I've never had as snappy of an experience out of a machine as when I was on Gentoo. Arch has come the closest. I switched to Arch because it's so close, and while generally using Gentoo was terrific, the updates could take ffe on my old core2duo. That was during the time when an update to kde's library meant /EVERYTHING/ kde had to be completely rebuilt from the top down(not sure if that's still the case). The last time I updated Gentoo, I had all of kde, the kernel, all of openoffice(before the libreoffice switch), and something else all piled on. I immediately started looking for a rolling release alternative to Gentoo without having to build from source, and fell on Arch. My boss even switched all of our workstations over to Arch.

I've installed gentoo once, i think it took me over 6 hours (lol). Its a good learning experience, but after a while i didnt have time or interest to continue using it. I would say gentoo is more for a linux hobbyists. In general people should stop thinking distros as trials that determite whether you are a experienced user or a noob, if anything that kind of attitude only makes you look inexperienced.

I've taken to describing Distros as "Prebuilt computers", where each one comes with its own unique hardware. Despite different components, each one shares the same type of components - motherboards, CPUs, RAM, Video Cards, etc, and you can more or less freely swap between them and get a system that could look like a prebuilt from somewhere else, or a system that's uniquely your own.
@tylerdean980
@tylerdean980 2 жыл бұрын
One thing people seem to not consider about minimalist distros is that you know every component of the system, because you put it there. If there’s a breakage, you likely know exactly what’s wrong or how to fix it. Whenever I’m using a preconfigured distro and something breaks I have to look up where a certain file is or whatever because it’s not where I would have put it.

In my experience with Linux so far, I found that the best distro is the one that works the best for the particular PC I'm installing it in. Not all distros come bundled with all the drivers needed for all PCs. Long story short: for my Asus Eee PC T91MT mini-laptop/tablet, BionicPup Puppy Linux works the best so far. For my Dell Latitude D630 laptop, Linux Mint works the best so far. and for my Dell Inspiron N4010 laptop, Lubuntu Linux works the best so far.

Debian can build from source, it's not something arch has over Debian. Arch has more bleeding edge packages that make it easier to build bleeding edge sources using the newest dependencies, but even this can be done on Debian, by compiling the bleeding edge dependencies outside the realm of the debian repository.

Yeah, I also used to hop around quite a few distros (I even used OpenBSD as my main OS for a while) before coming to the same conclusion as you did: a distro is what you make of it. I just use Debian Testing these days, since it takes the least amount of setup to get it working how I want it, and is reasonably up to date. Also, so much software that works right out of the box with little to no config needed, literally just invoking apt, the package manager. I might give Gentoo a spin inside a VM, though, if only for the learning experience.

"Linux is the only operating system to have distros" while it's workable as a simplification, illumos (the FOSS fork of OpenSolaris after Oracle closed the source of Solaris again) also has distros and the differences between illumos distros can actually be more significant than between Linux distros (e.g. only some illumos distros offer the "LX zones" capability to emulate Linux on the syscall level)

Either way, I have no dog in this fight since at the end of the day I would prefer to be running a complete, end-to-end developed operating system (like the BSDs) as opposed to a patchwork (which is fundamentally what Linux distros are especially once you start stepping out of the GNU consensus). You pick the one that's the most closely alligned with your core values. Do you want something that's easy to set up and use? Pick a distro that's known for that. Like many of the ubuntu spinoffs and of course ubuntu itself. The desktop is something you need to choose for yourself though. Go with mint or zorin if you want an easier transition from windows. Ubuntu isn't perfect but the chance to find a solution if you run into issues is the biggest with ubuntu and it's derivatives. If you're ready to tinker or to customize, you just start with the base. Choose from Arch (rolling release, newest software, more tinkering, more advanced, more complex installation), Debian (stable releases, beginner friendly set-up, lots of apps through package manager) or Fedora (newest software, rolling release available, moderatly difficult setup, less software available). If you have chosen the base, there plenty of distros and spinoffs that you can choose from. When it comes to picking a distro it's a matter of preference. Certain distro's offer a unique feature right out of the box. What I always do is read up about them and decide if these features are useful to me. If there are multiple distros that have interesting features, I figure out which features are the easiest to install on other distros. Sometimes it's as easy as adding a repository and installing the software, sometimes it's not. When I found a distro with unique features that I like, I check if they have the desktop environment I prefer. If they don't I usually look at other options first, but if it's slim pickings I just install the DE I prefer in the distro I want. It just takes a little more time to remove unwanted apps and stuff if I have to install it all by myself. I run Ubuntu 22.04 now. I almost always run a Debian based distro. It used to POP OS, but I wanted a stable distro for the long haul and since Ubuntu 22.04 is an LTS release I can configure it the way I want and keep it that way for years to come. I tried a lot of distros but I'm quite a normie user. So something with good documentation and beginner friendly is important to me.

I like Arch and its deivates bc I want to have the Noob-like comfort features with selective extensibility. I don't care about installing everything from scratch to have a minimal system, I want to start from a usable/familiar foundation and build upon that. That's also why I use a DE, not a WM. I don't want to spend my time on learning how to use multiple different concepts for example since I'm stuck with Windows for work anyway. I really enjoyed to use Debian and Arch. i'd installed Arch only because I was told it will make my 4gb RAM laptop run fast, so it did, yeah sure it's a rabbit hole, hours of reading/ also you need to learn how to manage and store your backups, how to do some shell scripting and store your configs, but it's cool. And I've never felt that computer may be fun without gaming, ricing or whatever observing cool programming languages by editing configs may be very entertaining for a lot of people also is a cool thing to figure out.

Excellent vid going to share it. Was debating/ considering going for gentoo but to be honest I don’t know if I want to invest the time since I have other things waiting for me like starting university in a few months and having to finish my c# and c courses still his argument is you only invest once and then get a perfect machine and only install what you want and don’t need to update your complete system like you do on fedora currently I can life update but every now en then I do a clean install because there is always something that breaks like last update signal messaging broke apparently I need flatpak version don’t really like that would prefer just regular install of package but since there’s is no other option for fedora 37

Not on the beard scale. More like on the eyebrow scale... Or Evil horns scale? Yea that works... Really BSD and Linux is like comparing a Fedora dork (Edit: I do not mean Fedora distro but the image of a Fedora hat "gentlemen") and someone broken in outer ways like banning hugs. But all in all very a like. All wrong and twisted ways wrong. Linux, BSD, Apple, Microsoft are all twisted and shit in there own ways. And hard to compare.

My only issue with Debian as a development and tinkering OS is the age of the packages. I often need to check out the latest features in different packages, and with Debian it's not that easy to do when there are dependencies. The main upside of the choice Debian made, is that debian is stable, so to me is the ideal server OS.
@MakeLinuxSimple
@MakeLinuxSimple 4 жыл бұрын
@@sanderd17 good point mate. Debian can be bleading edge but even if apt-listbugs apt-listchanges are used with sid there is no guarantee that system will be stable. and dealing with dependencies can be done but it may be a headache .So any true rolling release will be a better option then.

ok, I used Gentoo back in 2003-2008 and back then compilation was needed especially at the beginning that Gentoo was the only distro with the patches that help to compile everything into faster binaries. But today, the time invested ain't really worthy because how much cycles are you saving really in total, how much seconds, at this point is almost microptimizations what you can do with special purpose compilation. The real gain in speed comes from different algorithms in the software not in -O3 that is broken for a lot of packages. It sucks there are no more binhosts, for those with slow laptops because if you already have a fast computer to tackle the compiling you don't need binaries you can recompile every time. As a former Gentoo fan and I'm using it right now, but just for nostalgia, today I think the superior distro is NixOS hands down, then GUIX and for the security nerds. NixOS is the deal because you can reduce the impact of surprises of new versions and thus reduce downtimes. I mean Nix is what Portage wants to be when it grows up.

I went from Mandrake to Gentoo to Red Hat to Ubuntu and now I'm on Linux Mint. When Mint goes from Ubuntu base to Debian base for good that'll be my next switch. Might go back to Ubuntu but only the Mate or XFCE versions since base version Gnome stinks when they went 3.0 if something ever happens to Mint. Maybe I'll try something new, Fedora wasn't to bad when I tested it once. Wasn't perfect but seemed to work. Maybe I'll just go vanilla Debian. Who knows?

I recently switched to linux. I chose Ubuntu because it looked user-friendly enough for me. I will probably continue using it until I get accustomed to Linux itself then I'll probably consider installing Gentoo. I run a Thinkpad from 2015. It has been getting a little bit slow lately, not to mention that the included Network adapter has driver issues in windows. A few months ago, i decided to give Ubuntu a go with the live CD. I loved it, and thought it fit well with my needs. My computer ran incredibly and i decided to dual boot until i was ready to switch. Linux is great and I would recommend it to my colleagues.

I agree and here is my point of view. The thing that fascinates me in a OS/Distro is the challenge. So far for me Gentoo is being the best distro. But I also like Windows because for me the MS OS is the best OS for gaming, When I want to play games, I want to fix, discovery, complete the challenges of the games instead of the OS/Distro. I think that in the end of the day, they are just an "easy way" to manage, drive a bunch of electrons that change and fills pixels in a screen a lot of times per sec or vibrate the speakers coils in different frequencies generating sound, running all the way around between millions of transistors, capacitors, chips... , letting us to decide where those electrons will reach through a bunch of keys, mouse movements, IO and so on. Each one has your own taste. Nice video explanation.

after 5 months using manjaro xfce as a secondary system fro my laptop while main work I still do in Win, I could say, for daily routine except increasing the working speed I haven't any difference or difficulties to use linux (ryzen 5:2600 + 32gb ram + 2060super - on win vs ryzen 5:5500U + 8gb + Vega 8 - on linux). Maybe 5 years ago I tries Mint, but after a week I screw in up off, I really hated it, I couldn't do anything in it. Manjaro for me, as for noob in linux, is pretty simple distro and I feel comfort to use it (Fedora 36...nah, I use it a day, and every second I feel that I lost something important, some freedom, some flexibility to use)
