What is a Chiller Economizer

I explain what a economizer is on a chiller. These components are used to improve efficiency by increasing subcooling and in some cases removing the flash gas.

On the Trane cvhe and cvhf, the economizer does not pull into the suction. It is pulling into either the inlet of the second stage wheel, or 3rd wheel. Depending on if it’s a cvhe or f. On the york screws, the economizer is ported about 1.3 or 1.4x of suction. No appreciable loss as you can introduce more gas after the suction portion without adding any more load to the motor.

In screw compressors the subcooler is connected to the eco port of te compressor, with a different (higher) pressure than suction pressure. (This is where the efficiency gain is). How is that for centrifugal compressors?

Same with a centrifugal, provided it has more than 1 stage. York yt and yk, as well as yz and YMC2 are only 1 stage of compression. However Trane uses multiple stages. And the york OM’s are multistage. Between 2 and 5 stages. Only seen 5 stage in the refineries. Usually for the PDU. Propane de asphalting unit. And they are almost always R-290 systems

What’s making the vapor rise to the top of the flash tank ?

Vapor is less dense than liquid. Vapor rises on top and the liquid collects in the bottom.

The condenser is sending liquid refrigerant to the flash tank how is that liquid being turned into a gas ? & does it has something to do with pressurization or expansion and how ?

Through a expansion valve. There is a expansion valve prior to the flash tank that creates the flash gas.

Yes. I think it’s due to a limitation of the digital inputs on the boards.

Is it ok to think chiller economisers are similar to hot gas bypass, by the concept of keeping a load on the chiller?
