@davidtucker94983 жыл бұрын
Did it though? Did it cause more damage than the threat itself? I for one don't think it did. McCarthy's mistake was focusing on Soviet infiltration of our government, which he did a somewhat good job at addressing, or at least shaming the Democrats into better policing their own, but the KGB's primary focus was in infiltrating and subverting American institutions like colleges and the media. They were playing the long game, and we are just now reaping the benefits of their work.

They was a number of decision making people who calculated that it was the right thing to do because in the end more American would survive from all the nuclear bombs going off then soviets and Kennedy refused.. going from a defensive on the offensive was no big deal or just a "small threat" because they gave people a hard time? huh? 🫤

My father was in high school from 1948 to 1952. (Back in the days when high schools were commonly named for iconic American presidents. My father attended Thomas Jefferson High School. Coincidentally, my mother attended James Madison High School.) I didn't think of it at the time, but later I wondered if the teacher who made that apparently memorable remark to his or her impressionable students had previously been required to take a "loyalty oath" and feared the possibility of losing his or her job should he or she describe U.S. power and prestige as anything less than suggested in the quote, and then being blacklisted.

This video has some historical errors. First, the house continued to investigate "unamerican activities" well into the 70s long after McCarthy was censured. Second, the blacklist also outlived McCarthy, not really fully ending until early to mid 60s. Finally, a sin of omission. Democrats participated in this witch hunt, most notably Robert Kennedy who assisted McCarthy directly and JFK used the "soft on communism" accusation against Nixon in 1960. This was more widespread and deeper than this video leads us to believe.

If you let them shake you down for 50,000 dollars they would take your name off the list. John Henry ran as union president of the radio actor's guild on an anti- AWARE platform. The anti-Communist push didn't come out of nowhere. 1) A high level official (Alger Hiss) was convicted in 1950 of perjury in connection with Soviet espionage. 2) The Soviets had developed a nuclear bomb by 1949 and it was learned that our nuclear program was honeycombed with Soviet spies (Rosenbergs, Greenglass, Gold, etc.) With the opening of some of the Soviet archives in the 90s plus the declassification of the Venona decrypts, it is now confirmed beyond any doubt that the CPUSA was funded by and was fully subservient to Moscow and that it had an underground apparatus dedicated to espionage. Over 300 Americans are now known to have been working for Soviet intelligence during the 1940s. Hiss was there representing the US at Yalta.
