My scenario would be a personal union between France and Spain while the HRE gives territory to France and Spain and Brtitain gives France some colonies.

My dad was a soldier during the war, He was based in the northern mountains of Iraq where he saw and fought the poorly equipped and trained Iranian infantry, Not to mention half a dozen where captured begging for mercy. Also the interrogation was pretty severe as Iraq (When Saddam was in power) had a strong interrogation system ranging from smashing fingers with hammer, electric bed frame and other. After the War was a draw, Saddam told his people that he Won the War.

It would be hard to see how terrorism against the US (and allied states) wouldn't escalate (since the oppressed would point the blame to those who support dictators), and how Syria and Iran wouldn't be taken over/overthrown. Maybe even Egypt, Yemen, Oman, Libya too. With that kind of power, the US and allies would have a lot of pressure to improve livelihoods and democracy, things few pre-Arab Spring governments were not interested in. Doubtful the Arab Spring would also happen, and if it did it would be hard to not see the US try to stop it in its tracks immediately. That raises the issue of extremism taking over the Arab Spring... like an Arab Spring, mujahideen and ISIS all rolled into one.

Though I was born in Oregon, I was a small child in Tehran. I remember my mothers penthouse shaking from far off explosions. This video gets a few things wrong. Iran's war against Iraq was largely a defensive war. Iraq invaded Iran first and thereafter everything Iran did was a matter of self defense. Iran never had any intention of imposing theocracy on Iraq. Their strategy was simply to take the fight to the enemy which is a legitimate self defensive tactic. Iran winning the war just means the war ends sooner than it does in our timeline. Instead of lasting 8 years an Iran victory may have shortened the war to only a year or two. The biggest out come of Iran winning the war means the Kurds don't die to Sadam's gas attacks because Sadam is militarily defeated by the Iranians. Another thing to consider is America actually supported both sides in the war. One cannot honestly talk about the Iran-Iraq war without bringing up the Iran Contra scandal. This is were Reagan sold arms to Iran in order to fund Contra terrorists in South America. This was a huge scandal and exposed the massive hypocrisy of the Reagan administration. Looking back Reagan really should have been impeached over this. The controversy of the Iran Contra scandal is part of what actually ended the war in our timeline. Both sides understood they were being manipulated into war for US profit so they stopped fighting. It was one of the most blatant cases of war profiteering in history. Fund both sides, divide and conquer. That has been US middle East policy for the last 40 years.

Saddam, feeling threatened, found the perfect time to attack, and that was in the 80's. I disagree with that move because it was very short-sighted, he didn't think what will happen next. He should have just built a huge wall and separated us from Iran. However, when Iraqi forces fell back in 1982, Saddam offered Iran a truce, and he offered $80 Billion in war reparations. Khomeini said no, and insisted to carry on with the war. Most casualties took place in 82-88, mainly because Khomeini didn't mind sending young Iranian children running over landmines. Iran was incapable of continuing the war, but Khomeini insisted. Iran could have won this war, and gotten reparations and gone down in history as the good guys, but no, they decided to prolong the conflict 6 more years just because Khomeini's ego was too big to be shattered. Oh and if Iran won, it would have been disaster, I cannot imagine the massacres that will happen in Iraq. And we're talking on a much bigger scale than the Kurds. It's just silly to mention them. At Basra, for example, the Iranians with 90,000 infantry and 200 tanks broke through 5 out of 6 Iraqi defensive lines manned by 200,000 troops backed by 3,000 tanks and masses of artillery firing chemical weapons before being halted at the last line. However, these fortifications worked as it allowed the Iraqis to apply their massive advantage in firepower and minimize their total lack of tactics. On the offensive, the general drafted plans which troops rehearsed extensively before an operation, in which their every action was dictated by a set scheme. The Iraqi generals were well aware that the moment things deviated from their plan their army would fall apart so they restricted any operations to less then two days, about the time they felt comfortable with before chaos started setting in. The Iraqi generals knew their army completely lacked the skills for actual maneuver warfare, so after the initial disasters they simply tried it.
