What Is Instagram Threads?! First Impressions & Big Questions!

I just want to see pictures from people I follow, in chronological order, as a priority. Threads app is slick but has no hashtags, no chronological order and pushes people I don't follow. I would love the old Instagram back, without having ads, sponsored posts and reels being 75% of what I'm forced to see. Threads is still better than Twitter, but that's not hard.

Tap the "instagram" logo at the top left of your feed and select 'following' and you can see everything in chronological order, without ads. I haven't scrolled the main feed for months now, I just see what I want - which is the same as you, posts from the people i actually follow.

Facebook Purity; I used FB without Purity the other day and the amount of garbage I get, almost none of it is relevant. Reels I don't care about or a sleuth of reels based off something I previously watched, recommended posts, suggested pages, ads, holy fuck. I don't know what the workaround is for Android or iOS

I’ve enjoyed my day exploring Threads. The best part for me is better engagement. I always struggled leaving comments on photos on IG, but enjoyed having conversations on Twitter. Now I can do both, in one place. For me, as of day 1, it’s an incredible tool for moving forward towards a new era of social media

I am really happy with what Vero does. I am so weary of yet another platform. I’ll wait a year or so and see how it’s looking. Maybe Meta will put IG to rest by then by just filling it with add content and make everyone want move to Threads. Then once Threads has reached the reach it wants, start adding the adds back into the feeds. So I am not going to be part of yet another game of them toying with us. I have social media fatigue. I don’t need anymore of it. I want less. Thanks for testing it out. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and keeping us updated on how it’s going. I’m sticking with KZbin as my favourite App.

Hey John, today morning I joined Threads, and yes as you say this is so much better than Instagram, I mean we are not just talking about creating a grid portfolio, but as an artist I have variety of ways in engaging with a nice community. Its fun, we can play art challenges and talk about anything under the sun. Engagement is more fun now, and seems less work. But to add to your last point - if they turn threads into an adverts space; then slowly the algorithms will affect and creators/artists will start losing interests. I am interested as long as Threads is a ad-free and algorithm free community! and let the creators of the app find other ways of making money!

They are waiting for more people to join to introduce ads. Their platform has about as much privacy as Facebook, since it's the same thing. And it is 100% algorithm based. There's no option to just see a feed for the people you follow.

I still think this should have just been a new tab option in Instagram which is text only. I also think it's stupid that followers don't pass over automatically. I'm sick of starting from zero, and essentially speaking to the void and hoping someone will eventually find me and listen.

I noticed that it is not safe to post photos on Threads. You can simply tap the 3 dots on the tap and you can save the photo. As an artist, anyone can simply grab my photos and claim it as theirs. With the technology today, there are apps to remove watermarks. So for me, it is better to post photos on Instagram than on Threads.

I think for photographers and filmmakers that just want to show their work and create multiple ways to connect then Threads is great. I don't think it will replace Instagram or Twitter. To your point it takes away the game of solving the Algorithim until they create an Algorithim for it. Definitely not like Vero where I believe it is truly social but from my experience on Vero I've connected with other Photographers. Thats nice and all but I'm still a business. Hopefully, threads will allow the opportunity to be spotted by more clients.

FYI if you’re on iOS 17 beta 3 Threads will crash every time you try to add a photo to a new thread. So much for trying it out!!!

Vero is stronger for images and static communities threads is like Twitter so great for ongoing broad conversations and people passing through.

Hey Johnny, a genuine question. Knowing that Meta didn't even try (nor have plans) to launch it in the EU and knowing the reasons for that (a massive personal data harvesting going on on the app that is in no way compatible with any sensible data protection measures - the US and UK do not have such measures at all as far as I'm concerned), doesn't that bother you? Isn't that something worth a mention? Also curious about your thought about it not being available in the EU. Will this make Instagram more focused on that market? I think the data concerns are a personal thing, for me that ship sailed when I signed up to facebook all those years ago. The EU is a very important market for them I can't imagine then ignoring it for a long time.

Not even close, Twitter has perfected this type of platform and it’s not going anywhere. Twitter is way easier to use, it has a media category so you can just see the tweets with pictures and videos. Threads is very basic and it would have to change a lot to become 10% of what Twitter is

What is Threads? Just another data mining operation by Meta / Facebook to collect your personal data and sell it to third parties. Did you notice that you have to agree to share Health and Fitness data with them in order to be able to use the app? Why would they need your health and fitness data? There is a reason that Threads is not allowed in the EU where privacy laws are strong.

Instagram is an absolute nightmare when following people. I'm on Instagram but even to this day I hate how you can't follow more than 7,500 people. On Twitter you can go over that if you have enough Twitter followers one time I found a Twitter user who is following 1.2M people.

Was wondering when this would come out. It does remind me of early Twitter and early Instagram. I am actually suprised that some of the features I think are valuable are not available. Or maybe I'm just not finding them. IG lets you edit posts so I was hoping Threads would as well. Tested and didn't find that option. The search feature is kind of pathetic, but that may be because it is still only a few hours old. It may end up going the way of my Vero account. Once in a while check in because I prefer to use my laptop for reasons not worth going into. Maybe someone will come up with a hack like they did with IG or Meta will allow it. Like they eventually did with IG

I think I can answer the question of whether Meta sees Threads as a replacement for or a side-kick of IG...it's likely the former. Sustaining two codebases is expensive and would only be done if absolutely necessary. This is a typical cycle for technology platforms...introducing something sufficiently different to end-of-life a previous platform. Meta is looking for the next big thing which is typically positioned as a replacement for the previous big thing - IG has had so many issues and has fallen behind in a lot of ways...it's time for Meta to move on.

Nice video Johnny. My favorite part of Instagram is all the local photographers I interact with daily through posts and DMs. Threads feels very disjointed to me without a sense of community yet. I'm hoping they can build a Facebook groups level of interaction into threads.
