People who are ashamed of their nationality and who lack self respect and dignity identify themselves as DESI. Let me ask you Desi Daru or Daru ? It was a deeply insulting term coined in East Africa to address the indentured labour as 'country brutes'. Then it was meant to be one who has no english education. It became a preferred term liked by Pakistanis, Nepalis to identify themselves as It was not Indian yet could identify with the community. It became popular in UK in the 70s onwards once these moved to UK after Idi Amin kicked out them all. They anybody who did not like to identify themselves as Indians started using the term DESI.
