If you allowed ground effect tunnels, a massive low diffuser, active suspension and active skirt control with some seriously clever skirt designs plus a closed cockpit the cars could gain as much as 10 sec a lap, no questions asked because you could get double the downforce easily with no drag increase just by using optimal tunnels and wings, enclosing the wheels and cockpit and running active aero and suspension and so on. The regulations are there to stop modern cars from hitting 450kph and cornering at speeds where a puncture could very well cause a death 30% of the time

For qualifying Barrichello had a 1m20.089 in 2004, compared to a 1m18.887 for Hamilton last year. For pure lap time, the modern cars are much quicker. Obviously the race lap times are a different story as today's cars don't have fuel stops and aren't replacing the power unit every race weekend so Barrichello's fastest race lap of 1m21.046 beats the 1m22.746 set in the race by Hamilton. Ofcourse give the 2004 car slick tyres and ultimate lap time might be closer. But at the same time if the F2004 needed to only run 3 engines a year and increase its weight to pass more stringent modern safety tests things would be significantly different so comparing across eras remains a nearly impossible task.

The grooved tyres they had at the time would have certainly slowed them down by a few seconds a lap. Because cars were on a whole lighter, running on heavy fuel would have meant worse relative performance at the start of the race also. What I'd be curious to see is how fast we could make a car by combining the best of both worlds; V10 engine, light car, slick tyres, modern day suspension and aero.

the F2004 with slotted slicks demands you be gentle and precise to extract the most performance out of them, but in the game or in real life. part of the reason we have normal slicks again is the cars are nowhere near as fast in the corners as the ones from this era, let alone in a straight line but, regardless of the tires a car that is fast down the straights is always going be that way.
@JohnnyC014 жыл бұрын
The 2004 cars were insanely fast. That's why they slowed them down. And that's why they switched from V10 to V8 ans later V6. Honda had over 1000 HP, BMW reving up to over 20k rpm. And the cars were perfectly designed for racing. The cars were going over 360 km/h. The record was 369 km/h I think.

That what F1 needs. Simply pure racing pace, no electronic aids such as DRS, KERS, ERS, ABS, Traction Control, ESC, MGU-K, MGU-H, etc. F1 2004 was defining golden era of F1. Awesome.

funnily enough out of all those things you called electronic aids only two of them is an aid which is traction control and abs. The 2004 had TC so idk how it was defining "golden era F1" with such driver aids you condemned. Keep on displaying your ignorance :)

I can officially tell you that you're wrong, Firstly because assuming they both have to follow the same rules the amount of fuel the F2004 would have to carry would be like 220 Litres, That nearly equals out the weight difference between the two cars, then lets look at lap times, the F2004 did a 1:45.5 at Spa in the race in low fuel, tyre degradation wasn't really a factor, the W11 did a 1:41.2 in qualifying, When they did the Barcelona slick tyre test in 2008 the cars gained 2 seconds from the slick tyres, that puts the F2004 around a 1:43.5, you're not going to gain 2 seconds from the small amount of race fuel the 2004 cars carried, last of all the F2004 was specifically made to run on Bridgestone tyres which have a completely different geometry to the current day Pirelli tyres.

You can see it's much much better though the slow corners because of the shorter wheelbase, and its SO much quicker off the start cos of the traction control. I'm pretty sure this is pretty realistic - an F2004 with slicks would probably beat todays cars. I do like the smaller sized F1 cars - obviously dirty air was still a huge problem back then, but at least they didnt take up half the track sometimes as the modern cars do. I am all for slowing the cars down a little though, taking some downforce off, if it improves the racing.
