you are a complete fool if you think that. Kasparov was a terrible sportsman, has often disrespected his opponents, and has even stormed off a tournament after he lost to a 12-year old. He didn't congratulate his young opponent, he didn't shake his hand and instead disappeared. That's the fella we are talking about here. It's refreshing to hear someone who knows history speaking about today's crisis in Ukraine and for the democratic world. I was born in 1951 and grew up listening to my parents, ants and uncles and family friends, most of whom actually fought in WW2, talk about their experiences and memories of those prewar and war time events and situations. I grew up listening to our mid century history from people who lived it. Today, many politicians, journalists and the public citizenry either don't know, or don't understand the seriousness of what happened and the parallels to that era. We cannot look forward and make the right decisions without understanding and examining our history.

One of the "elephants in the room" is that for several decades many international oligarchs have made huge profits by ignoring or capitalizing on Russia's internal corruption. Putin could operate with impunity as long as the cash was flowing. Our current international moral outrage seems somewhat hypocritical and duplicitous in that light. The common people of the planet have every right to me incensed. The oligarchs and national governments have been playing a high-stakes poker game with the well-being of millions of peoples lives. And now we ALL stand a chance at losing.

The people of Russia need to hold him accountable too. There are way more Russians than police forces to arrest them. At some point, it always happens when there are mass protests and police trying to crack down, they realize they are outnumbered and it's futile. It happened in the Arab Spring, and Russians can take a stand.
@hueypautonoman

That’s easier said than done. When every channel was showing an American police officer with his knee on a dying man’s neck, most Americans sat at home and didn’t go out to protest. And it wasn’t because they didn’t care. They have families and lives they don’t want to jeopardize. Now imagine the stakes are even higher like they are in Russia, where the police can pick you up, throw you in a hole and never even prosecute you. No one wants to be that person, and no one wants that for their family and loved ones. And don’t forget that the police, security and army are also Russian, so clearly not every citizen is against Putin. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but there are so many factors to consider.

Man, this was 4 days ago and it's like he dictated how NATO should respond, and that's how NATO is responding and it's working. Putin completely misjudged NATO unity. He misjudged Ukrainian courage and patriotism. He misjudged his ability to maintain the message at home. He's completely isolated. Even the Chinese have refused to come to his financial aid. Russian planes can't go anywhere except China & NK. Nobody's flying in. They lost access to SWIFT, so no import/export. Assets frozen all over the place. And now Russia is going to be devastated, economically, by his folly. Russian citizens who have no idea what's going on, are going to suffer for years, possibly decades, from the economic ruin he's going to inflict on them.

Thank you to Mr. Kasparov. Your last thought mimicked my own about China putting all of this in the context of Taiwan. I may be overly cynical but a part of me cannot seem to shake the thought of China even launching the first missile(s) in a way that the world THINKS that it is from a Russian submarine... killing two birds with one nuclear strike.

As for Taiwan, I agree with you. I think Russia's decision to invade Ukraine has changed the world in ways we have not yet begun to concieve and the actions taken in the next few weeks will define the 21st century. On the other hand, I don't think nuclear war is likely, esspecially not is the way you described. Even a small scale nuclear war would re-shape the world in ways that are entirely unpredictable. And for that reason, it would only make sense for China/Russia/America to use nukes in the event that their own destruction was guarenteed.

Do you not think he would have used them when he was faced with the reality of his defeat? These men are the ultimate sociopaths and psychopaths. If they can't have it, they'll destroy it to make sure nobody else can.
