My personal definition of minimalism is having enough without lack or burden. Your journey has been life changing for me. Now I understand why I seldom felt happy in my house and why other people’s homes felt so much more inviting. Thank you. And congratulations on your amazing journey.

Oh, I like that definition. Part of my personal trepidation with the term 'minimalism' is that many, many people live minimalistic but unvoluntarily. They just can't afford more, so your part with 'without lack or burden' sums that up pretty good!

I have most enjoyed the transformation of you! I discovered your channel several months ago, and watched older videos and how very hard you have worked. As someone in her 70's, I guess I have a different take on your huge undertaking, admiring all you've done. I look at it as becoming a beautiful, mature woman, living a life that blesses you and your family. There are several "minimalist "channels, and I find the homes sterile, uninviting. You have created a comfortable space for all of you to live in and call "home." Blessings to all of you.

When I learned about minimalism a few years ago my first thought was “that’s too extreme for me”. But it turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. You go through a process that changes your mindset, but like you said, when it comes to the actual stuff, you just make it your own. I’m “extreme” in some ways, “intentional” in others, and some areas are still a work in progress. I truly think (customised) minimalism could benefit anyone.

I really appreciated when you said you don’t ask family not to give gifts. My mother-in-laws love language is gifts, so I think it would be very unkind for me to tell her not to give my kids things, and I can see her joy in getting things for them. I see this as one of those areas where it’s not all about me, and if I’m a little bit stressed out by stuff for a few weeks around birthdays and holidays, that’s ok.

I liked how you used a tree to describe your minimalism. This past summer, I helped out my daughter by pruning back her overly large rhododendron bushes. I kept trimming here and there until there was a pleasing shape, removing the overgrown limbs that were too tall, too wide, too close to the house, oddly shaped, etc. It took all afternoon, because I wanted to be thoughtful about it. Although pruning left gaps here and there, I told my daughter that the bush would 'fill in' the gaps eventually. And within a month, the bush breathed a sigh of relief, and budded more flowers before Fall set in. A thing of beauty. All this to say, in our minimalism journey, it may take a while, but we need to prune and prune until our lives take a pleasing shape and the misshapen and odd segments are gone, and the flow is great, and we sigh with relief. Our gaps will fill in eventually, and we will be left with a thing of beauty.

Beautifully put. For me: I'd like to be able to travel away from home, for short or longer trips, without going out of my head completely and never having things ready on time and checking everything a hundred times and panicking and stressing. I love all the other aspects but I'm hoping one day to streamline my routine to a point which enables me to be able to take off and be fairly happy with the state of things at home because I didn't leave it to the last two days before the trip to completely spring clean the entire house - where I don't always feel like I've missed something in packing because I have my 'Travel List' (which is something I do actually have and just need to remember to use it) and I can quickly go through that and know it's all taken care off. Every time I go away and I have to dash back into the house a half dozen times and spend half the trip fretting over what I may have left behind and bang my shin and thump my thumb because I'm too stressed to watch what I'm doing - I pine for the day I may actually travel with at least 'some' ease.

Erica, you've done a great job with all that you have made decisions on these last 2 years. It's hard to get rid of sentimental things, but it does get easier and you go along. Your husband has really given up things that he would have kept before. I think he sees you doing that and he is taking the time to make the decision to part with things he would have kept before. Keep moving forward because being a minimalist has several meanings that you realize after you have de-cluttered. I think it's a constant thing that as you go along each day, you realize what you really need and what is just things we have but don't really need. Easier then to part with them. Keep moving forward. Thanks for sharing.

I´m still working on decluttering and paying down debt yet I have Christmas on the mind now and have been spending already on gifts and since I have not bought much Christmas stuff in years I have treated myself to some new things from Hobby Lobby and plan to get many new ornaments, etc, which doesn´t help my debt so it feels conflicting. I have been saying for years I´m going to start container gardening and have not. Watching yours grow I want to write it out, get enough potting soil and make it happen. Curating my closet is next on my list. I have gotten rid of a lot but SO much remains that I don´t wear. Your channel helps me a lot with my processes. I´m also starting on my office/craft room-it was mostly an office with the intent to be a craft room too-now I am ready to spend my winter in there and looking forward to getting items on hand for crafting-as budget friendly as possible-and I have to declutter to get that room where it needs to be and want to achieve it before winter. Thanks for what you do! I´m off to your next video.

What a great conversation….. and reflection. You are one of the few people I’ve watched that can articulate thought into meaningful words that make sense….. I have been watching your channel and a few other minimalism/decluttering channels for a few months. I find I learn something from all of them even though they aren't always relatable to me. This video just became my favorite so far. You explained your journey in such a way that I am excited to keep decluttering and not feeling like I have to part with things that I'm just not ready to part with. We, too, became debt free a few years ago and so I understand that feeling of not understanding how freeing something feels until you've worked hard to achieve it. Now I'm really looking forward to gaining more control of the "things" in my home. Thanks Erica!

I totally agree! Minimalism to me means focusing on things that I care about, and filtering out or lessoning my focus on things I do not. I have 3 things that I am totally ok with buying and adding to my home, but clothing is not something I care too much about so I only buy things when what I have wears out. I've sorted through what I own a few times and I am content with what I have now as I seem to get rid of less and less. Minimalism is so freeing. Gives me the ability to say 'No, I don't want/need that' and that is great.

I love how calm you are about gifts. I had no choice but to put my foot down to family members. Almost all my family members say their love language is gifts. But how is it loving when you know what you are giving is stressing out the receiver?? We asked for 3 yrs for gifts to be limited. The aunts/siblings got it and where ok with it after the 1st yr. And even said they enjoyed choosing smaller higher quality gifts that were more meaningful. The grandparents?? Whoo eee!! You would have thought we asked them to eat dog turds for dinner!! We finally reached a compromise. My sister suggested that as a family we only buy gifts for those under 18. The grandparents actually liked this idea. ( thank goodness!!). For adults we exchange ornaments or food gifts. I am a quilter and make most of our gifts. Since they agreed to limit christmas giving, I try to make them super nice gifts for birthdays and other holidays. (Mothers/fathers day, anniversary etc). Quilts, wall hangings, quilted baskets, books covers for the readers etc. They now know they can ask for a particular hand made gift and I will do my best to make it for them. Its not perfect. Our daughter still gets an overwhelming amount of gifts at christmas and birthdays. And I dont think that is going to change. But now we know its just what is hers, and I know after a few days on the living room floor it will move to her bedroom or play area.

But you explain this so well .As soon as my huge decluttering is done this week .I know I will feel better .I'm 54 and had three young children. I can understand a lot of this. The one issue is my daughter is spec needs but 27 and brings hoards of stuff in the house. It almost feels like she is defeating my hard work. My husband and I are looking to move in the near future and I definitely feel like I want to go more minimal for the move and for living in general. There are things which we love that won't be minimal like books, clothing and kitchen supplies, but in terms of how the house operates... everything needs a home. We currently do not have a home for everything. That much is our goal.

It is been so interesting watching your journey. Different from other minimalist people's journeys. It's good to see a different side. I love your definition of minimalism. It's not a one size fits all and you explain that so well. I've watched some people and I come away feeling guilty that I have too many things. Sometimes I've gone a little overboard on decluttering. I had three thermometers and thought I don't need three so I got rid of two and then the one I kept died on me. So I had to go buy a new one. How much space does a thermometer take up? So that's one instance where I overdid the decluttering and ended up spending more money. It made me take a step back and review what I was doing. So just keep sharing your life and you experiences, I know you've encouraged a lot of people. I enjoy these little chats with you. Thank you!

I'm excited to see the itty bitty changes that have already begun to embed themselves in the way I think and the way I act now. Your illustration about the tree made me laugh. I have been growing a dogwood tree and couldn't figure out why it got all kinds of branches and leaves but never a trunk! I found out this weekend that there are two types of dogwood. One is a tree and one is a shrub! I apparently have the shrub variety! I think God was making His point to me with my "shrub." I'm now working on the mental/emotion growth of the trunk in myself.

I think part of your happiness comes from Andy being home too. You're thriving! I agree, M is a tool...not a label. A verb not a noun. Ranger only cares about food and snuggles. Smart boy.

Would love to see some videos on you switching from some convenience food products to making your own. Nothing wrong with having the convenience stuff as well of course! I make my own big batch pancake/waffle mix and it saves me so much packaging (for example), home made taco seasoning etc. I’m always looking for more inspiration for stuff like that! Your journey has been so motivating for me

I’ve been slowly making those changes naturally. I noticed the other day. I make my own applesauce and started making bread. I walk out back and grab tomatoes and peppers to make with dinner. It’s been so enjoyable

Would love to see a video on ... What's next for you .... I have enjoyed watching your journey over the past 18-20 months (I found you right before the pandemic which gave me ideas to focus on while I was at home all the time).

This is the most insightful video I’ve seen about minimalism in a long time. Allowing family to speak the love language of gift giving is an “aha” for me. 🙏🏼

I actually don't think about minimalism or put myself in a category I just buy and do what I think my family needs or we love .. the gifts are gifts it's everyone's choice if they ask me what we want or need I will ask for what I think that we need or the children asked for.. I love your journey I enjoy your content and you inspire me.. keep up with what makes you happy
