I don't think the foods look like how we really do it here in Trinidad. Sorry her presentation of the foods like the marcaroni pie not supposed to fall apart like that, its curried goat and it not supposed to be black not to mention split peas what we call dhal, dhal never supposed to be grainy its supposed to be in a thick liquid. Sorry i guess she has her own way, but its definitely not like those dishes. U will taste the real flavours and see the real things here. 💜

@JesudeGannes3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, it doesn't look like the traditional versions of the dishes. Looks good though, but not really Trini. Same sentiments for part 1. The Ox Tail looks more like a take on Oxtail and Rice and peas, a Jamaican dish. On another side note, Curry stew is taking over, sadly.... the goat looks like curry stew goat, I was served this in a roti a few years ago, now I'm completely scarred. Excellent video though, and despite the inaccuracies, I absolutely support the fact that Lisa is representing the Red, White and Black all the way there. Great stuff!

Glad you enjoyed our sort of Trini food, but you need to actually try a real representation of our food if you enjoyed this. The rice with the coconut milk is called Pelau and the Split Peas and white rice, maybe basmati rice, the split peas is usually pureed with roasted geera, garlic, shadow-beni, a little saffron etc. It is called Dhal here in T&T, you can have it with Curry Duck, Curry Chicken, Curry Goat, Stew Chicken or to mix it up Curry-Stew. You must have habanero pepper/pepper sause with all dishes. Enjoy 🇹🇹

Hate to say it, but that food does not look like the good food from my native land. The curry goat looks more like it has been stewed and has practically no sauce. The oxtail also looks very dry. I have never seen macaroni pie done by pouring milk at the side like that and it looks more green than yellow, not to mention that the rice for pelau (peas and rice dish) was not washed or browned. Pigeon peas is definitely not garbanzo beans (chick peas), it is actually called granules by the Latin Americans. Trying to be kind, so I will stop here. Honestly, I really was so excited when I saw my homeland cuisine being featured, but became more and more disappointed as the video progressed. It just did not look like a good authentic representation of Trini cuisine.

5:10 Fun fact about "Solo" - the company was started in Trinidad before WW2 when its founder, a local of East Indian Muslim descent, bought a very small soft drink operation that bottled its drinks by hand (one every two minutes). During WW2 the founder bought up the stock of glass bottles from a closing down Canadian soft drink company called Solo, the bottles came with the iconic name and logo and bottle design. When he wanted to expand his company he applied for startup information and loans under his real name, Serjad Makmadeen, but was unsuccessful. He changed his name to Joseph Charles, reapplied and was successful. Thus we have Joseph Charles Bottling Works aka Solo, the premier soft drink company in Trinidad and Tobago.

Goat curry is not the same as Curry Goat - If one is representing authentic Trini culture, it is only respectful that one reefers to the aspect of that culture by the name that's used in that country. That's like saying a Steeldrum and a Steelpan is the same thing or Split peas soup is the same as Dahl, or Peas and Rice, and, Pelau is the same thing. The ingredients maybe the same , but the method and experience is different.

@@RockstarEater we seem to have some sort of rivalry with Guyana as it pertains to food lol. They say goat/ chicken curry while we trinis say curried goat/ chicken. Trinidad and Guyana are also very close geographically and in its ethnic makeup of the population. The main two races are of African or Indian descent (each at about 40% of the population with the difference being made up of other ethnicities.) this is unique to the Caribbean since trinidad and Guyana are the only two Caribbean countries where people of East Indian descent form such a large percentage of the population. as a result Afro and indo food has influenced our respective cuisines in a similar fashion

The outcry about this food not being authentic Trinidadian food is hilarious. It is no less authentic than Chinese food in America. (Next time you're in Beijing see if you get a fortune cookie with your meal). Mia Kitchen's food is inspired by Trinidad just like the Chinese American dishes are inspired by China. Being in America she has to adjust her menu to account for American tastes and cooking products. And of course she is free to experiment, expand the cuisine, and put her own spin on things. That's called growth. I love what she is doing and I will definitely try her cuisine whenever I am in her area.

That roti is a little offensive, but I appreciate that she's trying to share our cuisine. Rice and peas is more traditionally Jamaican. The split peas rice, is usually called Dhal and Rice and the dhal usually has a smother consistency. Normally its stewed oxtail instead of oxtail stew. Try the Red solo next time it's the best! Honestly when our borders open you should take a trip so many places you can try here that will just blow your mind.

@@RockstarEater well they're many different types, we have local, american, Italian Japanese etc. For local food: 1) doubles I highly recommend "Sauce" if you're in the city or the East of the country and "Debe Doubles" if you're in south. 2) Bake and Shark- definitely try it on the beach as opposed to anywhere else try Richard's or my personal favourite Uncle Sam's 3) Roti- now you can get roti with separate sides like potatoes and channa, pumpkin and mango with Parata (which is what I believe the person made at the restaurant you went to) or you can get it wrapped in a single ready to eat on the go form, I definitely recommend "Sherry's" in the West, "Wings" in the east and Highway Roti in Central 4) Pelau- this dish is somewhat similar to the rice and peas that she prepared in the video however when its traditionally done its usually done with meat and it is a much darker almost golden brown served with coleslaw or avocados, I personally prefer this home cooked rather than store bought but "El Pecos" has a good version, you can also get other local foods like calalloo, macaroni pie, curried chicken, stewed chicken, beef etc and fried plantains. -Dhal- any of the roti restaurants above should also serve this with rice and pumpkin and other sides, you should also try this with a spicy pepper sauce called "Mudda in law". Crab and Dumplings- a personal favorite, you will have to go to the sister Island Tobago to try this one, it's just really good comfort food for a day at the beach and most shops around the Store Bay( a popular beach) sells this I could honestly go on and on about our food because we have Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish influences as well for our food and it's really just a wonderful melting pot especially around holiday times like Easter, Divali and Christmas, but if you ever get the chance to visit, I wouldn't mind giving you a guided food tour with some friends that are real foodies too!

It might be a reflection of Trinidad and Tobago cuisines but not everyone, even Trinidadians themselves are challenged to produce dishes with excellent taste and textures that one would get in restaurants and homes prepared by chefs and experienced cooks..Our cuisine cannot be mastered if you've not being tutored by experienced cooks from a young age or taken cooking courses later on..Too many variations to name a best of the best! Everyone adds their unique blends or tweeks to dishes, so no two household in Trinidad and Tobago would the food taste the same! The majority of food preparation this restaurant does is not done that way in Trinidad and Tobago.. Kudos to them for the representative of Trinidad culture still..
