Keep in mind that these students were the top of their representative countries and were selected to be part of this program for that reason. They don't represent the average teenager of their country at the time. On the contrary people across the world are smarter now due to more accessible education. People who are ashamed of their nationality and who lack self respect and dignity identify themselves as DESI. Let me ask you Desi Daru or Daru ? It was a deeply insulting term coined in East Africa to address the indentured labour as 'country brutes'. Then it was meant to be one who has no english education. It became a preferred term liked by Pakistanis, Nepalis to identify themselves as It was not Indian yet could identify with the community. It became popular in UK in the 70s onwards once these moved to UK after Idi Amin kicked out them all. They anybody who did not like to identify themselves as Indians started using the term DESI. I don't believe that it was televised beyond 1959. It's possible that it was but hasn't been catalogued or archived, or maybe just hasn't been found yet. The host of the show died in 1961, and I don't know if it would have continued after that.
