You need to set a fixed value for the fan speed. Otherwise you will get about the same result for every test since the only difference will be fan speed instead of showing the temperature difference that would've been reviled if the fan speed was fixed.

5:24 actual reason it was louder in pull config and push/pull config is the pull fan placement to the heatsink. That heatsink was not designed to have the pull fan that close to it. The intake side of the fan is so close to the heatsink that it makes turbulence. Some of Noctua's coolers and many other brands need a slight gap on the pull fan to avoid this added noise. Noctua even includes thicker corner fan pads in the box for the U14S and likely many other coolers I don't own. Always pay attention when you install any fan with the intake side close to something. If you hear a new noise, don't just slow your fan down, find a way to put a gap between the fan and the surface it is flush against. Crazy this is not talked about more in tech channels, pull fans are always vulnerable to weird additional noises from the fan blades simply being too close to an object.

To clarify, you mean the fan on the back side? I assume it's fine - perhaps even good, to use the slimmer pads on the regular configuration i.e. when there is a fan in the front?
@45eno8 күн бұрын
@@bennuwa yes the backside fan,pull fan can create noise when place too close to a surface. If you keep the fan rpm down low enough you can decrease the chance of hearing this droning noise. But then you are greatly limiting cooling performance as you likely could run your fans faster while still being quiet enough for your needs. The easiest way to test your fans is one at a time. You can buy a $10-15 fan tester that you can control the rpm while placing the fan near objects like the heatsink or case. Usually pulling a noisy suction fan out away from the object by 2-5mm is all it takes to eliminate that droning noise.

@@45eno Sorry, to clarify again - if I only use one fan - the normal supplied fan, in the front ("push"?), then it's better to use the slimmer pads I take it. As far as I understand, the thicker ones are just for the rear fan in a dual setup. Just to clarify my meaning
@45eno8 күн бұрын
@@bennuwa Yes, when you install a fan in a push or blowing onto a surface you normally don’t need any additional gap so the standard corner pads are all you need for vibration control. The results are probably because the dual fan setup was done last and the system was fully heat soaked from running longer. Ergo the system slowed some. I have a U14S on my Ryzen 7 5800X build and the Cinabench R23 points drop, compared with doing a test when the system is just started and cool, to when it's been running for hours and heat soaked. (all background programs closed, except security) Other's that have done these dual fan tests, on single tower coolers say the same thing, more noise, no increase in cooling. (In fact in a lot of test cases, the dual fans increased temps) the reason for that is, that not all fans are created equal. The exact same model of fan, can easily be plus or minus 100rpm from the specs, or even worse with cheaper fans. Even Noctua's newish and vaunted NH-U12A runs the same with just the front fan and no rear fan.... (but with less noise)Hmmm. I have enough experience with Noctua now, to know they make excellent fans, but like every other company, there is a lot of hype around the coolers themselves. For instance, the solder between the heat pipes and base should be visible but isn't. On the NH-D15S the cooling is so degraded by the single fan, you are better off getting a single tower solution. Either that or plan on the increased expense of adding a 120mm fan to the front tower on the D15S and running the middle fan in a push configuration on the second tower.

I have a SilentiumPC Spartan 5 cooling an i5-12600K. Ever since I mounted a 120mm Noctua Industrial 2000, the temps dropped by 10-15 degrees. So, it's the speed of the fans that makes the difference. By mounting two identical fans running at the same speed you'll get other advantages as well: the cooler will have a slightly better "reaction speed" (it will start cooling faster) and by forcing out the same volume of air that was pushed in the heatsink, it will help regulate the system's general airflow.

I see so many people mention louder noise when using push/pull or simply pull configs and 99% of people do not understand that pull fans have their fan blades too close to an object causing the noise. The advice I have seen is to simply lower your fan RPM to counter it. @@PatrickRennie Actually NOCTUA recommends using a faster fan in front and a slower one in the rear of this cooler. The fan that comes with the cooler has a max spinning rate of 1500 rpm. The regular 14mm fan that Noctua sells for the rear position tops at 1200 rpm so even when connected to the same plug, using the included power splitter, there will always be a 20% offset between the two fans speeds. That's how I use mine with a Ryzen 5 3600. Temps are better with 2 fans. I'm getting a max of 62.5° on a 40 minutes pass of Prime95 stress test and CPU fans run at max 1100 front/about 900 rear as that's the sweet spot for performance/noise. My case is a Fractal Design Meshify S2 with 2 14mm fans in the front, 1 14mm fan at the bottom as intake and one 14mm in the back as exhaust, so 6 14mm Noctua fans in all. With a single fan on the front of the CPU temperatures are higher of about 2 or 3 degrees than with 2 fans running at offset speeds as Noctua suggests. @vLarsn2 жыл бұрын
Ideally you want your fan to push air through the heatsink. You always want airflow to go in the same direction. So typically you'd have your front and bottom(if you have those) case fans blowing air into your case and your back and top case fans blowing air out of your case. Keeping the airflow in mind you have 3 configurations(as shown in the video): 1: Pushing air through the heatsink with one fan on the right side. (right=front side, left=back side) 2: Pulling air through the heatsink with one fan on the left side. 3. Two fans. Right side fan pushing and left side pulling air. Ranking the different configurations from best to worst it would be 3-1-2. Option 1 and 3 utilizes the cool air from the front and bottom case fans the best. I probably overexplained this a lot, but I hoped it helped.

Push & pull is only good on air flow restricted setups, for example through a radiator, or if the intake fan has dust filter on it. Otherwise it’s a waste of money and energy for negligible to straight up negative performance gain.

I find having a fan in pull config isn't desirable as it creates an annoying acoustic. I have a Deepcool AS500 plus and at full speed, the fans are only at 1200rpm but the rear fan creates that loud noise due to it trying to pull air through the heatsink. If I run the fan at max with just the front fan, I don't really hear it as much. This is why for intake fans, it's best to have a gap/space between any mesh panel and the front of the fan. If you put your hand directly in front of a spinning fan, you'll hear the difference as well.

I've tried both single fan configs. In my system, there's about 1c temp difference. Both are inaudible. vibration my guess is the electricity flowing through the cpu was effected by the vibration of the fan which in a way can be considered energy. or the electrical field generated by operating 2 fans created interference.
@buggerlugz67533 жыл бұрын
Could you do one with both fans blowing into the heat-sink, essentially forcing twice as much hot air out the sides of the sink? If your external rear fan blows into the case too, it'll exhaust the hotter air far better out the top of the case.
@Knottypine793 жыл бұрын
I don't think that would be very efficient. The idea is you want a steady flow of fresh air passing through your case and over your components. Facing all fans inwards except for the top wouldn't really be an ideal set up and would more or less create a windstorm inside your case. I believe the ideal set up would be having intakes on bottom and front, exhaust on rear and top. Facing two fans on a heatsink both exhausting inwards would not provide sufficient cooling over the fins.

Due to case restrictions, I have to use the smaller Noctua U9S. With the smaller 92mm fans, do you think that I might benefit more from two fans? The cooler came with one and it greatly reduced my CPU temps already, but I am wondering if it is more likely to make a difference because of fan size.
@45eno Жыл бұрын
Old post I know but yes two fans can help lower a few degrees. I have a U9S in a media pc running a 5800x (hot cpu) and I decided to put the extra fan on this setup for the slight cooling boost. I also have an almost identical media pc in the bedroom but with a 5700x and a D9L and single 92mm. I could add another 92mm fan to this tiny dual tower cooler but it won’t give me much more performance and I want the most silent bedroom setup.

Currently running Noctua NH-U14S. Both my last two builds, I've had the CPU fan at the rear of the cooler blowing forward. The top-rear case fan is reversed and pulls air in through a fine mesh filter on the outside (magnetic, can be removed and cleaned in seconds). A centrally mounted 14cm top fan is perfectly positioned to extract the current of warm air coming off the front of the cooler. BTW, The NH-U14S didn't actually improve temps from the Thermalright Ultra eXtreme 120 it replaced, but it is quieter. That rear case fan is a 12cm BeQuiet Silent Wings which has a circular duct shape onto which which I've mounted an 'eggbox' grille made of black card to effectively make it a 'vaneaxial' fan, the vanes straighten and direct the flow onto the NH-U14S's fan (they also prevent any weird harmonics which can arise when fans are effectively 'stacked' this way). So, the CPU is cooled directly by air pulled from outside the case. Works extremely well, keeps all cores in a CPU pulling 125+ watts (c. 220w at the wall) at 70° or less, most in the mid-60's (running Prime95 AVX, small FFT's). With real world tasks like x264/x265 encodes, the NH-U14S's fan and the BeQuiet case fan (slaved to it) never need to spin up much over 800 RPM to keep all cores at c. 60°. ETA >> basically this arrangement has the advantage of not using air already warmed up by the graphics card et al to cool the CPU - I've run MSI Combuster (overclocked GTX950) simultaneously with Prime95 (resulting in well over 300w at the wall) and it makes no difference to CPU temps (the air coming out of the top exhaust fan gets REALLY warm). There are also two front-mounted and one centre-bottom 12cm intake fans (all intake fans are filtered and the case overall is 'positive pressure').

Thanks for the test, but I will point out your mistakes. You need to show the fan rotation speed in the test; the final temperature and noise from the fan depend on this! Next, you connected the rear fan to the radiator without any gasket, which creates turbulence and causes more noise from the fan at the back! Included with the cooling kit, the Noctua comes with thick fan gaskets, specifically for installing it behind the radiator! You need to know this! By increasing the distance between the rear-mounted fan and the radiator, the noise from the fans is significantly less, and the system performance will be higher! Read the instructions for your cooling, which comes with the kit)
@mahmutdikcizgi97732 жыл бұрын
Whats the point of noting max temp, you should compare average since the purpose of the fans is to dissipate the condesated heat form the heatsink. The max temp is mainly related to your heatsink and its thermal conductivity. And please use prime95 small ffts for heat test, then you will notice the diffs.

Thanks for the well made video. But I have answers to your conclusions. Except the render difference. That would only be if temps were higher then less boost clock on cpu. 1.) The reason it was louder anytime you had the rear fan installed is due to the fan blades being to close to the heat sink. The fans motor mount arms place the fan blades enough distance away from the heat sink when in a push configuration but once the front of the fan is placed up close to the heat sink the audible noise occurs due to turbulence. Use the included thick bumpers that come in the box for the U14S which I own as well. I just made a quick video showing this. 2.) Even with the D15 the dual tower version you can use the fan and 4 ram sticks. Just clip the fan slightly higher. Have this setup running in a Corsair 4000D airflow case with Black D15 and two 150mm fans. RAM is Gskill FlareX with taller than low profile heat sinks. 3.)It’s actually a 150mm fan in a 140mm package. I run 3 of them on a D15 with a 5900x.

I don't think so. They're excellent fans regardless, and based on some feedback in the comments I'm getting the two fans should be on different headers. The rear fan should be spinning less than the front to create less turbulence within the fin stack by the sounds of it. I might revisit this test in the future because it sounds like there are a couple things I overlooked that I want to look into. And even if the performance is marginal, you still have a great fan that could be a case fan somewhere else in the build!

Front. Back.. what's the difference when we're talking about symmetrical heat sinks? My question is would double pull config work? Edit: maybe there is a baseline/norm that I'm not used to because I'm approaching my first pc build. Now judging by what you said, 'front' configuration insinuates pushing air through, which again, I think is a weird way to look at it; because looking at the top of the cooler, the heat sinks are symmetrical meaning pushing air through from either end would have similar results depending on where that air is being pushed. So im wondering would there be any benefit to doing a double pull config? And now ill finish the video hahahaha Edit # 2: again, when you refer to 'front/back' you're referring to air being pushed out of the front of the fan, meaning 'front' configuration puts the sink on the side of the fan pushing air. So again I wonder what dual 'back' configuration would yield. I belive you only did front/back configuration, as you call it, meaning both fans pushing air in the same direction, one pushing through heat sink and the other pulling. So try dual 'back' configuration as you so confusingly, I mean, aptly put it 🤣😉

Hey Benjamin, haha thanks for your play-by-play! I enjoyed reading it :P Yeah all tests were in a pull/pull configuration, drawing air from the front of the case and pulling it through the heatsink fans. I'd be curious to give your theory a try at some point in the future though! It's harder for me to make videos about this sort of stuff as it's my main editing rig (and only PC), but I'm definitely going to do some preliminary testing to see if it makes a difference.
