Technology Problems with power: 1. Outlaws = criminals 2. Corruption = inefficiency 3. Opposition = resistance 4. Rivals = challenger 5. Utility = use it or lose it Central authority vs regional authorities: 1. Chain of command, compliance with authority 2. Forces of unity > force of division 3. No crisis or systemic shocks 4. No regional drift or divergence 5. No formation of independant identities 6. No erossion of social fabric 7. Self reinforcing identity Perfect authority = perfect order Perfect outlaw = perfect chaos Break power balance = rapid growth in power, rapid shift in power Systemic shift, different order, different structure, different organs

One for France would also be interesting, especially post-Napoleon. France had their falling birthrates, threats from Germany, and playing second fiddle to Britain. Switzerland would have likely remained whole, as breaking off to join other countries wasn't popular back then, only perhaps in 1918 during a short time where Switzerland's existance was on Edge after WWI. Austria however is very likely. If the Austro-Hungarian empire was dissolved or reduced passively and no one could go against Germany, Austria and allies, it's likely Austria would've joined Germany. Other than modern Austria joining, the borders of German Austria (a post-WWI rump state, predecessor to interwar Austria) would've likely been included as well, and possibly the rest of Czeckia, as seeing ethnic maps, the population was slowly becoming German, which can be seen in our world between 1918 and 1938 with the growth ot Sudeten Germans. Other lands could be added but aren't as likely, except possibly Slovenia and Istria, to gain ports in the Adriatic sea, part of the Mediterranean.

@@sandjaarx With Austria I would say it depends on their system of state. Even if the Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved prior to WWI, as long as the Austrian parts (Austria and Bohemia/Czechia) remained monarchies under the house of Habsburg-Lorraine (which is likely), they would've never joined the German Empire willingly without war as that would've been the biggest humiliation for the Habsburgs. Not only would they have had to give up their title "Emperor of Austria" - as there can only be one Emperor in one country - the house of Habsburg-Lorraine which had been dominating the German speaking world for centuries before 1866 would've had to accept Prussia as their superior. This humiliation they would've never accepted. It is nore likely that the Austrian parts of Austria-Hungary would've remained an independent Empire of Austria in this scenario. Only the events of our timeline, which saw the abolition of the monarchy in Austria as a result of the defeat in WWI would've lead to these lands joining Germany, which, of course, also happened in our timeline with the Anschluss.

Another version of this that might be nice is for Japan, as it's one of the countries this could work especially well for (considering the rather limited number of very big mistakes namely the Strike South doctrine)
@bingobongo1615

The strike south doctrine might or might not it have been an error… Japan didn’t lose the war because of Pearl Harbor but they lost it when the U.S. oil embargoed them leaving Japan with no other option than to attack southwards or give up their empire… It was triggered by Japan occupying Vietnam (so there the southern strike doctrine was an error) but it’s unlikely the embargo otherwise would not have come. The U.S. just started the biggest ship building program in history, based long range bombers on the Philippines, embargoed Japan and already engaged German submarines and send tons of material to the British and Soviets so there was no question war would come…

I like the notion of Benelux unifying and focusing on trade, perhaps gaining any non-French parts of northern France and any non-German parts of northwest Germany. They could do what Qatar is doing in our timeline, making itself an indispensable hub for commercial sea (and eventually air) traffic, shipbuilding, etc. In our timeline they have first, second, and fourth busiest ports in Europe, but if optimized they would also be the rail hub. With t/he Hague, they would eventually become effectively the capital of Europe, perhaps dominating it much as the Grand Duchy of Moscow came to dominate Russia and oversee a vast empire.

@@sebe2255 If you argue that Limburgish is Dutch, you’re just opening a tin of worms you don’t want to open. It’s it’s own language, you could claim just as easily that Limburgish is just a dialect of German really. The Rhineland speaks Limburgish, while also very clearly speaking German, does that make the Limburgish Regions in the Benelux countries German as well? It definitely doesn’t.
@sebe2255
@sebe2255 Жыл бұрын
@@karlmuller4764 It obviously is. Limburgish is a regional language that is closer to Standard Dutch than it is to standard German. It was also the first of the Dutch regional languages to develop a literary tradition. And ultimately the vast majority of Limburgish people have identified with a Dutch culture and entity and not a German one Also “the Rhineland” doesn’t speak Limburgish. It is a relatively small part of the border region in Germany. Currently the German parts of the language are almost dead and primarily spoken by a few old people. It is not like people in Düsseldorf actually still speak Limburgish (the same goes for Klevelandish, another “Dutch” regional language which is also not really spoken in Germany anymore). Ultimately this is an alt history video, and the Limburgish and Klevelandish regions could easily have been seen as Dutch as well. Especially because German is more of a merger identity than Dutch is. But Obviously no one who currently lives in that (former) language zone identifies as Dutch. Just as how no one in the Low Countries identifies as German.

You could do a version of this type of thing, but with the Dutch Empire instead. So, I'd assume it starting from 1642 or something, where the Dutch beat off the Spanish from their short lived holdings in Chile and keep bits of Chile. Then, they'd have to keep Dutch Brazil (New Holland), an idea I'm rather fond of, and after the Napoleonic Wars keep South Africa and keep New Amsterdam after the British try to take it in 1673. The GWC does not fail and die, but instead manages things efficiently. I'd also assume that the Dutch would colonise all or the majority of New Holland (the second New Holland, or Australia) and expand their influence throughout the whole East Indies, up the Malay Peninsula and probably into India. It would be a very interesting video to watch. Thank you for reading.

Okay, let’s not forget that France was a united nation since decades. Thus German states were often a pawn for the powerful France. However, the origin of German nationalism is on the one hand an academic and intellectual pride of great philosophers like Kant or poets like Goethe etc. And on the far more important other hand the common enemy France, especially in the wars of liberation against Napoleon. France wanted to spread the world with it's liberal values such as "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" and hypocritically occupied many German Territories. So, German nationalism is originally but partially an act of liberation. The later Prussian Reich's aim was surely to weaken France and it's dominant position within Europe, but even the Nazis didn’t want to raze France completely out.

You should try a benelux country. While their ambitions themselves arent much, their perfect scenario would have to include germany not going through the benelux in either world war, which IS interesting
@pahtar7189
@pahtar7189 Жыл бұрын
I like the notion of Benelux unifying and focusing on trade. They could do what Qatar is doing in our timeline, making itself an indispensable hub for commercial sea (and eventually air) traffic, shipbuilding, etc. In our timeline they have first, second, and fourth busiest ports in Europe, but if optimized they would also be the rail hub. With the Hague, they would eventually become effectively the capital of Europe, perhaps dominating it much as the Grand Duchy of Moscow came to dominate Russia and oversee a vast empire.

Or imagine if the United Kingdom of the Netherlands existed. They would probably let Germany go through their land though, potentially making WW1 significantly shorter.

The franco german rivalry did not start in 1871 but in the sixteen hundreds when the french kings started encroaching on ethnic german territory in order to get a border on the rhine as a "natural defense". Not that it ever helped them anyway. They had everything coming to them that happened in the 19th and 20th century. many times over.

WW1 German Army was probably the greatest land power since Rome. I would love to know what would have happened if they didn't fight everyone at once. 1v1 with any nation, Germany crushes them with ease. IDK why everyone talks about WW2 Germany. Not even close to ww1 power and leadership.
@SquidMonke4
@SquidMonke4 9 ай бұрын
Ya ww1 was very powerful. I wouldn’t say they were as strong as Rome as Rome was beyond all their rivals but Germany did really well. Their navy was on par with Britain and army bigger than the former largest army, France. But Europe is all about balance of power and so when one nation gets to powerful they team up on them as proven by France and of course Germany.

One part you left out was Russia granting Finland independence or even transferring it under German influence in this scenario. In our timeline Germany already had a plan with Finnish leaders to make a Hohenzoller prince the king of Finland, grossly deepening Germany's influence in Fennoscandia. This deal would most likely happen in this timeline as it was abandoned in our timeline due to Central powers losing the great war.

Now here's a question. Would Germanization be a worthwhile goal for this hypothetical "perfect' German Empire? While this was definatley the age of nationalism and national consolidation, we saw through the rest of the 20th century that that insistence only weakened nations where as nations who embraced democracy, plurality and diversity prospered. For example, think of how far Germany fell behind on the nuclear arms race because they drove nuclear scientists like Einstein out of the nation

I think one of the interesting concepts of an 'alternate WW1' would be if Germany marketed the war better to all those German-descended Americans in the Mid West, forcing Wilson to send aid to Germany instead of France and Britain. Or since you put the brakes on the naval buildup, if the two grandchildren of Queen Victoria (the Kaiser and the King) could have come together and avoided war with France and Russia by mere intimidation.
