This 2021 Toyota Tacoma has a litany of strange electrical issues. After posting about some on my social media many of you wanted a video detailing these problems. The first half of this video is problems that I brought up to the Toyota dealer but the second half is just my opinion on the truck so far. After a lot of research I have discovered that ALL of the issues I bring up are common Toyota Tacoma problems so I have no reason to believe this truck is a lemon. For those of you watching that are Toyota fans I hope this video doesn't rub you the wrong way. I still enjoy the truck and look forward to building it into a great trail rig!

Yeah buddy! Let's go back to carbs, analog auto trans, cassette (or 8-track!) AM/FM stereos, paper maps and all the rest of "it was so much better back then." And we can go back to 6 mpg out of a 350 cu in with a whopping 180hp, tons of emissions, winding cassettes on our ball point pens which we will have plenty of time to do because we are friggen lost because the paper map got torn in half from all the incorrect folding and the half we need flew out the window 3 days ago. I'm not even trying to allude to all tech being great (every manufacturer has their highs and lows) but in general, things today are much better than in the dark ages. And cars back in the 70's and 80's were actually much less reliable than today.

90’s and early 2000 Toyota trucks are the golden years of Toyota. So much money spent on development. My 96 4Runner that I bought in VA had all original parts. The 90's and 2000's were probably the best years for all makes. Sure the newer stuff has more power and funky gadgets, and more safety systems, but all that is an electrical disaster waiting to happen. I like the older vehicles for a simpler electrical system, where any system had it's own module and switches/sensors, most newer stuff has everything integrated into a body control module so when there is a failure it causes widespread problems.

Good detailed video advising us about issues. I've been reading about issues with the camera sensors having issues with things like dirt, water, getting out of adjustments ever since they started putting them on vehicles. Even worse when they stick them inside windshields which runs up the cost to replace a cracked windshield. They simply haven't made these reliable and trouble free and I wouldn't want them on my car or truck at all. Just another thing to drag you back and forth to the dealer.

Reliability of any vehicle brand will never be problem free, with those automatic push buttons!!! With Toyota vehicles you have 2 potential failures activating your 4x4 1. The Dial which is electronic 4x4 selector + electronic transfer case actuator. 2. Front axle disconnect actuator. 100% guarantee, if you enjoy crossing rivers with axle deep water - most likely your front axle disconnect will develop issues. I’m sure some will say they never had any failures, but water & electronics don’t mix! Manual 4x4 shifter & manual locking front hubs, =100% more reliable!! Manufacturers should not be building these crappy electronic push buttons - we want reliability & simplicity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy I found your video I’m in the process of getting a Tacoma TRD 4x4 and this vid was very helpful. I wanted this truck because the Ford Fusion I have isn’t the most reliable and wasn’t to sure if the Tacoma was reliable but heard many good reviews on it, and happy I got to see this side of it. I’m mostly going to be using it to go to the river and fish and kayak and bring all my equipment with me.

People really need to calm down with their brand loyalty. Every vehicle and every brand is fallible. When you choose a vehicle, you choose which issues affect you the least, or simply which one you like the most. That's great, but at least be honest with yourself. Damn bro, sorry to hear that you are having all those problems with your Tacoma. I have a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4 too and the only 2 problems that I have with it, is the seating position and the transmission shifting. Other than that it works really great, but you get used to the sitting position and the way the transmission shifts, well, at least I did. I hope Toyota takes care of your issues or exchanges your Tacoma for a new one since they really take care of their customers, specially since you made this video, good luck!!!.

Putting it in 4x4 - from my experience with my Tacoma - it's all about ensuring that there is no 'pre-load' or 'tension' or 'bind' in the driveline (shafts, axles, diff, etc) before you select 4high/low. That means wheels straight and settled out in neutral the best you can. I find the times I struggle is when there is a load on the driveline and it will struggle 'engaging.' It's nothing to do with leveling, IMO. Plus - and this has been true for any Toyota with electronic 4x4 actuation - "don't use it, you lose it," meaning if you go long intervals without turning that 4x4 knob, you'll find when you do need it, your actuator is cooked/gummed up and it won't activate. I turn mine on to 4high while rolling at least once per week (just cause), and I've never had problems. With your sensor issues - there is a recall on them and they need to be replaced or repaired - sounds like the rain cooked yours, so a new one under warranty is prob the way to go.

@@terryeverly5617 No I've engaged it upwards of 20degrees of incline/decline. Great video and very detailed. Thank you for all of this information. In summary, what I am hearing in this review and many others similar to this is that these are very reliable vehicles but have lots of “annoyances.” Given the price tag, those “annoyances” are kinda hard to justify. I drove a 98 for many years and was a great truck. However, I feel these trucks now days are a bit over priced for what you are getting. But the same is probably true for any new vehicle.

I agree- I find it funny how Toyota people just preach and preach about how reliable their trucks are- and how unreliable Land Rovers are- but I've found my 2003 Discovery (supposedly the worst year ever) to be trouble free for the most part and I wheel it hard. It's set up as an overland rig and it does just that! I think ALL vehicles have problems- and this proves it- even the "reliable" Toyotas- so buy something you love (used) and put in the effort (and money) to keep it running. It's a shame to see a brand new truck with this many issues- especially the "designed in" ones- but that's why I always buy used vehicles - most of the issues have forum solutions that are tried, tested and work!

Ravenol 75W is a direct Toyota LM fluid replacement, change oil, order off of Amazon, its 1 liter, has two tubes in bottle, pours right into transfer case. Shifts are night and day faster, and works every time. Makes a huge shift difference, so not out 75-90 gear oil into the transfer case (dealers do this) this is incorrect fluid.

@@Ralphyboy I am no expert, not saying ur wrong. In 4hi/4lo the transfer case binds. To get back to 2wd you have relieve this pressure, some people back up a foot, I back & turn motor off. You are so spot on!!! I actually have a 2020 manual and it's got to be the worst manual I've ever driven. No reverse lockout, you shift your reverse all the time when you're just trying to shift into first gear! Horribly annoying and slightly dangerous. Please let me know if you figure out the 4low situation, because I've experienced the exact same thing and the dealer basically did nothing and thought I was crazy! They drove it and shifted it on pavement and said there's nothing wrong. I explain to them that I'm sure it shifted fine when it was on pavement, but that was not the case in real four-wheeling situation. You forgot one major complaint, the gas mileage is terrible for a 2020 vehicle! Thank you so much for this video, keep up the great work! 👌🤗🙌🙌

I just bought a 08 FJ Cruiser, it’s a 6 speed manual with the manual shift transfer case, I always own older vehicles, this one is actually quite new to me 😂 the main reason I bought a 6 speed is because I don’t mind doing a clutch but I can’t stand high mileage automatics, seem to be problematic for me. One thing I can recommend is keep a code reader/ multi function gauge hooked up in your truck, my Toyota seems to pop up a random code every few weeks, I kind of think all the extra stuff just seems to be BS, Toyota’s aren’t what they use to be.
