The automatics ran fine but I just never bonded with them - so they were traded in just a few years. The manuals were a Corolla, a Mazda 626, a Land Cruiser, a T100 and my current vehicle a 2023 MT Tacoma. The manual vehicles always got a name are are part of the family. I love them. Just bought, 08/21/2022, a new Tacoma 4x4 Off Road Manual, short bed, led lights, power adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, lane assist, locking rear end, Army Green. Been searching/pricing Tacoma trucks online for several months. Happened to luckily find this truck one day after it arrived at the dealer which another person had ordered and was unable to take delivery. I pull a small tear-drop camper we use for base camp set-up, then hike & wander on off-beaten roads in the back hills & mountains in North Georgia & North Carolina. Bought on the spot because I knew it wouldn't be on the lot for very long. One thing that totally surprised me, brand new pricing was a lot less than used. $38,900. Go figure. Tampa, FL area.

I think a manual actually makes offroading more difficult. Auto you just put it in s1 or s2.
@BrosFOURRSpeed2 ай бұрын
Just depends on your skill set and desired. I would have thought the same. But after off roading in a manual you find out you basically drive it with the clutch rather than the gas pedal. These can drive less than 1mph in 1 gear in 4 low. So you pretty much never stall.

Half a million Jihadi's can't be wrong; the man's transmission is the way to go. The forums are loaded with bitching and whining about the automatics, so I stayed away from Otto's transmissions. I had to order the truck to get a do-it-yourself transmission. Toyota's packages stink and I had to get the short bed to get the features I wanted, or buy a black or white truck. I've owned a black truck and won't do that again. And, I like the shorter wheelbase off road. I've always driven manuals. Much better speed control. I've never had to repair a manual transmission. I generally drive my cars 14-16 years before I hand them down, and I've also never replaced a clutch. I've never needed a "Crawl" feature. That's for people whose reach exceeds their grasp.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
I would disagree on the crawl feature. I've been offroading for several years and I think it's sweet to see that technology in the truck. I've used it before to see what the truck can do, but there have been times where it didn't help and I used my skills to get out or up an obstacle. But the manual is definitely fun for sure! I've seen them in more then just white/black, just like this one!

I never owned vehicles that weren’t standards until just a few years ago, but I’ve learned these last few years that (for me) automatic transmissions are perfect if you hate driving, so it’s nice to get some joy out of the necessary activities in life again. I bought a 2020 Manual Taco and I will not part with it until it dies. I recently found that 1st gear isn't necessary for daily driving unless I am going uphill. 2nd gear gives me more than enough get up and go. What's really interesting is that the truck seems to have an automatic downhill assist in 1st gear. Not sure what is going on. The most amazing thing is that classic Toyota reliability. I hit a deer ~3 months after I bought it ands tore up the front end and managed to drive 120 miles home with the only thing not functioning being the radar assisted cruise control. I do wish it could be faster but my current plan is to make mine into an overlander. Once it starts looking like it's ready to die, the plan is to strip it down and hoon the shit out of it. I call mine whistler because of how the hvac with warble occasionally. I want to turn it into a screamer XD

There’s a manual Tacoma trd off road 4x4 brand new near me that’sway under the cost of the automatics near me. (Would be saving about $7k). But I’ve never driven a manual before. Some of my friends say I’ll regret it and others say to get it. Would it be that hard to learn?

There is no ordering with Toyota. It's called a allocation. The dealer has to get a allocation for that specific spec'ed vehicle. I just got lucky since a local dealer just got a allocation for a LR TRD OR 6sp manual. Salesman texted me this morning asking if was something I would interested in. Hell yea, slapped down a $500 deposit. When I might actually see it is a whole different story. I still have and am keeping my 17 4R TRDP in cement, so it makes waiting a lot easier.

Had an 05 Tacoma 6 speed manual after 15yrs and 275k miles traded it in for a 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport manual. There’s only one type of Tacoma that should be bought and thats a manual! I just wish Toyota kept the 4.0L v6 thats still in the 4Runner and not the 3.5L. I can definitely tell the difference. Wish Toyota would put the 6 speed manual in the 4Runner that would be a lot of fun!

@@BrosFOURRSpeed i get it man, different strokes for different folks. I noticed with the auto, when taking off from a light, you had to lay on it hard in first and rev it out in first because if it goes into second it turns into a dog… then youre left hammering on it in second and doing this jump back into first where it gives another shift back into second.. so either hammer it in first which is not something I like doing at every light, or give it normal gas and shift into second and then get to 60 in 10 mins flat lol.. can I ask what you didn’t like about the standard shift? Long throws, don’t like it in stop and go, clutch feel?
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
@@doylee469 Hmm I don’t feel that way in the auto at all!!… but I didn’t like how first gear feels so slow and then into second it just doesn’t feel like the truck is moving. I guess the same way you feel in the auto, to me the auto is much quicker. And you can’t row through the gears in a truck like a car so it’s not a fast pace shifting sequence. I really thought about getting a manual Tacoma, but I think I’m fine with mine! Clutch feels fine and shifter is good even though it’s much longer, but I just couldn’t get up to speed in it like normal without punching it hard.

So with a manual, the following options are unavailable: Crawl control(for obvious reasons), Toyota Smart Key(touch handle to lock/unlock door), Push to start(gotta use a key like the old days), JBL Sound system. Manual pros: About $2,000usd cheaper(more cash to get those SICK new DRL’s) Better gearing(no need to tune your new truck either) Better MPG’s(depends on driver) Easier to maintain(clutch replacements) Can accommodate slightly larger tire size without the need to modify drivetrain components(regear.) More engaging to drive. A lot of R&D dollars are going into newer, better automatics whereas the manuals are kind of just... manuals. Nobody cares about them. Down the line when Toyota gives the new gen Tacoma an 8 speed auto or something, the 6 speed autos will become less desirable. Manual Tacoma’s however, as they are a dying breed, will demand a premium in the future market(in Doug Demuro voice) TRD Off Road vs TRD Sport in manual: No crawl control in Off Road, so the only benefit to getting an off road is the suspension, and rear locker. No hood scoop(50 extra horsepowers), black fender flares. If you prefer the look of the Sport(hood scoop, color matched fender flares) and are planning to modify in the future, it would behoove you to opt for the sport. I have a manual transmission, Army Green TRD 4X4 Sport being delivered to me in a matter of weeks.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
Those are good points on what's available and what's not. Just depends on what you want. I really wanted the crawl control which is why I had to get the auto. I'm sure you are right on the demand for the manuals, however I think the auto needs another gear, but they need to actually tune it for better ratios for the next generation. Hopefully they will listen to the buyers for that reason! I love the features that my offroad has, the hood and fenders are cosmetics so that's easy to change out. Congrats on the new purchase! I'm sure you will love the Tacoma!

Went back to a 6 speed manual in a 2012 Sonic ltz after 25 years of autos only, just because I wanted a DD and short commute and not drive my truck daily. If I didn’t have a 5,000 lb camper to pull a few times a year I would trade both vehicles for a manual Tacoma.....

of course you can do that low speed 1st gear because it has V6 engine it has a lot of power. Try to do that in 1.3 L engine with MT hehe you might stall easier. If a driver learns to drive a MT car with 1.3 L engine displacement and can drive slow like
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
I've never been in a manual truck before so it was cool to see how slow you can go without stalling! Depends on the car because a big V8 mustang has a pretty stiff clutch to get used to, but smaller engine cars do have lighter clutches that are easier to learn on!

I've been waiting since December for my manual Tacoma. Won't have it until June. They just don't allocate enough manuals to dealers... when I see one show up online in another state, it's gone within a couple days. To me, driving through economy-tuned transmission programming is endlessly frustrating. A manual completely eliminates the problem, reduces long-term costs, and is sooo much more satisfying to drive.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
I believe the wait time on the manuals! They are all pretty much special order trucks, I've only seen a handful on dealer lots that they ordered just to have! But I don't mind the auto, especially after re-gearing mine, it drives very smooth. The manual is cool though to see that Toyota still offers it!
@mikeburbank92513 жыл бұрын
I bought my truck new in 2017. It’s a TRD OR with a manual and 29k miles. If they only made the truck with an Auto, I probably still would have bought the truck, but I did specifically buy a manual Tacoma. I live in the Phoenix area but I don’t deal with commuter traffic. I think comparing stock to stock, the Auto gets slightly better MPG because it gets to 6th gear quicker and stays there. But I didn’t buy the truck for stellar MPG. LOL. Works great in off-road situations. I usually tool around in 2nd gear Low range and yeah, almost don’t need to use the clutch. But the control is very nice. Since you’ve upgraded your gears, I don’t know that I would make the switch to a manual.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
Honestly the auto Tacoma doesn't use 6th hardly ever! That's why I had to regear mine and now it stays in 5th and 6th way more! But yeah it was fun for sure! It would be hard for me to part with mine, but maybe one day I can pick up a manual for fun!
