the best advice anyone starting out in life could hear. i went to the Naval Academy, hated it, wanted to quit, pressured by father to stay, was Naval Office, hated it, led me to being a government contractor, hated it, led me to sales, hated it. now 62, game over and it all sucked just because i didn't have the courage to ignore "what i was supposed to do". once you get here you find it is over in the blink of an eye. seems like a long way off when you're 20, when you're 60 you're like what happened, where did it go, feels like you just got started and bam here you are, done.

Wow, that is pretty powerful what you are saying my friend. That in itself takes a lot of courage! Do you realize that? It is one of the reasons why it can be hard to recognize; what true courage is and which steps to take. Keep moving forward IS courage. If you're willing to take my proven advice in the matter: learn to observe without judgment first. Try to learn something new every day. Then act on 1. what you really want and 2. where you are asked to act upon. Say yes! This way your courage will enhance/grow but foremost you will come to know what is real and what is true. This is THE insight which will set you free. You're just here to learn to play the game man. It's nothing more and nothing less than that, so keep your chin up, imagine yourself full of strength and I promise you'll live a happy life. You - the being who you really are - can't be harmed in no way possible.

Intuitively I feel that what you say is true, but most people fail to implement the trick in their favour because they are severely hindered by limiting beliefs lodged in their subconscious mind. In the vast majority of cases, these beliefs result from negative, abusive or traumatic experiences endured in childhood, adolescence or even early adulthood. Therefore, anyone who is truly serious about learning to create the reality they desire must do their utmost to overcome or transcend whatever undesirable beliefs that are holding them back. Failure to do so will doom them to lifelong suffering, limitation and frustration.

Peace, happiness, mountains, swimming in waterfalls anytime I want, creating my art in seclusion, teaching art, a man who loves me, a child who is quickly climbing to a great career. Love. My own acreage to walk around nude if I wanna and dance in the moonlight to a never-ending soundtrack. Money has never been a priority. I read that if you make $100,000+ you are comfortable. We are well above that already, depending on my art/craft sales. We are frugal. I don't spend money because I already have all I need. Good future. Simple as that. Glad I listened to Mr. Watts all those years ago. It hasn't been easy and we've had to start from scratch once, but, if I can do it, you can, too. Wishing all happiness no matter what you want!

How did you end up doing that? Travelling the world I mean. Did you find a job that afforded the lifestyle?
@thisneurodiverselife8 жыл бұрын
G'day Graham, For me it was a process, it was a lot of work. I was not "The Lucky Guy" that a great lifestyle/ opportunity just fell in my lap. My wife and I moved away from our home for work. We moved into remote Western Australia and worked ridiculously hard. We earnt good cash but that was only one part of the story. The lifestyle choice to move away from family and friends, the chains that those people somehow have on you, stopping you from chasing the lifestyle that you want, was the one thing that changed the way we choose to live. We saved up every penny, and travelled the world on a budget. Travel is not expensive, you can do it cheaply, We did. (6 months, 37 countries and didn't work) When we returned to Australia, we were different people. We now wanted to work to travel, to explore, to really live. But how did I end up in Antarctica? Well the trade skills that I learnt when working in remote Western Australia were a great start, but they were only a start. The life skills I leant from travelling were the biggest part of getting the job in Antarctica. The ability to live in the most isolated and extreme place on earth with 13 other people for 12 months is a multi layered skill. You need to be a certain type of person to be able to handle it. Not everyone can do it. You need to go through a pretty hard core selection centre, which many people actually can not handle and bail with out even making it through. Sorry I think I have babbled on a little bit. If you have any questions please asked. You can follow my adventure on my channel and see what it is like in Antarctica and the way that we choose to live our lives. One Life, One Search, Peace Out, Shane.

Towards the critics of this message, as mentioned your intrinsic motivation is regarded higher by Alan than your extrinsic which is simply the need for money. Following your bliss (what you love and are talented at) can reap at least an income that is good enough for that roof over your head. If you can put love into your thing (your product or service) rather than simply try to do what is expected, that gives you much more power. The lucky ones know what that thing is when they are very young, but it takes a lot of experience and a conscious and critical mind. Not knowing better, I followed the "money IS an object" idea instead, prioritizing my chance of finding a job and wound up with an unfitting job that at best would have me become a mediocre employee and at worst would get me fired too soon. So that doctrine is actually, paradoxically, dangerous to your income. Besides most people don't need half as much money as they think, they just need to stop wasting it.

"What do you desire?" Is a great way to start digging yourself out of the hole that find ourselves in. I grew up in a time when this must have been a prevalent philosophy at my primary school, as a result I had little grounding in any subject that I didn't enjoy or wasn't good at. My only abilities were in drama, literature and art. Those are the things I would have pursued. I ended up working as a designer so, in a way, I got to spend all my time doing something I loved and getting paid for it for an average wage. The work itself was enjoyable but the people I did the work for sometimes took all the joy out of the work and out of the workplace. So, even if we can follow our heart with our jobs, often we are still coerced to do things we don't want to do for people we don't like.

Maybe you need to spent some time alone to figure that out. That's how I found my passion.
@Anthony-jt2kh8 жыл бұрын
Think about what you really enjoy doing, then think about something your passionate about or that if you had the chance you would be. You might be thinking well I'm not too passionate about anything because ive wasted all my talents and interests in an office, but just take a minute and really think of that one thing or several that just excite you and gain your interest above all other things. For example I love skiing, and I want to fly planes, now I already do one of those things quite frequently and maybe one day I will become a pilot but who knows. The most important thing is to believe in yourself, and stop trying to make people believe your the person that your not. Be who you want to be. Confidence is key.

There's no point in looking at KZbin comments. I found this video thinking many people will look at this and change their ways when in reality a lot of these comments are people bashing something and trying to make a positive into a negative. Those people will forever be cursed by the hate they throw

Because the comments are reality. This is the worst advice you can give someone. Because there are thousands of failures that stem from this kind of advice.

No you can't, life doesn't work like this. Working and doing boring shit isn't a new phenomenon created by evil greedy capitalists that want to exploit people. Humans have been working day in day out for their whole lives since the dawn of our existence. This has probably been the best time in human existence to live.

+King Barry Scott you see, it is so incredibly simple I'm sure you can't even believe it hence why you are responding to this mans comment. However, I swear to God that it is this simple. Ask yourself "what do I desire" and please pursue that with fiery passion and forget the money, then you will find its simplicity.

I'm a Music Producer (at least I tend to be), and after I've turned 18 and needed to make a living myself, the passion for music has been fading a lot ever since, I've started loosing it and not enjoying it the same as I used to, stopped working so much on my songs, even though I'm better now and I could do so much more, I'm working at Amazon which eats 5 complete days a week, and I don't have much time left for my passion, at Amazon I'm just a robot for 12 hours a day so I need to think about anything to be human at least with my mind, what's left of it, so I usually make a lot of ideas of songs and melody lines, and when I come home, I think there's just too much stress that my time for music is limited, and I rush things, and there's no good result, and that's just worse for my moral situation. If I keep doing this, I think I'll end up in depression seeing that I keep failing. When I started living by my own, I've understood how everything works, and I started hating the money concept even more, because money makes everything fake, starting with people acting fake when it comes to money. I've started hating music because I have to make money out of it, but I see all my friends and family craving for them and I think that's why I keep doing it, to make them happy, because I'm not really. I used to have true emotions and be very joyful when I saw people appreciating my creations, but now I'm just checking my distributors everyday to see how much earnings there are. Money is what's wrong with this world, in my pov, but still, not much would work without money in this system, people wouldn't just volunteer working in factories and gathering supplies for the lazy ones. All that being said, I really see a world without money, and I've always seen further, and I've seen lots of beautiful things where there were no money involved, and one day I promise to myself that I will leave everything behind and just go free for once in this life, making my own path and live the way I want. I'm a true lover of the survival concept, that makes me think we should really know how to survive out of this system where money is what we live for. I hope I've changed some minds with my story, and if you want to join me in the adventure in a few years, feel free to do so. Oh, and I hate when I see people being so happy with the situations and embracing this system we live in. No, I'm not insane. I'm just being able to see beyond what I see. 🙃

real talk man, i'm an emcee at heart, saved me from alot of shit nd made me see the better things in life with music but in same situation stuck at work doing the same shit not happy and slowly stopped writing and rapping i feeel this comment hard thinking of just quitting in a month or two sick of feeling like a robot and stuck in the same cycle of going home then waking up next to the same shit i honestly believer it programs your mind a certain way that you don't know until after a year of working where you can see what the cycles done, keep chasing the dream.

I first heard a bit of this from a logic song and it was so damn true and eye opening. I didn't what it was at first so I had to keep listening to the part of the song and searching what Alan Watts said until I found this. I was a teenager when I heard this, well I still am, I'm only 15 but since then I've just been doing what I love, trying to follow my dreams and expand my knowledge, and just having a trip on the way there. I hope whoever reads does the same, and have a good on the way to your journey

@sisophous8 жыл бұрын
This is very interesting and thought provoking. I think the common link here is the vast majority of us would like a stress free lifestyle. After all, most people do not like to be put under pressure or have their backs against the wall. The problem with Alan Watts speech is when you run out of money it forces you to do things you do not like just to earn a living. Only a few are lucky to find something which is fulfilling, supports them financially and brings enjoyment. Mr. Watts is trying to tell us that life is short and to not go into fields that make you unhappy. He is also speaking from a point late in life and trying to persuade young people not to make the mistake of following the traditional path and end up regretting.

I guess I got lucky. I was bone idle in school (couldn't see the point) and I left at age 15 with zero quals. I found a job as an apprentice electrician and, to my surprise, LOVED it! Went to college and got some quals and later I decided that I wanted to become a teacher. Went and trained for that (took four years) and did teaching for 23 years. LOVED it! I retired from teaching and went back into the electrical trade, where I still am. I am 73 years old next month and I have had the good fortune to work in two quite different professions, and to love them both!

Think its a bit easier on you ( if you want to be in control of the material gain game): To think of money like energy storing units.You expend your energy and its stored on paper simply so you can travel easier with stored time/energy units. At the end of your total time though you cant take those slips with you and you cant buy love on the journey, so prioritize your time and do what you love. Also, the most enriched person is the one who knows that they have enough. Thats the end of storage and any care for it, let go of the banks (excuse the pun) become the river of life, stop digging in,share your love, it costs you nothing. Do what you would love to do right now.
