Charista, we sorry to hear that. However, wearing a positioning orthotic and using electrical stimulation may help you avoid the positioning you are reporting. Try looking at the height of your foot rests too, this can cause premature positional changes if not set properly. Also, there is a great story of recovery from MS by Dr. Terry Wahls. If you haven't heard of her, maybe she can be a point of help and inspiration for you. - Dr Scott

I was diagnosed with drop foot in June 2020. I'm still completely numb down my right leg, foot and toes. I'm having severe bowel problems and noticed numbness in the saddle area as well. My Orthopedic Surgeon is performing a Coccygectomy but I believe I need decompression surgery as well.

After working on my knees and with legs pinched continuously for hours (kneeling in awkward ways) I was unable to lift my right foot off the ground. It has been a few weeks since then and my foot has improved. I am able to lift my foot off the ground, however I am unable to sustain much weight that presses against my foot. So my foot can lift, but it is very, very weak. I am not sure that all muscles are engaged when I’m trying to lift my foot. Also, periodically I feel an uncomfortable sensation in the lower front muscle of that same leg that feels like it’s pulsating, similar to a sleepy muscle, but not really tingly. I appreciate any insight you have to share with this situation I’m going through. Thank you!

Jivy, you are experiencing the typical compression signs. After sitting/kneeling for a long period of time, I have that same tingling/pulsing feeling in my feet. It should go away, but if not you need to see a neurologist. Definitely check out the beginning foot drop exercise video I made. It'll help you get on your way to recovery. Good luck! - Dr. Scott

Would the electrical stimulation device be any help for someone with footdrop and a contracted ankle? I was told it would not be helpful if her foot would not flex upward past 90 degrees.
@SaeboInc
@SaeboInc 4 жыл бұрын
I'm an endless optimist, and never say never. I wouldn't go with the rule of thumb that you have to have 90 degrees of motion, for the contracture could be caused by shortened tissue and not something like a misaligned or fused bone. I'd definitely give it a try. We have a 30-day money back guarantee in the US, so try it out and see if it works for you. www.saebo.com. - Dr Scott

Dr. Scott, My brother had a foot drop, it happened in Oct, 2017. The MRI was done and doctor said it is because of nerve compression. We live in Canada, we went to many doctors that are specilist for foot treatment. ONE of doctors said nothing is going to happen even the surgery is not going to help. we went to another doctor and he said there are 33% chance of improvement if surgery will be placed. The surgery was done in Oct 2018. There were no improvement whatsoever. It has been almost four years my brother is having this foot drop. Is there any hope if it can be fixed? we are very streesed and worried and my brother is only 40 yrs old.

Truthfully, I cannot give you a definitive answer. There are a lot of factors that play into someone's recovery. Have you had nerve conduction tests performed or had an EMG biofeedback test performed? That might help you figure out if signals can travel in the nerves and if there are signals that you just can't see visually...well, not yet. I'll keep my fingers crossed! - Dr. Scott Thompson, OTD

Both my feet are numb from. The top down into my toes, and I can't raise my toes or my foot upwards and it flops when I walk. I'm going to see a neurologist in two weeks, I have other symptoms now such as vertigo, chronic pain, and terrible fatigue and lethargy. I hope it's not MS, but it surely sounds like it.
@SaeboInc
@SaeboInc 3 жыл бұрын
Tim, that sounds like a tough ordeal. I'm sorry you have to go through that. I recommend that when you go to the neurologist, don't tell him you think it's MS, this might persuade him to think it is rather than deductive reasoning. I would also suggest trying out SaeboStim Pro. It has muscular and sensory electrical stimulation bulit in. Good luck! - Dr. Scott Thompson, OTD

Hi, I have got foot drop on my left foot. I'm a healthy individual with no history of surgery or any other medical condition. I had my covishield vaccination on June 12 2021 and got my pain in the knee next day . After a week time I got foot drop. What would be the reason for my foot drop ? I do foot drop exercise 4 hours a day. When will I recover . Any one pls comment if u know the reason for my foot drop condition.
@SaeboInc

Rahini, without a thorough neurological exam and a bunch of tests, I wouldn't be able to give you the answer you are looking for. However, nerves can be affected for many reasons and peripheral nerves recover slowly. Don't give up and keep doing your exercises. Seeking the advice or a 2nd opinion of a nerve specialist might give you some insight into your condition. Keep up the good work! - Dr. Scott Thompson, OTD

Can you get the Dorsiflexion back if you fractured the ankle some time ago? Or is it too late to rehab an issue like this?
@SaeboInc
@SaeboInc 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what happened post fracture during the healing phase and how much range of motion you have, or could achieve. It also depends on if you have the nerve innervation to control all the muscles you need for proper dorsiflexion. I suggest you contact a local orthopedic physical or occupational therapist to assess and give you your options. Good luck! - Dr. Scott

Dr. Scott is preparing a series of videos on drop foot, so hopefully there will be some useful information for you. If your ankle is contracted, and will not flex, you need to see a PT or OT or chiropractor to assist. You might also want to see a podiatrist for anything else wrong with your foot (calluses, toe nail issues, circulation issues, etc.). We wish you the best of luck in your recovery.

Can we feel numbness and loss of pain in foot drop
@SaeboInc
@SaeboInc 3 жыл бұрын
Depending on the cause of your foot drop, you may experience these secondary symptoms as well. Like I said in the video, the major cause of foot drop is compression of a nerve and that can limit the ability for the nerve to conduct signals to the brain, resulting in sensation loss. - Dr Scott

Great question, yes you can! If you are looking to exercise the muscles that help with drop foot, the SaeboStim Go/One can do that very easily. I have a video coming out soon showing how to properly place the SaeboStim One for foot drop. However, if you're wanting to walk and trigger electrical stimulation, I would suggest using the SaeboStim Pro which has NMES like the Stim Go/One but also many more features like the trigger button that allows you to control the stimulation. (saebo.com/shop/saebostim-pro). Best of luck with your recovery. - Dr Scott

Since everyone’s telling their story, I got foot drop from crossing my legs a few weeks ago now with no improvement. I can still walk fine (although I have fallen twice now cause of muscle weakness :/) and I can still lift my toes besides my big toe. Honestly, I’m not too worried about whether or not it goes away as long as it doesn’t get worse since it doesn’t really affect my life in a major way, but it definitely can be fairly annoying at times. Hope y’all recover!

@SaeboInc
@SaeboInc 3 жыл бұрын
Wiggling your toes can be helpful in determining if the muscles that cause drop foot are recovering. Try lifting your toes off the ground. Does the ball of your foot come off the ground a little or does the lateral side of your foot (pinky toe) kick out to the side? That would be a great sign. Try watching this movie where I share 5 easy tests for foot drop. kzbin.info/www/bejne/an66hq2poJipr5o - Dr Scott

Can a b12 deficiency contribute to foot drop? I developed drop foot at 17yr (currently 33). After a lot of tests, none of the Drs could figure out what caused it but they did find that my b12 was very low. Just curious if there is any possible connection.
@SaeboInc
@SaeboInc 3 жыл бұрын
According to a few studies I found, B12 deficiency has been correlated with neuropathy and noncompressive foot drop. Here's a clip from a medical research article about a 16-year-old female with foot drop: "Consider screening for causes of a noncompressive peroneal neuropathy including diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, vitamin B12 deficiency, alcohol abuse and systemic lupus erythematosus" (Evans, Sell, & Lewis, 2013). I can't tell you for certain if this was the cause or not, but I would definitely use this article and topic when consulting with a health professional about your foot drop. I hope you've had time to check out or trial our SaeboStep. Here's the playlist for your convenience. kzbin.info/aero/PLwv1EYCxN5zXKoYt8XOSY-7eZ7LnT7d_h - Dr Scott
