2021, still finding this. I have done mostly hard-surface animation (machinery), but starting to dive into more animal work, and this was a great explanation of what's in CAT. Much appreciated!

Awesome video! You have completely changed the way I look at CAT. I tried using it about 7-8 years ago, encountered bunch of bugs so I stuck with bones and biped. I will definitely give it a second look. The problem is to find good in depth tutorials for CAT, perhaps you know of some?

Thank you Expod. And Thank you for your pledge as well, however, I don't ask for money from people who don't have money to give. Actually I don't ask for money at all, I am just glad for any kind of support. So keep your Patreon pledge for yourself by all means. There are ways how to support the channel even without any money. Sharing the videos is a huge help, especially on some smaller sites/forums that I will not get to. Or even just liking or commenting helps to promote the video more because of the KZbin algorithm. Spreading the word in any way is a huge help :) Thank You and I am glad you like the videos. I am not planning to stop any time soon, however I am really busy recently, so trying to do the best I can with the production. Cheers.

Thanks for this, I've not really used CAT that much, there always seemed to be reports of bugs in previous versions which put me off a little. I need to dig deeper into it, I particularly like the procedural animation. The biggest problem with Max seems to be the character animation options are completely separate, CAT, Biped/CS, that Populate Crowd system...
6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Well, I don't understand why there is a general consensus that CAT has a lot of bugs or is unstable. There are few minor things that sometimes come up, but that's is the same with Max in general as well. 3Ds Max has a lot of bugs too, but nothing that will prevent you from doing the work. Same with CAT. About the separation. The way to look at it is, that each of these animation systems are just the UI extension of the original Max bones. CAT basically just give you new features and options, and new UI elements, to deal with the same stuff you would do with regular Max bones as well for example. It's a plugin basically.
@JudgeMinty6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah maybe it's just become this myth that has stuck with it. CAT certainly seems the most flexible - for the amount of development time spent on Populate, it's pretty limited and a bit disappointing compared to what was promised.

I've been working with CAT for quite a while now and I wouldn't use it for complex rigs, although if you need something quick it's a nice tool (f.e. when you're doing animations in a gamejam) it has its problems though, I still haven't managed to successfully export rigs, so you can't really make animations for f.e. sketchfab

Beautifully presented, styled and put together video. May I ask what software you used to put it together? I have used Vegas for video editing in the past but I could imagine putting this together in Vegas would take hours, with all the text keyframing and little touches. I have to put together some promo videos soon using clips with animated text, and trying to decide which is best/faster software combination to do this with.

Awesome videos! I just came across your channel today, and I can't believe that such a useful tool has been sitting in Max this entire time (I usually just use standard bones, but will use CAT from now on). A few questions from your videos / and blog: 1) could you do a short video covering how you would use CAT for a weapon animation (since you mentioned it as an example)? I never really understood how to rig them with bones for game characters, and the idea of using CAT is even more confusing since it looks like one of the bones was detachable? 2) You mentioned in your blog post that CAT doesn't have squash and stretch functionality. Would that make building more complex / realistic rigs easier? I am thinking of the case where you model the skeletal structure of a character, then build muscles on top of that, and finally use the muscles to control the skin (all of the examples that I have seen used Maya though). Is that something that is feasible to do using CAT as the control rig? If so, could you do a video attaching a squash and stretch bone to a CAT rig (perhaps a bicep or something)? Anyway, I look forward to seeing more videos!
