What Is On My Wrist: 1978 R.C.N Tudor Submariner (Ref. 9401/0) "Hybrid Snowflake"

This 1978 Royal Canadian Navy issued Tudor Submariner is very rare and a specific variant that is rarely seen. One could argue that these particular "Mil Sub" variants of the Tudor 9401/0 non-date Submariner that were issued to the Royal Canadian Navy are one of the most interesting out of all the "Mil Subs" known to exist. These specific 9401/0's possess a dial that is very similar to matte Tudor 9401/0's with the standard dial meaning the dial maintains the typical triangular lume plot at 12, rectangular plots at the “3-6-9” o'clock positions and circular lume plots for the other hour markers, The exciting thing is that these specific R.C.N Tudor 9401/0's are fitted with “snowflake” handsets. I bought this watch a few years old in 1978 for £250 pounds. Sent it to Rolex to get serviced and have dial and hands replaced as lume coming off them. Sold it ten years later when I married as needed the money in 1989 for exactly what I paid for it. So wish I had kept it !

Fascinating bit of history. I owned a couple of Tudor snowflakes at various times in the past and thought I knew a fair bit about them. Just goes to show!

@@craftandtailored Sadly no. What happened was that in 1980 when I was just about to turn 18 I saw a Tudor snowflake submariner in a jewellers window along with a Rolex 5513. I knew I had to have one or the other. I also looked at an Omega speedmaster. I think the Rolex was £360, the speedmaster £300 and the Tudor £210. I had only just started work as an office 'junior grade'. My monthly take home pay at that time was around £350. After a couple of months I was able to buy the Tudor. It was a non date with a beautiful domed crystal. A couple of years later I sold it and bought a Rolex submariner date (£500). It was the first sapphire crystal model though it still had a matte dial. A couple of years later I sold the Rolex as I desperately wanted to buy a car. In '88 I bought another stainless steel Rolex submariner date for £1000. This one had the glossy dial with the applied indices. I remember at the time wondering that something was somehow different but I couldn't put my finger on it. It was much later that I realised that the glossy dial wasn't as attractive. I sold the 2nd Rolex in 2001. It was in 2005 that I was wandering around a boutique and saw a vintage Tudor snowflake submariner date. I bought it for £750. It was model 7021/0. I somehow got it into my head that there was little future with the watch as parts were fairly scarce, although it was in good working order. I sold it around 2008 for £1000. I bitterly regret selling all of them as they were amazing pieces.

@@craftandtailored yes and i am glad that tudor re issued the black bay in the hybrid configuration ( snow flake with round hour mrk ) that for me ended the speculation that that some one mixed different models to get that look. if you don.t mind where to you see the prince for that model ? no box hands dial all original ( rolex service insert ) mode 94010 and serial 88,,,,,,,,,,, i belive cal 2776 eta

I have been following you for a while, I first got introduced to you from Roman Sharf during one of your trade shows and youb had this watch, I thought it was a joke or a trick because I would have never guessed. I am surprised you never shared this with the community,, on the other hand, may be not because it will lead to a lot of madness! and to answer your speculation, Tudor do not seem to have this in their archive because during their archive series with Hodinkee, it was not there, unless they knew it was going to be used as an inspiration for the black bay

No. For a Tudor diver to be a snowflake sub, it has to have both the snowflake markers and snowflake handset. Nonetheless, you have a nice watch and should forever treasure it.
