At first he only appeared to Luke as a voice because he hadnt mastered the whole thing yet, once he was actually able to master it and became able to appear to him face to face, he decided to appear before Luke and give him more guidance.

+Star Wars Explained Another thing that intrigues me is Anakin. Anakin was dead but apparently he "a few moments" to learn this technique? So maybe the whole time thing is a little fuzzy or there's a brief purgatory of sorts before joining the Force. Also, this kind of explains why Kenobi forgave Anakin and helped him out. Regardless... He was going to be one with the Force so why not show him immortality and have him still assist with the rebellion.

well Qui Gon took decades turning from just a voice into an actual ghost. Obi Wan took 3 years, and Anakin took mere moments. Maybe it has to do with power. Anakin and obie wan are more powerful than Qui Gon so it's easier for them.

Qui-gone needed over 20 years until he could actually appear as a Force Spirit. Obi-wan needed about 3 years, and Anakin needed like an hour or so, but that doesn't take their training and force strength into account. I think the time needed is just them sort of "bleeding" into reality because they can only appear at a single point in a certain time, so they can't be in two places at once yet they try to stay within their timeline. Thus they need 'time', from a certain point of view!

It could be something (I don't know much about afterlifes in the SW Universe) along the lines of the afterlife is like paradise, or more likely, since the SW's universe pulls heavily from Eastern philosophy, some kind of zen-like "one-with-the-universe" state. When people pass on they become one with the force though only those who have trained can manifest themselves as force ghosts. I imagine the pain comes from pulling oneself out of the zen-like state and into the physical plane where one would again be able to experience emotional turmoil. As for the time scales, the afterlife is seemingly a place beyond space and time but theoretically it could still correspond/correlate to a timescale on the physical plane while not itself having one (it's not explicitly stated to be our universe, so doesn't have to work the same way). That could explain why it took 19 yrs, 3 yrs, and a few hours for respective Jedi. That was the perceived timescale in the physical universe.

Sadly any kind of Sith Ghost is no longer canon, since apparently persisting outside of death was antithetical to Sith dogma (in the same book, Palpatine is confused and frightened when he hears of the disappearance of Obi-Wan's body.) Which is really annoying since I could see tons of potential as some kind of force wraiths or tortured souls that can fully manifest or are tied down to a certain location and are plagued with the truth that they'll never be able to fully join the Force. I dunno, it seems like a bit of a waste. :/

There could be room for Sith ghosts of some form still. As Sith do not become "one" with the Force, but they can inhabit or haunt if you will locations or items in a vain attempt to gain more power.

Honestly, this explanation on how it is to be a Force ghost kinda makes me understand why Anakin would look young as a ghost instead of the old man from RotJ. He'd have to force himself to separate from the force, find his own individuality from it and, through it, achieve a semi-corporeal form. While he was certainly familiar with his old body, having seen his own reflection multiple times for sure, and he did become a good man again at the end, not only was that appearance tied to his dark side self, but it was also heavily scarred and damaged and "more machine than man". It kinda seems plausible that, by finding his own individuality as he separates himself from the Force for a moment, he'd end up creating an image of his young body, the last time he was (mostly) "whole" and the last time he'd look in a mirror and see a jedi looking back.

You know the way that being one with the Force is described, it almost sounds being a Newtype from the Gundam franchise (specifically the Universal Century timeline). To put it simply, Newtypes are the theoretical next stage of human evolution. The general Newtype theory is as follows: as humanity explores further into space, our latent abilities will blossom and our consciousness will expand as we adapt to that great void, and we will be able to understand one another on a psychic level without misconceptions or misunderstandings. However, as pointed out in Gundam Unicorn, the Newtypes we see and interact with are just on the cusp of that big evolutionary breakthrough; they're still too human to be considered true Newtypes. A true Newtype is one whose spirit exists outside of space-time. Of course, seeing as how both Star Wars and Gundam, philosophically speaking, were inspired by the works and writings of Timothy Leary, it should come as no coincidence that both works share common traits and attributes.

it is painful for Qui-Gon because he didn't complete his force ghost training, so it is much more difficult for him to manifest, and usually can't take a human form at all on as a voice (though he can on strongly force sensitive planets).

It kind of looks like that Anakin could be a ghost with little to no training because he was so powerful, as well as having been manifested both the light and the dark sides and to a degree, the fullness of the Force through both its aspects. The key to it however was his renouncement of the dark side after also renouncing the light, meaning he has found balance to himself and the Force. As for qui gonn not physically appearing for so long, it is possible that while he says time is meaningless to him, he could also mean that only the time of the physical realm is meaningless, as he no longer fully dwells in it, while in the Force, time for him is either much longer or shorter than normal, which would make his appearances not be in sync our time. For him it could have taken an eternity or no time at all to manifest physically or as a illusion, but it took obi wan decades to see master again.

Well if you skip over the whole limitless time of being one with the force (all of time and space perception is always wishy washy in stories). If that time is still linear for the force ghost (just being able to perceive time)... spending longer in the force without manifesting a ghost was probably rougher for him than say Yoda, ObiWan or Anakin since they still invested in current reality and only recently died.

Maybe the force ghosts can not interact with places in the past where they were not present. ie; why ghost Obi-wan didn't go warn young Obi-wan about Anakin. The Jedi Ghost thing became such a convoluted thing over the years. I've always had my own interpretation since the end of Return Of The Jedi: People who live a noble life get to keep their consiousness. Just like in Christianity. You live a loving life, you keep your soul and go to heaven. It functionned as perfect visual story telling tool. When the old Anakin Skywalker rejoined Yoda and Obiwan, it was perfectly clear that this just symbolised that his soul had been purified right before his death. He earned his place among the Jedi ghosts. I did not needed any explanation. The visuals were speaking for themselves. The visuals gave me enough room to add my own interpretation. It was fine that way. Now everithing is convoluted and overly complicated. You have to do intellectual gymnastics to make sense out of it, and even then you have things contradicting themselves.

Great video ! I always kind of had issues with the force ghosts because every Star Wars fan acts like force ghosts are always talking to everyone and that they'll be like constantly guiding and talking to Luke for instance in the new trilogy still, just like, chilling out with Luke ya know? I don't know why but this seemed to me always to be like abusing what I always felt and assumed is and should be a sparingly used thing, but then I always have to remind myself that they're probably more right than myself- and that even in a new hope from 1977, the idea that obi wan did something differently than just die and actually indeed did do some sort of ability that allowed him to live on, and hints at it to Vader in the battle. I always kind of feel like the force ghosts are simply the way a person who's passed on speaks to a character still living in other movies, until I remind myself that what's going on in Star Wars with the force ghosts was, and always has been, different than that. This really helped reinforce this for me even more so than the clone wars thing helped. Lol, regardless though, my mind tells me that I can't imagine them being in the new trilogy. But I had a dream that anakin was speaking to Luke in the new movie (yeah yeah, I technically "dreamed about Hayden Christensen. I deserve to get ripped on for it haha.) so now I want to think it the force ghosts will be a part of the movie, despite my mind saying "nah they aren't going to want that in their movie" since it's like rian johnsons time to shine and he won't want to have things like that, things that aren't solely his story-kinda thing
